Rough Play

Jun 19, 2010

    1. Yeah put me in the camp of those who like to have the things they love out where I can see them :3 I wouldn't say I'm totally rough or in any way careless with the dolls, but I don't treat them with kid gloves.

When travelling (which I do a lot, joys of home and university being in different countries) they get packed securely in their doll carriers, but I'll happily pop them into a back pack or something when I'm just going out for a photoshoot or something. I touch their face-ups (though never with grubby hands, and I'd never do this to someone else's doll) when needed, and happily cuddle and fuss with them. Hey I even spray painted one of them at one point XD

Heck, in a move that I'm sure will make some of you cringe, I've happily given the dolls to my friends little kids to play with (and ended up watching them un-string him... whelp). Honestly I think they ended up being more caefull with him then most of my 'mature, grown up' friends are -__-

    2. Despite them costing an arm and a leg, I play with my dolls. I love them, and because I love them, I handle them all the time. But that's just how *I* love something.

I'd hate to see them get damaged, and I take my own procautions to keep them looking nice, but in my world, I can't love something to the full capacity if I'm attempting to keep it absolutely pristine. They will earn little badges of my love, whether it be a little yellowing or a few minor scratches, and I'm ok with that. I wont love them any less.

They are exposed to indirect light, I carry them all over the place, touch their faces when I need to, but I do what I can to avoid prolonged direct sun, dropping or bumping. It's worked out so far...To this day, I have not broken a part of my doll, severely ruined a face-up or damaged any of my 'dolly things'. I have, however smothered them with lots of attention and love. :D

    3. Having owned various BJDs for the past 3 years (I have lost count of how many I've bought and sold) I've certainly learned what is needed (like avoiding the faceup) and what is silly (gloves? seriously....lol)
If I had to handle them with gloves and keep them in their box all the time, I don't think I'd be in the hobby...

    4. I don't take SUPER precautions with my dolls. In fact I've had someone say that they were "the filthiest dolls they've ever seen" which hurt my feelings, because I LOVE my dolls. And they weren't that dirty. She was my first doll, and had a terrible body blushing experience with some member on here (that's banned now) But anyway, you don't want to hear my rant.

I just make sure that my hands are clean, I don't wash every time I touch them, cause I think that's excessive. So I guess I treat them like stuffed animals, but I don't sleep with them. I'm afraid I'll break there fingers or noses or whatever. But I do cuddle and kiss! XD

    5. I'm super protective over my dolls faces and heads. I had the company do both faceups and I absolutely LOVE how they were done so I would really hate to chip something and not be able to get that exact look again. I'm also quite a perfectionist so I would hate to have them damaged for any bit of time.

    6. I absolutely LOVE this! Its so true too. I mean yes, you do have to be careful with your dolls, and personally I don't like other hold mine cuz if by chance something happened, I'd hate to have to turn to them and be like..."You owe me like...$500 dollars" But seriosuly some people treat them like a bomb ready to explode. I play with my dolls a lot and touch the faceups to, and nothing has ever chipped or anything. one time I even had my girl in my lap standing up and she fell, her left snapped the wrong way and her boot made a huge black scuff on her face. I pooped my pants at first, but the scuff came off so easily. My dolls have fallen over too and they are fine. Like you said they are really sturdy! I've heard (may have been a rumor) that someone dropped a doll from DOD onto cement and it was completely fine!

    7. I got rough with my dollfie, and I cracked her leg at the seam. It's still cracked - because I don't know how to repair it. And eventually (with no fault of my own) the other leg did the same thing. AND, when I got my second dollfie, her leg was already cracked at the same part!

    8. I'm the same way -- I like to be able to see my guys as it's part of how I enjoy them. Also, by having them around me I feel like I'm getting to spend time with them, even if I'm too busy to embark on any major dolly projects. However, I have very little natural light in my apartment, so I don't have to worry much about yellowing.

    9. Most of my dolls have pretty sheltered lives. Most of them spend their time in my dark bedroom, sitting on my dresser in the same outfit for months in a time... Oh, sure, sometimes I might pack them up for a meetup, but, usually, they are quite delicately treated...

      Most.

Laura, my Volks MSD Mary, is my traveling doll. She gets folded, squished, tossed, stored in a purse or plastic grocery bag, banged around... I take her on month-long camping trips with my family (which includes two tweens and a toddler). I make her pose on stupidly dangerous places, and, yes, she has fallen before. Laura's tumbled off of ledges, swooned off of balconies, and, once, dropped into a boiling mud pot in Yellowstone. I can't even tell ya how many times she has gond swimming. XDDD Despite it all, she is fine! Sure, the faceup needs to be redone from time to time, but besides that, she is in the same condtion as my desk dolls. In fact, I don't even think she has yellowed any more than they have despite in INSANE amount of sun she has been exposed to.

These dolls aren't exactly stuffed animals, but they aren't made of glass either... =D

    10. I'm..moderate with them. XD I'm certainly careful enough, keep clean, out of the sun, etc. But they're not sheltered either. I couldn't stand just keeping them in their boxes all the time. .w.

