Rare or popular: discuss your preference

Jul 25, 2007

    1. I'm not picky. I like a doll because I like it. If it looks really pretty I am more likely to want it. I don't care as much about rarity and such.

    2. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Neither! Who CARES? Unless you intend to go into the business of buying dolls to resell, it is moot. I am interested in quality & in a sculpt that fits the story/characters I'm going for. Period. Nice if I don't have to mortgage the house to get the dolls, as well, Or make round-trip visits to Japan to wait in line in hopes...get me started on THAT racket....
      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
Never. Anyone who knows me would laugh at the thought.
      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favorite company.
I'm likely to click on threads that feature dolls I want but don't have yet - to check if my choices are reasonable. I tend to click on any threads out of curiosity, tho.
      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Yes, but I would still look for it all over the net - in order to get an idea of what it really looks like, the quality, etc. I also am interested in why a doll is not popular, because sometimes there's a relevant (to me) reason (ie, something that is wrong w/how the doll works, thin resin, etc etc)

    3. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Neither? I don't purchase dolls because everyone has one or no one has one. I don't really care if it's rare or popular, because that's not why I'm in the hobby, really. I want a doll because I want it, not because everyone else does.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
No and no. Again, that's silly.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favorite company.
Not unless I was specifically searching for photos from that particular company because I'm wanting one myself. Otherwise, I tend to click at random in the gallery.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
I imagine I would if I liked it enough. If I need/want owner photos, I'm sure it was be just as easy to locate some off-forum if it doesn't exist on the forum itself.

    4. I buy a doll because it has a pretty face sculpt and high quality for the money. I am of the belief that ALL BJDs are rare, especially when compared to the rest of the doll market, so the question of popularity vs. rarity seems moot to me. I love looking at all the different types and brands of BJDs but I would give the edge to Bambicronys! :aheartbea

    5. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Neither. Admittedly, I find it nice when there are a lot of owner photos on DoA and otherwise available on the internet, but a doll's popularity does not directly influence my decision to buy. Case in point: many, many people on DoA have Crobidoll's Yeon-ho, but you could probably count the number of Asleep Eidolon Coral owners here on one hand.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
No. This is probably because I don't really look through gallery threads that way. Once in a while if I'm interested in seeing a particular doll I'll do a search, but I like seeing everyone's photos of all kinds of dolls.

I would never let a doll's popularity influence my decision to purchase it. I don't care if people think, "Oh, great, another Yeon-ho." I love the sculpt, and he's perfect for my character, so I chose to buy him. I think that's the great thing about these dolls. There could be a 100 of a single sculpt on this forum, but they would all probably look very different based on how the owner chose to customize them.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
I have before, like I said, when I'm interested in seeing more photos of a particular sculpt. I am also guilty of avoiding threads with dolls I find unappealing. However, I just like looking at pictures of these things... I don't care if it's a company I'm familiar with, or one I've never heard of! Sometimes the ones I've never heard of have the best photos, and I find myself falling in love with an unfamiliar company's work. ^^

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
I think I would. I would be unsure about buying a doll I hadn't seen owner photos of, but if I wanted it enough, I'd probably take the plunge. Only after a lot of consideration, though.

    6. I have picked one or two sculpts just because of the challenge. They are unpopular as far as I can tell. And I'm planning to put a couple of male heads on female bodies because the facial structure will be less familiar for female, and I hope to be able to make them very interesting, at least to me.

I did fall for the more popular dolls, yes, Luts. I'm such a newbie it took a while for me to understand what a CP doll was, but I liked them too. Heh. I want to have some of the dolls that sold large numbers because I hope to make properly fitting clothes for them. That is yet to be discovered, if I can do this. I am still in the process of rearranging my house and my life so I can focus on this.

I do like the dolls that have been taken on by the more reputable artists with big followings. I like the simple solidness of the Volks dolls I have, and some of them seem to be the holy grail doll for people. But I don't even know which ones are the top dogs.

