1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Re-Releasing "Retired" Sculpts?

Feb 26, 2008

    1. On one hand I think it's ridiculous, a special edition of a game never gets re-released, why should a doll?

On the other hand, it's nice for the people who missed out the first time or are new to the hobby.

    2. What are your feelings on popular companies re-releasing retired sculpts?
If a company has not officially retired their doll, it's fine. Different doll sculpts go in and out of style. Perhaps a certain mold wasn't selling and so they pulled it for the time being. Sometimes it takes a few years for some demand to build up.

      1) Do you feel that their motives for re-releasing a sculpt are "moral"? Is there a difference if it is done as a favour to fans, or is it largely motivated by potential profit?
Companies need to make money in order to exist. End of story. This isn't a question about morals. If re-releasing a certain doll will bring in extra money, there is nothing wrong with that.

      2) From the perspective of an owner of the original, should one feel like your doll is "undervalued" by the release of new versions of old classics? Alternatively, as a new doll owner, should one feel that the original is now "outdated"?
I think if I were an owner of an original, I would feel that my doll is somewhat outdated were a new version to be made. I have never been in this position so I really can't say much in regards to it. However, I am the owner of a newer version of Soulkid Katie so I can give some of my input there. The older version only seems outdated because the body is different. To me, the mold is just another doll.

      3) From the perspective of someone who has long coveted these "retired" dolls and missed the chance to buy the new ones, should one feel cheated by the doll companies for giving everyone another chance and affecting the rarity?
Not at all. As far as any of us know, these dolls are "unlimited" and they are marketed as such so it's really not up to the buyer to feel cheated because the seller decided to make them more "unlimited" than they actually are.

And a last, very small question:
Does this affect how you view the integrity of a doll company? Does it change your opinion in either a positive or negative way, or increase/decrease your chances of buying from the company in the future?
If a doll has never been marketed as a limited, no, it does not.

    3. I don't know. To me a re-release is like getting another printing of a classic book. It will still not be that "first edition" that is more valuable. For instance, the CP Delf Juri 05 as compared to the Fairyland Juri 12.
