Rare or popular: discuss your preference

Jul 25, 2007

    1. I don't think too much about whether a doll is popular or not
I just to buy the one I like

    2. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

I prefer dolls that you do not see every day, they do not have to be limited, but I do prefer them to be a bit more unusual. I had this choice to make when I got my first girl, I was tossing up between a Dollmore Ray and a Lishe. Lishe is beautiful but the uniqueness of the Ray won out in the end, and I think would have won even faster if DM sold white dolls more often. I know i made the right choice for my girl. I have since made similar choices over other dolls, and I adore my unusual sculpts. I mean I love my shiwoo and my El, but honestly there is something special about having one that is not out there all the time you know? Even my Hound, though hounds are not exactly uncommon, is unusual with his large ear mods. My dolls are unique, because they are mine, whether they are unique sculpts or not.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

Nope, I get the dolls I want because they suit my characters and it has nothing to do with how common they are, or how much gallery attention I would get (I hardly ever post in the galleries now anyway) I only ever feel the effects of popularity if I am choosing between two sculpts, when I feel the tug of the uncommon.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

Nope, I do click threads because they have certain sculpts IF I want to see that sculpt, but the subject of the post, sometimes the poster (if I know their photos are beautiful or they are a friend) sometimes the doll itself (If I am a fan of that doll, not that sculpt) will make me click, but honestly I hardly look at the galleries unless I want to see something specific now days.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

Yes, but only if I knew the company was reputable, I got ripped by "testing" a new company once, only to find their doll was a stolen sculpt.

    3. If I am to buy a doll, it's because I like it for the way it looks.

When I bought Adelheid (Souldoll Katie.A), I knew that Soulkids were not the most popular dolls, but not so much that they were unknown.

The only reason why I wouldn't buy a super unpopular doll is if there were barely any owner pictures that I could see. I'm totally someone who wants to see as many owner pictures as possibly before buying a doll, so if there aren't any, I tend to withhold.

I have a tendency to like dolls that aren't so popular. I guess I'd be the one who sees them everyday and it doesn't matter much that others wouldn't look at it as much as others.

However, if it's any consolation, even though there doesn't seem to be many people who own Katie.A's, my box opening thread from April has over 800 views which seems like a lot. I'm satisfied with that. :)

    4. No rare is too much work been there done that. Popular doesn't matter I buy the one's that talk to me that make me want more than just a picture of them. I want bjd's to be available when I want them because I don't have the heart to jump thru hoops nor do I feel like going to conventions to get in a lottery to maybe win one so I don't deal with companies that make their stuff difficult to obtain like an SD16. I like playing with my dolls so they will never spend time in a box due to rarity or be pretty shelf sitters. I am into the really big bjd's I like all types of faces from strong the pretty but I just don't like chubby child or baby dolls.

No I don't post in the gallery yet so I wouldn't buy one just to show there. I bought a (popular) Lishe simply because I could no longer resist her face and I still want a Moon because every time I see one he still makes me sigh. For me if I don't like how a doll photographs popular or not I won't buy them and just because they are popular does not mean they can't be unique

I click gallery threads when I want to see more of a sculpt that I may want to add to my collection
but I also like a wide variety of companies. I like looking at threads where the photographer knows how to show their dolls best qualities. If I don't like certain dolls, photography or subject matter I avoid posts that contain them

I did once she's a nice doll but I prefer taking my time to choose one who talks to me & will interact and add dimension to my current gang whether they are a sister, lover or troublemaker

    5. Er, I'm mixed. I'm most concerned, when looking for a doll, with finding one with the perfect 'looks' and such, and popularity/rarity doesn't even step in as a consideration. However, in terms of what I prefer and why, I would like to find a perfect doll that is 'popular' if only so that I can find ref pics to make sure I like the doll and so that I don't have to worry about the doll being 'limited' or difficult to obtain XD . So, popularity is good for practical reasons. In terms of just charm and personal 'this makes me feel fuzzy to have a doll like this', I would prefer a rare one. It'd just seem nice to have a doll that not too many other people have, so that I don't stumble across tons of look-alikes. But I don't mind terribly much if it's not, so I guess practicality rules over novelty somewhat for me.

    6. Apparently I like rare, but it wasn't something I was thinking about when I got the dolls, I just wanted these particular sculpts because I liked them. Then I found out that almost nobody has em.

    7. I like to see popular dolls doing something different or unsual. I get tired of seeing the same concept used over and over again in such an imaginative hobby.

    8. I wouldnt say I like either or. Though rarity would spur me into action to buy a doll faster than an ordinary doll, just for the fear of not getting the doll I want because of its limited number.

Right now I just browse all the doll websites and when I see something I like, rare or not I add it to my list. One of my favorites by far was a rare limited to only 10 world wide. Its long gone and I doubt I will ever get it. But other than that I dont look at whats rare or over used. I have a picture in my head of what I want and whatever is closest is usually what gets added to my list. But every now and then I also see something amazing that catches my eye, and it gets on the list as well.