Mostly, I go for what I like. Simple as that, OR complicated as that.
I have from the least expensive to some moderately expensive ones.
I don't think I would ever want one of the super expensive ones, which I guess get that way partly because they are worshipped/loved by many people? That would not sway me to shell out the big bucks, but never say never...

    7. What matters to me is the look. I like uniqueness, but I do not have to have a special limited for this. It is not how rare a doll is to me, its what his or her beauty triggers in me. I love the CP dolls, they are some of the most popular in sales. I do get frustraited though with trying to save up for a special limited for it to be only sold out. It matters not if they are expensive or on the cheaper side, its more important that the dolls skulpt calls to me and won't leave me alone with the desire.... I want that one.

    8. regardless of popularity i will only purchase dolls i really love /_\ due to limited amount of money, and more importantly, it is difficult to force myself into buying things i don't like XD yes is always yes and no is always no

    9. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
It matters not. What matters is how much the sculpt and coloring appeals to me. Doll popularity is something I could not care less about. I am after a quality of the resin and sharpness of the sculpt. Once those things are in order, the next thing would be budget and fit in with my other DJDs. That would eb my only criteria.

Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

Gallary views are not the reason i buy dool. They are to suit my own tastes not oanyone elses.

Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
What on earth is a CP doll?

Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

Of course, the forums don't rule my life, neither do they dictate what I spend MY money on. I think I now know enough about BJDs to determine what I like and be able to buy it without anyone's approval or input. I give myself permission to enjoy the things I like.

    10. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
in my opinion the most important thing it's that you like the doll!
Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
I haven't got any galleries of my doll, so it doesn't matter.
Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
what is a cp doll? anyway I have a favourite company and I often look at their photos, but I love all the dolls!
Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
      sure! where is the problem?

    11. I just liked the sculpt of my doll when I saw it, and had to have him. While preparing for his arrival, though, researching faceups and clothes etc, I realized that he wasn't all that popular. I must admit that this made me like him more. Not rare, but a bit... special ;)

    12. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
theres a problem in here , unknown company or small company that not so many people know can be said as 'rare' doll since , but i always chose the doll i'm in love with doesn't matter its rare or not

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
well i don't really care actually if i did share picture (i don't have a doll yet , still waiting him to come home) i only share it for joy

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
less likely , i do have a favorite doll company which is crobidoll

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
if i'm in love with the doll i guess i'll buy the doll

    13. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
      I guess it's a little more appealing if it's rare/less popular.
Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
First question: no, I don't buy dolls for gallery views, I buy them cause I love the sculpts. Second question: well, yes and no. I am a little reserved when it comes to 'popular' dolls, but not because I'm afraid to be seen as a follower but because there'll be more chances my doll will look like anothers'. I also rather like being unique *shot*
Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
No, not really. I'm not a big fan of CP to be truthfull, but I'd go to browse a gallery if I know I'll find the doll sculpts I like (or if they feature more Crobi dolls, yes I like looking at them haha)
Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Yea, why not? I mean, I bought one before even getting in DoA, so...Though now I do look for ownerpics, just to see more picture of the sculpt I'm interested in, but even if I don't find, that won't change my plans on getting a doll I like.

    14. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
-I don't have a preference, really. Like so many others have said, I buy a doll because it appeals to me, not because it appeals to a wider audience or is coveted because it's rare xD

Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
-I feel like I am sort of exempt from this question, considering how new I am to the site and, furthermore, considering that I have yet to post anything in the gallery. So the answer to that is obviously no.

Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
I'm in the same boat as Mariano G, I don't know what CP doll is...

Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

      If I liked it enough, yes. I don't discriminate (;

    15. I will get the doll I want regardless of popularity. That said, I suppose there are certain sculpts even from companies I do really like that I've been turned off from wanting simply because of the sheer amount of them here and I grew tired of seeing them.

I will never buy a doll purely on the basis of getting gallery views. I get the doll because I like it, not to appear that I'm jumping onto some bandwagon, nor to please others.

