Sculpt design issues

Feb 2, 2023

    1. Miracle doll's ankles. Oh my god they roll like crazy, can't get the buggers to stand at all.

    2. Totally agree on the ID75s. For me their worst point is the chest joint which is both weirdly stiff and unstable at the same time.

Besides that I have a real gripe with Lilycat's shoulder and thigh joints on my SD Ellana. I adore her aesthetic but especially the thigh joints could use some little locking mechanism that prevents the thighs from constantly turning this way or that while handling the doll imho.

    3. I only have one completely human body, the Impldoll Idol. He was my first BJD, and at the time I didn't want to even consider hybriding but the longer I have him the more his body frustrates me. His wrists can barely turn, his elbows never want to stay bent where I put them. His neck also has almost no range of movement. I don't even bother with the torso movement, because the few times I've tried it's Not Good. Aesthetic wise he's also just so...bulky. After getting a DV body and seeing how simple he is to move, and how he stays in place, it just shows me how lacking the Idol is. I need to put my big person pants on and try to suede the Idol at some point, to see if that helps, it's just...very intimidating.

I also got the jointed hands, and I'm probably going to switch him back to the normal ones. I don't know if this is a problem with all jointed hands (I suspect as much) but the fingers just...always look like little sticks stuck to a palm (which. I mean they are). Just can't get range of motion on them while still looking aesthetically like hands. Especially them thumbs. The fingers also are either "sticking straight out" or "curled completely in" and there is no getting them to stay somewhere in between.

    4. The Iplehouse old EID pre 2012 butt flaps!!!!

they were Intended for mobility, and they sure make mobility—if you mean mobility of the entire thigh dislocating out of his butt.

and then, I knew what I was getting into when I bought it, but the nobilitydoll muscular female body is so bad at being a body that it’s notorious. I have it, it has to wear very tight pants to not dislocate it’s entire butt too

    5. I think Apollo would work on the Resinsoul Cen body. I don't personally own a Cen, but I do have a Yi, and I like the way his body poses.

My least favourite body is a Mystic Kid body that I use for my DZ Deer. It's too chunky and there's no way to make it look elegant.

    6. There was no wrist joint. The hand simply rested on the arm nub.

    7. Second this. I have this same doll and I have similar issues. I actually fell out of love with this very quickly because of it. The hands and feet are my favorite part because they’re so dainty, but I ended up not loving the poseability. The body is definitely sculpted nicely but it doesn’t have a range of movement, it’s just one solid body piece with no chest movements. And it definitely won’t stand or sit without some major effort. Sad to say but it is my least favorite of the dolls I owned for this reason.

    8. This is just a reminder...

It is fine to give reviews of doll bodies and point out engineering problems and things that could be improved!
Just make sure we keep things kind! So far, good job everyone!

I'd also say, if you've seen a brand do something excellent or make an improvement from one body to the next, why not mention that too?

    9. my best poser is my model delf boy, next to my FL dolls (f60/mnf). I have to say I'm lucky with my FL posing I guess, because I don't have most of the problems mentioned :frownyblush: even the hands falling off on mnf - my magnets are super tight among pretty much everyone, one time i even ordered new extra hands with a new doll and the channel was so tight I had to sand the inside of the hand to get it to fit on any of my dolls LOL Though I also happen to take off the hands while I'm positioning everything just in case, I tend to be clumsy or might want to change the hand, so i rather just do that when I'm done with all the positioning and snapping arms into place. Maybe that's why? I dunno.

but my worst posers are a tie among the JID Iplehouse, an old, old Souldoll SD body, or my HZBJD boy. The JID body was immediately replaced by the Model Delf, which I got on a whim because of the same proportions. The hips absolutely made no sense to me and the feet but no ankle part... baffling. I had no idea how to pose him and keep a pose.

The souldoll body refuses to cooperate with any elastic I've found. I have plenty single jointed bodies but the joints never want to actually stay in place, no matter how tight or loose or sueded she is. At least she's pretty in her eternal standing and wired to a base position

And then my HZBJD........hoo boy......lets just say, he's been a floating head for a while.

I think a lot of my issues though are because aside from the newer FL ones, everyone else is mainly on older bodies from before a company refined them more, or from the primarily single jointed days.