When going to actually buy the doll I might take rarity into account if I am chosing between two different dolls. For instance I have something in mind and two dolls fit the bill. I would be more willing to go for the rare, for a few reasons. One I wont see a hundred other dolls like mine everywhere. The idea of novelty is always appealing. There is also resale value. A doll with fewer numbers either through limitation or lack of popularity is more likely to hold resale value because of supply and demand. If there are 10 MSD dolls for sale and only 1 SD the SD will hold its value better because there is a lower supply so people will pay more for the rarity. Where as the MSD just the fact that there are 10 out there creates a competition of making prices lower and people then play the market. A popular doll probably will hold value for a while until its market becomes saturated, then the price will drop.

Most of the dolls I like dont seem to be rare, and admittedly most of them dont seem to be popular either (or perhaps they are just new to the scene?). I am having a hard time finding pictures of them in the Opedia or requests, as I like to see what they look like outside glamor shots.

    9. Popularity or rarity isn't a factor at all when I choose my dolls. Some of the ones on my list are a dime a dozen, others I haven't seen at all, I choose based entirely on how much their sculpt appeals to me. If I gasp, pause and gaze longling at them- that's the decider....

    10. It makes absolutely no difference to me if they are rare or popular. It's the beauty of the individual doll that impresses me. It's not just one type that I like either. Like they say about art, I don't know a lot about dolls but I do know what I like.

    11. I like the dolls wich are rare.
Rare by the mold in itself or by what the owner did with her/his doll.

I explain (no in fact : I try :sweat): I think popular molds can become very rare models. By modifying the mold and by creating a really special character (with the make-up, the clothing style, the wig, etc), with a well marked and unique personality. A popular mold can thus make a very rare doll.
I particularly appreciate the boldness of some owners who create, sometimes from very populare molds, absolutely amazing, rare and unique dolls.

I mean : a popular mold to make an unique character is better than a rare mold to make a character lambda.

    12. I like my dolls to be original. The mold has to be something unusual that I can make look unique with my own skills, not necessarily something limited or rare. However, I have found myself steering away from very common molds (which believe it or not, can include the limited ones). Even if I like them, the fact that there are so any just makes it that much harder for me to make mine unique.

    13. I totally agree with you, and I'm selling a rare doll for that very reason! I found I couldn't make her interesting or unique at all. I prefer my non-limted dolls which I make unique ^^

    14. I buy the dolls because I love them.
Well, I only have one and come to think of it Iv'e only met two people on theese forums who also have her, but I didn't chose her because of that.
Personally I think you should go for the doll you like, not based on the popularity.
      :]

    15. Same here. It doesn't matter to me if a doll is rare or common - it is the mold itself that draws me in.

    16. i buy only doll i like.Ys?i have amber and Heliot and Dia-quite popular molds, but i'm planning to buy Olivine(soom)and Isabel(Buddy-Doll)-not very popular dolls...
We..i dont care what people thinck-the main thing is that i like my dolls and thats all

    17. so i just got done with my little tidbit on the "are you jealous when some one buys your doll mold" thread. this is just kind of re-wording what i said there!

i decided on my girls because they were beautiful and different than the average sculpt to me. but it irritates me that the 2 dolls i DO have are super popular now.

i ordered my dolls based on how their pics on their home sites made me feel. I thought they were both beautiful and had character even before they got to me. i feel like alot of dolls sculpts out there... well... just look the same! i swear they ALL have the same bland expression! i have been surfing doll sites for more than 2 years trying to decide on the BEST doll and i really feel like the 2 dolls i have are my favorite sculpts out there. so it bothers me now because i see more and more people buying the same 2 sculpts as what i have.

i guess my big issue is i HATE being "on the bandwagon". i hate being the same as everyone else! i dont like people thinking of me as a follower. and i kind of feel like people think that when they see i have DoD E-an and LittleFee Ante!! but at the same time, i LOVE seeing spam of E-an's and Antes.
lol maybe its just cuz ive never seen any other dolls IRL besides my 2.

    18. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Rarity. If there is an attractive doll and it's obscure then I'm totally in love.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
I wouldn't buy a doll for gallery views, and I wouldn't let myself get bullied into not buying a doll I really wanted.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
No, I'm more likely to click gallery threads that have a Volks doll, though, because I plan to own many and want to see what everyone does with theirs.

    19. HI babytarragon!

      Rare is appealing to me.

I don't consider gallery views when I buy a doll. I would like people to look at my photos like everyone else but... it would not influence me in the end. I love my dolls but I think the molds don't inspire many clicks :). I guess it is a challenge for me to see if I get people to look at my less popular doll :)

I click on galleries pretty randomly. I am most likely to click on items with many clicks. I like to look at galleries of people who have dolls I want or dolls I have :)

Yes I would buy a doll not seen on the forum.

    20. Hi.

I buy the dolls I like, don't care if others like them.

I owned a Custom House Mary, and I think I was one of the first to get her, I had her
for years and then sold her to get onother one, but I regret it now, I miss my Mary.

Now I have a tiny on 25 cm, its a Angel Fantasy Ari - and I can't find many pics here
of that mold, but I think she is cute.