    11. I feel like a bad doll owner now xD My Gloria is ALWAYS in her box >.> I'm going to have to fix that lol

    12. I'm sure I remember that from sometime back, but would never be able to find it. What I do know is that my first doll part (which arrived a couple of weeks before my first full doll) ... he was a mini head, a DZ Shuang actually ... leaped energetically from my hands while I was getting ready to spray him and hit the concrete patio. And BOUNCED. :) Not a mark on him anywhere.

I suspect some of the thinner-resin heads I've purchased since then might not fare so well, and I definitely am not going to experiment. :) It was a rather startling way to discover that they're not as frail as they seem, though!

    13. I'm pretty rough with my dolls. I painted and modded them, so there's nothing I can't fix. I don't mind letting complete strangers handle and inspect them. They also can get pretty sticky when I'm working on patterns (sweaty hands and taped-on test patterns) but I really enjoy unstringing and giving them a thorough cleaning every now and then.

    14. My girl is real tight right now, so I basically have to man-handle her in order to get her to pose and stay posed.:XD: And I love it when other people want to handle her that I offer to let them do it!:) But... I do keep her in a display case when I'm not playing with her.:XD:

    15. I never put my boy in a carrier, he comes with me in my arms. I put him inside a carrier once just to see if it would be easier to tote him around and the look on his face when I strapped him in was like: ...THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!? So...I took him out and gave my friend her carrier back. LOL

He has also been in shopping carts, driven a car (LOL well in pictures he has >>) And been on a 5 day long car ride across the country. So I guess he lives dangerously. lmao

When I dress him I am careful to watch his face since I couldn't do a face up to save my life, but I twist his arms all around--and I'm not to careful with those Lol So I guess--I'm...careful but not overly careful? >>

    16. I treat mine in between cause I know they're not porcelain and I know they're not indestructable either. They've taken some falls and have been just fine

    17. I'm pretty heavy handed with my dolls. I'm always careful with their face-ups but I have no problem carting them around the house or even out in public. Heck three of them sleep in the bed next to me. Also I'm pretty sure each and every one of them has taken a tumble at some point.

If they just sat around in their boxes or a glass cabinet I don't think I would enjoy them as much. That was the big appeal for me, unlike anime figures and dolls, you can "play" with bjd.

    18. *snerk* relative to my other toys, I treat my bjds carefully simply because they WERE expensive (I was very hard on my toys as a kid). I also do my own faceups but do my best to preserve them since they were time intensive. That being said, Most of my dolls have small scratches or dents that, if they're bad enough or obvious enough I can remove, I just don't put the effort in most of the time. When I first got a bjd I was a bit terrified of hurting him...then he fell off the table and was fine. After that I was quite a bit more blaze about damages. I would be sad if one of my dolls was seriously damaged and I try to catch them if they fall/set up safety pillows for them, but I definitely don't treat them with kid gloves.

Now, I still treat other people's dolls super carefully. While I don't feel so bad about me doing potential damage to my doll I would be devastated if I broke someone else's doll.

    19. i am careful not to drop them, knock them on hard surfaces or chip them. Outside of that, they are fair game for play and poseing. Yes I do touch their face ups all the time. The face ups are sealed with Mr Clear as well as other UV artist grade sealers so I am not sure why some of the folks on here get in a tizzy about touching the dolls face ups. I paid for my dolls, all by myself and I will touch their face ups if I darn well please lol OK well I enjoyed reading this post and i will part with it by saying this; if you are going to drop all this money on a doll, you had better enjoy the heck out of it! Rock it till the wheels fall of and don't let anyone else tell you how you should enjoy something you own.

    20. When I got both of my dolls, I was super gentle. Of course, I was more gentle with my first than my second, but they were two different sizes, and one was super floppy... but I started off being overly gentle. With my first, I used to put a tissue under any place she sat to protect her from possible stains. Now, I don't do that.

I leave my dolls in their dark jeans for weeks. Sure, there's some staining at the knees, but it's nothing a magic eraser can't get rid of. I didn't do their face ups, but I don't keep the rule of "don't touch the face up" too much. I try to avoid touching it too much at one time if I can, but if I need to, I will.

I don't have a case for my MSD, and the second time I took her out, I put her in a plastic bag. The bag was somehow dirty, and left marks on her neck (she had a face protector on, luckily), and I somehow forgot her head cap, but still brought her wig - which wouldn't stay on because she had no head cap.

Fortunately, I've never dropped my doll, or had a head fly off and hit something, but my doll's head cap always detaches when my doll hits the floor. It's only held with magnets, so it's not a strong hold. I have accidentally hit my doll into the wall (a story I've told here, before), and she has fallen (face-first) a few times. Strangely, she's still OK.

But I do treat my dolls carefully, even through all that's happened. I saved up for both my dolls on my own, and it was quite a feat - I have to be gentle because I really don't want to save up for another doll because I broke one of them.