Admittedly, I am less likely to look at a gallery featuring CP (Fairyland dolls and Luts' delf line) dolls. I've seen so many they all start to look the same to me. Admittedly again, I AM more likely to look at galleries featuring Sooms (namely in hopes of finding pretty fantasy parts). I also look at sculpt names I don't recognize and in general anything that looks/sounds interesting to me.

I don't know if I would or would not buy a doll I had not seen on this forum before. I think it would depend on the situation I find it, what info is available about it, and how much I like it.

    16. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Well my reason in finding a doll is that its me that loves it regardless of rare or popular. I love it that's what matters.

Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
No absolutely not I buy dolls because I love them not because its gonna get me more views or whatever in fact as much as I like seeing people view my pictures and comment most of the time people don't and why did I take the pictures in first place to please me.

Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
To be honest I love CP but they aren't the only company and usually I click on a thread regardless of the company...espcially if I have never seen a doll from that compnany before. Yah I like CP who doesn't, I love stuff from Luts too, and DZ, and a mirid of other companies.

Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

Yes I would buy a doll that I had not seen on the forums but I often try to run it by my friends first.Usually I just do it unless I know for sure a company is not reliable.

    17. My preference has nothing to do with the popularity or availability of a sculpt, and everything to do with how well the sculpt fits my character. I have hunted for hard-to-find dolls for years after they were discontinued, because they suited one of my characters, and I have purchased dolls that were extremely common, again, because they suited one of my characters.

The common dolls are admittedly nicer, simply because they're easier to acquire. Having to search for 5+ years before I find a doll on the market (or having to pay two-three times the original price of the doll, because it's so rare) is a pain in the ass. Still, I shrug and accept it as part of the hobby.

    18. I have two dolls: one of them is luts kid delf. This firm is more popular, than hzbjd, especially RORO. But I have it! And I don't think, that one of them is better, just because of popularity of firm-producer. I love them, just them, not a firm.
About gallery...I view photos of the same mold too, and I don't think, that popularity of mold can make doll worse. We love doll, which we can keep in our hands, not a promo. This is your doll, what's the difference, how much there are similar to it? You buy it for you, not for other users ;)

    19. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Neither. Does't matter really. But I do tend to shy away from dolls that everyone and their grandma owns, like some of the fairyland sculpts. Everywhere I look there's a shi/chiwoo/chloe etc. I do like dolls that are lesser known, not 'rare'.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
No and yes... And that makes me sad. I do want gallery views, but no one knows about Elva sculpts from 5StarDoll so no one clicks on my stuff. I wouldn't buy a doll that would boost my ratings unless I really loved it. And also, I probably would shy away from buying a doll that is 'too popular' just because it's everywhere and I want to get stuff that people don't see particularly everyday. But the whole "follower" thing is redonk.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
They aren't my favorite company??? But I do pick and choose when reading gallery threads, so I don't waste my time looking at dolls I've seen a billion times, like Fairyland.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Absolutely, already have. Someone's gotta pioneer the new sculpts of each company. I just can't wait to get him. It's nerve-wracking though, since I have no idea what Souldoll's new sculpt looks like in real life, or how tan "sandy brown" is, or what the new body looks like!!!

    20. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Honestly, I like rarer dolls. I admit that I do get a bit excited about having that extra special something no one has seen before. I like that feeling of owning pretty, special things. Is that to say that I would abandon a doll the second it got popular and/or never buy one because it is? Heck no. I love some of the popular dolls and they're on my list.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
No and okay... honestly... maybe. I might be influenced by an astounding amount of doll ownership to pick another one on my list to come first. Am I usually? No. There are much more important things to me like price, quality, sculpt etc.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a [certain company] doll?
Yes, all the time. I like what I like. Ringdoll, Luts and Iplehouse get my attention consistently. Is it always a company love thing? Only sort of. I know those companies best, so I enjoy seeing what people have done with them because I know what the company default is. Do I still click through other things? Of course.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Already did. When I paid for my girl, there was not one Wagashi on the forums. One girl did receive her doll before me, but I had never seen anything but the company pictures when I first found her. I have to admit, that made me want her more than if she had been common. I liked the mystery of no knowing how it'll all turn out.