    10. I realize single joints aren't anyone's jam anymore, but I always thought they were elegant. I think the Narae 43 body was one of my favorites ever even though it didn't have the range of movement a double jointed body would.

I know now that people think lack of double jointing is a design issue, but I think I almost always preferred it aesthetically and still do.

    11. Yessss sameeee, I am hoping to replace my old KDF body this year. I just can't stand it any more, posing her is so frustrating with her legs constantly bending!

    12. @vermaxen I have seen a lot of people complain about single joints being obsolete but I still have bodies like that and I know there are surely people who still appreciate them. There have been plenty of double jointed dolls I didn't enjoy posing as much as single jointed ones I have. I will still intentionally choose single joints and even a single part torso sometimes because I like them and they work great as long as your expectations are within their achievable parameters. :whee:

    13. I found out relatively early that body engineering was extremely important to me. I started out with Resinsoul 1/6s and found myself getting really frustrated and disillusioned, because a lot of their engineering is very limited. The cup-joints are worse than just single-jointed, and the elbows are sculpted facing in towards the waist. If you’ve ever noticed a kind of “telltale resinsoul pose”, I feel like I can guarantee it’s due to the elbows.

I happened to get a 1/6 DollZone doll in an event, and as soon as I started posing it, I couldn’t go back! Mobility joints, double-joints, peanuts engineered correctly so the lower arm can swivel, omg. She just posed so beautifully and naturally, no need for hot-gluing, wiring, or modding (all of which were things I’d had to do on the Resinsouls).

Experiencing that doll made me super quickly understand why my Resinsouls were bothering me so badly. I actually even paid Resinsoul an extra $80 on my next order to have them implement some of the better engineering onto the body I bought. In the end though, it still ended up with the same issues, but just “slightly less”, and I ended up selling all my Resinsouls.

They’re a lovely company and I will never complain about their effort or their service, but I really do wish they would bring all of their engineering up to date. Even just unifying their body options so that you don’t have to email with a list that’s like “the elbows of this doll and the thighs of that doll, and the torso of another doll please” in order to access all of their joint options - but that’s another topic I guess haha. Plus of course, all of this is dependant on what’s important to you. Natural poses are highest priority to me, I want to be able to pose a doll looking like they are fully interacting with their environment, not standing apart from it. That’s not as important to other people.

I still check out Resinsoul releases every so often, but I can’t bring myself to ever buy again unless I see a dramatic all-new body sculpt!

    14. I'm not very fond of the type of thigh-to-torso connection that connects the upper thigh balls directly to the torso. It's hard to explain haha but Dollstown Elf has this system. To me it seems to make standing posing rather unstable (at least it does on the 17cm doll I actually own that has the same system). But on the other hand, the Dollstown Elf body has the most beautiful collar bones + neck sculpting and the hands are so delicate and pretty!

Other features I don't care for as much:
      1. Magnetic hands and feet that don't have a proper ball joint so that while they are very expressive on their own, you can't position the wrist/ankle expressively. I don't want the fact that you can change hands/feet out easily through magnetic connection to mean that the wrist/ankle joint itself is static. I've experienced this with Bimong's more recent dolls - even though they are magnificent posers otherwise.

      2. Knees sculpted so that there is a "shelf" over the knee, which looks nice and smooth when the leg is straight but shows when the leg is bent. I much prefer actual knee peanuts with sculpting to indicate the kneebone. Argodoll's original female body has this design, for example, and even though I really like that body (I think it has beautiful proportions, lovely natural bust options, poses well, etc.) the awkwardness of the bent knee does catch my eye in photos.

    15. I am not a good judge of sculpting - I generally am okay with how a naked body looks because I am going to cover it in clothing haha!

But for posing, despite my love for these dolls, I do get annoyed. Soom's Super Gem Male bodies have a tendencies to not like to stand on their own. These bodies are from 2016 and 2017. I have to fight their knees to stay straight, even on a doll stand. I think they have a separate hip joint and sometimes I have to wrestle that. Oddly enough, I don't think I have to fight my other 2016 body as much...or he just likes me haha! And sometimes their magnet hands like to pop off but I do like being able to switch them out so I live with that haha! So they live on doll stands.

