Resinsoul and Bobobie Mini Discussion Thread - Part 33

Aug 5, 2021

    1. Is she too loose or too tight? Either way, restringing can do wonders on a doll. The one resinsoul I own was, quickly frankly, strung like shit when he arrived, way too loose and with a huge knot in the head. Shortening the elastic and making the knot sit in the chest really helped.
With this said, it happens to be disappointed. But if you think it's a beautiful doll, then I think those issues are workable (I've received a doll once that was badly strung AND ugly, and it's hard to move past that lol). Check how to restring a doll if you've never done it. It takes a little time and patience, a little strength as well (get help if you're worried about that) but if you check tutorials, it's not so difficult.
If hope you can enjoy your doll in spite of that difficult beginning!

    2. Thank you both for your words of wisdom. I'm feeling a bit better about her I've been kind of stretching her legs, I think the problem is that it is tight, so hopefully she will loosen up. I peeked inside her joints so I'm less intimidated by the prospect now if I have to restring (i just still do not want to do it lol!). At least I was able to fix her head issue...Turns out, the elastic was twisted-it seems if her head had been accidentally turned backwards. One of her legs cords was also twisted. It took some practice but I did eventually get her to stand. It was definitely not an easy feat haha. I will need to be patient with her :)

    3. @kittyglitter Yeah, Resinsoul dolls are not best known for their marvels of engineering... But on the other hand, many of their dolls are very pretty and great blank slates for mod work and they are very affordable. As long as you like the look of the doll, it's well worth putting in the time to make it work for you.
I second the suggestion on restringing with thicker elastic, that is an often used work around for Resinsouls snappy joints. It doesn't solve the actual engineering issues, but it does relieve some of the symptoms.
Another easy fix is to do some hot glue sueding in her joints. That will help the joints hold their postition.
(Beyond that, there isn't much to be done unless you want to go into permanent mobility mods.)

Restringing isn't that big of a deal once you've done it a few times and you will probably have to learn sooner or later anyway, as even the best elastic will go bad with age. You might as well get the first few scary times out of the way. ;)
Best of luck with getting your girl to work for you! Xun is such a pretty doll, there is some great potential in there once you get past the posing issues.

    4. @kittyglitter I actually own a Xun. Got her a year and a half ago. She isn’t too complicated to restring. The biggest thing with her was keeping all the limbs sorted out correctly and remembering which way was up on the joints. There’s not a lot of small pieces to fiddle with. Just the double joints. I had no intention of it until the elastic somehow fell off an s hook and her arm started coming apart. She still doesn’t pose well because the default elastic is so small and possibly too tight. I also had no idea what I was doing at the time.
I just ordered some thicker elastic and wire to restring a couple of my dolls, including her and another Resinsoul girl (Dawn). If you want, I can take photos to record the process. I’m not really a restringing person and will put up with a lot to avoid it, but I can at least get as much information for you as possible for if you have to attempt it. Look into sueding and wiring in the meantime. They won’t actually fix bad engineering but they will hide the symptoms.

    5. thicker elastic will do wonders!
RS string with elastic too narrow, a lot of companies seem to honestly. Maybe because it's easier? but thicker elastic allows for better friction.

as for the head cocking to one side and the knees kicking, that's a common issue with resinsouls. For the head often just changing the tension in the strings will help but the knees often will need sueding to add more friction to stop them doing that. You can quite easily "suede" a joint using a dab of hot glue in there.

but my first step would be thicker elastic. It's done wonders for the few i've bothered to restring. A couple of them still aren't too happy to stand but those ones tend to be the ones with the really strange cup joints rather than the peanuts. I hate those damn cup joints argh.

    6. I am so grateful for the support, yall. I am going to try to hot glue suede her today, then I will look into restringing/wiring if needed.

    7. Just my personal experience, but hot glue sueding made it harder to pose my dolls because it alters the shape of the inner joint. Maybe someone out there has the magic touch to get it on very, very thin and smooth, but I absolutely do not have that talent and every doll I've received second hand with hot glue sueding had lumpy bumpy glue in their joints that took their posing ability down a few notches.
Besides, you'll need to unstring to hot glue suede anyway ;)

    8. I appreciate the heads up. I actually went and did it right after I posted my last post. I was amazed at how quick and easy it was. I used a popsicle stick to place it because I was afraid to actually drip straight in there. I just did the hips and knees (since her arms were fine) and she is a million times better! She can actually hold them straight now, and can purposefully bend the double joints in her knees independently without them both snapping automatically any time her leg gets touched. I did have too much on the first knee and it wouldn't go back in the socket, but I was able to peel it out and put in a thinner layer, just at the top of the knee not around the sides, and for now at least, it seems to be doing the trick! Oh and I didn't unstring her, just pulled the legs out a little. Call me lazy if you want but it worked for now :kitty1 Here she is now, in all her "i can hold a pose for longer than 5 seconds now!" glory. excuse the mess, we're remodeling.

    9. All that matters is that you're happy with your doll. Congrats on your first mod!

    10. Ugh. The improvement from the sueding lasted all of 1 day. I restrung her (with the string she had) and it didn't help at all. I also wired her, because I had some wire on hand, no help there, but maybe the wire is too thin (pipe cleaners--i figured it was better than nothing at all). I am currently waiting on some thicker elastic to come in the mail, since apparently they don't carry the size we need at craft stores near me. I'm still enjoying her, she's got hair now, and some clothes, and eyes are in the mail..I've been adding blush, freckles, sparkles...But oh do I sure hope I can get her to stop kicking me and stand. If not, I suppose I'll get a doll stand? I dunno. I'd consider a new body because I do love her face, but I doubt anyone would want to buy her old body--so I would have spent way too much for a resinsoul head haha. Maybe she will get really good at seated poses, and that will be enough? I dunno

    11. My kickiest of girls still stands, you just have to be a bit... persistant. I have one boy with a slippy hip though, I rammed some eye putty in there which has helped hahahaha.

    12. Some Xun spam so I can get updates to this thread:3nodding: I would like to add that mine is strung with 4mm elastic throughout. Still the most fiddly of my dolls but once she's posed it's usually fine. Wouldn't trust her to stand on her own for more that a minute or two though.

    13. Anyone got a lan? I’m so confused with her sizing. I don’t have any YoSD dolls so I can’t try anything on her on that size but to anyone who has her, what’s the best clothing/wig size?

    14. Doesn't Ian use the same body as Mei? Just a way smaller head. Which means most minifee stuff for "small bust" should fit. I'll admit, I tend to custom order a lot of my doll clothes anyway heh. I have specific outfits in mind for most of them.

But my few resinsoul girls tend to wear slim mini clothing. Sometimes it is a little big in places and needs to be cinched in though.

    15. She's adorable! I didn't realize she had a cute rounded nose? :love

    16. Yaaasss! It's the round nose that sold me. Such a cute little button.

    17. The trick is to add a little blushing to the tip of the nose. It really brings out the lovely shape.

    18. two new resinsoul msds!

Another dragon girl (AMAZING HORNS) and what looks like the same head on a human body.

I'm tempted to email them and ask for blank sculpt pictures.

    19. Ooooo she's so pretty! Sad that the human version is on the Xun body, though; I disliked that body so much that I ended up selling my Xun :sweat

    20. I mean, this being ResinSoul probably means you can ask them for modifications if you can think of any that can help. I was personally planning to ask for a smaller bust and mobility joints. Will add notches myself as necessary. Or get another body. I think the pale normal Resinsoul has now potentially matches Asleep Eidolon's Peach Skin nicely (look similar, I need to compare them in better lightning though)
