1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Resin Match Masterpost?

Sep 1, 2015

    1. What if we could make a large post here on DoA listing matches to different hybrids?

      For example:

Withdoll Cream White matches Doll Chateau WS perfectly

      or

Doll Chateau WS matches: Dollzone WS, WithDoll CW, and so on?

I'm sorry if this post isn't allowed! Just curious to see if it would be a good idea. Nothing's worse than planning a hybrid that ends out not working*_*

    2. This really isn't practical, unfortunately, because resin formulations can (and do) change, often without any warning. I personally have a doll with all parts from the same company, who has a mismatch between his head and body because of a change in the recipe resulting in a slightly more pink head. (It's not enough that it's a problem; it's actually not even noticeable already, with just his faceup done, and blushing will de-emphasize it even more.) Plus, different people have different tolerances for matching--yes, that boy has slightly different resin tones. His brother (a hybrid) does, too. I consider both matched--it's barely noticeable, and disappears when they're blushed. But someone else might find the fact that their colors aren't 100% is unacceptable, so which of us determines whether that's actually a match or not?

Thus, it's impractical to try to do a text-only masterlist, as it would have to be heavily maintained every time something changed even a little, and would not allow for people to consider whether the differences are within their own tolerance or not. Reviewing multiple photos taken under multiple different lighting conditions with multiple different cameras might take more effort, but it's honestly the best option; older pictures will let someone determine the matching quality of a secondhand part, and photos in general let people come to their own judgement over whether or not the difference/similarity is acceptable to them.

    3. There is a rather old thread here that links to a spreadsheet of some resin matches. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php/243344

If you check out the spreadsheet, you will see that it's rather large, and pretty unwieldy. And it doesn't include any companies that were started after the original poster stopped updating their list. And vicemage pointed out a lot of the big reasons why it doesn't work very well.

It's also going to be tough to have something like this with current info at all times. That's usually how it goes with master-list types of posts, especially on DoA. Since a person can only edit their own posts, if they stop logging on, or stop editing their post to keep up with information, then no one else can update it and before long a lot of the information is obsolete. You can see this in the Buying and Shipping Questions section, where there are two threads about dolls under $300. Even the newer thread has missing links already, and some of the prices may have changed - and that thread was updated in May of this year.

As far as making hybrids goes, since an owner may have certain tastes, it's always best to do research before planning one out. And even if there isn't an up-to-date thread on what resin matches what, there are at least the specific resin-matching threads out there. :)

    4. As the others have already mentioned, there is no such thing as an absolute, always-correct match-up list. You also have to take into consideration parts sizes, will they be compatible even if the resin matches. Resin tones also vary over the course of the production year; factories are often not sealed away from climate variations that affect the final results. Then too, as vicemage mentioned, resin ages. And resin is not a single substance but a blend, and formulations vary among companies, and different formulations age at different rates and in different ways. Then there are the lightfastness or lack of for the dyes being used. What matches if both parts are straight from the company may not match a year or two down the line.

Then there are the personal preferences of people looking to make a hybrid. One person's attitude towards limb jointing types, torso joints, head sculpt styles, etc., can vary widely. Most people want to look up what they personally are interested in and find their information as quickly as possible; they don't want to wade through tons of things they have no interest in. That is why there are numerous hybridizing threads in areas like Photo Reference, as well as hybrid threads in the Database section, and lots of hybridizing information in the various brand discussion threads.