My Soom mini gems are very kicky but I might actually need to restring them.

I really struggle with my Minifee who is on the male active body - especially after I have had him sitting. I love that I can have him sit crossed legged but when I try to straighten his legs to have him stand, I struggle to get the joints rotated back into position. I've had to undress him and constantly rotate the legs around and around until I somehow get it right. I think I don't understand how to use the little plate that is installed between the hip and thighs. So I tend to leave him in one position all the time because I just get too mad at him.

Bodies I DO LOVE: Withdoll. I can just pose and plop and they stay all day. My one Luts Model delf is the same way, and so is my Latidoll Censya. I can just stand them and admire them.

Honestly with a doll stand, I can forgive all engineering flaws.

    16. My Iplehouse EID boy from the original run of Akando has dreadful posing. One of these days I'mma take a dremel to that boy again and see what I can't do by way of mods, because it's either that or find him a new body.

    17. I have a mature tiny xagafoll silvia (boy vers) and it is a lovely little body, delicate and elegant... But the knees are horrible, at least for my needs. They can only do a 90°fold,which is great if the doll is sitting onna chair, but the doll can't kneel at all, or sit in most other position. From photos it looked like the knee had a double joint, but actually it's more of a cup system i guess? Very unpleasant for me and I want to either give the doll another body or mod the knees... But that's just me, I guess others might be less bothered.

    18. Most little quirks I can easily shrug off or try and remedy through modding, sueding or wiring. There are a few, however—that do arise a bit more of an irksome reaction over most others.

When it comes to my MNF a-line girl, I have to echo a lot of the same sentiments. She's a great little lounger who has a slightly better than decent range of posing in regards to the arms (those wrist joints in combo with the magnet hands provide a nice, natural range of movement/posing), but when it comes to her legs...that's another story. As stated earlier, she lounges great in a sink-back chair designed for that, but she has a harder time with sitting in a proper straight-back chair. She has a tendency to lean back a bit. Also, those knee joints make her look extremely awkward when trying to kneel for prayer to her deity—so to speak :XD:

Also—gotta parrot some of the same regarding the old Iplehouse SID girl body. Those weird additions to the thigh/buttocks joint feel unnecessary, and those elbow joints..if one weren't curious and willing to play around with the joints to figure out their posing, it could easily making the process frustrating.

My Arkdoll boy in general has this wonderful ability to take on a lounging/lying down pose. When it comes to range of motion at his wrists, however....let's just say those U-shaped connection points give very limited range for hand positions. Also, this one's more of a straight for the company issue than an overall one, but—he came strung so tight that the waist joint seemed almost glued in place. I worried about causing damage while trying to unstring him to remedy the issue. In the end I added an additional loop of string between the neck and lower body strings to loosen him up, and that seemed to do the trick after making a few adjustments.

When it comes to my Impldoll girls, I'm good with the majority of their posing, but when it comes to the hip joints—well...the FGB and SGB have some annoying issues. On the SGB, it's the lack of a thigh joint. The SGB only has the slit for the string to pass through, which leaves the range of motion quite lacking. She's a solid sitter, but if I want her to pull her knees close to the chest, well...that would require a lot of modding/adjustments to achieve it. When it comes to the FGB, it's the flimsiness of the round cup joint that can be obnoxious when posing. It requires having the string pass through the channels just right to get her posing properly. Otherwise she's a pretty nice poser.

Beyond these, any other complaints I have are minor to a degree that I can work with them.:kitty2

    19. THIS I completely understand. I've never been a fan of just a single hip joint because as you mentioned without allowing the doll to be able to slouch it's just really stiff. I'd 100% always prefer a chest joint.

I do think a combo of the two would be ideal to get a more realistic torso posing. I haven't quite found a hip joint I like though construction wise. It's usually leaves pretty noticeable gapping. I wonder if that could be solved by making a closed shape at the end of the hips with lots of ledges to lock the movement.

    20. The Myou 1/4 Girl Body 3. It's a pretty body, but the way the hip joints are designed cause the doll to be incapable of sitting up without support. Plus, I always struggle posing the legs because the joint is so slippery from the lack of friction. Even after sueding, I'm still having these issues with the posing and it's pretty frustrating.
