Sculpt name turning you off the doll?

Nov 11, 2012

    1. I like the DOD Sha's sculpt, but the name is the nickname of my friend and this friend doesn't like dolls, so this mold-name is kind of strange for me...

    2. Resinsoul Dong. :doh
I would have to really love that sculpt to get over having to say "This is my Dong" ...
      "It's a what?"
      "It's a DONG."
Aside from that, and perhaps some names others have mentioned like Lucifer, I don't think I've run into any other names that have connotations like that strong enough to discourage me from owning the doll itself. Certainly there are some that might be a real mouthful or difficult to pronounce, but sometimes they can still be really fun to say. Pukipuki Pongpong! Say it and smile! xD

    3. It also depends on what you associate with the particular name.

For instance Lucifer. I'm roman catholic and I know that it is the name of the angel-who-became-satan.
But all that really ever comes to mind for me is the stupid cat from Cinderella.
Thus, I don't really associate anything horrendous with the name.

Similarly for Dong. I understand the connotations, but I got over my giggle fits of weird sounding foreign words in the process of learning Japanese. There are heaps of words that sound like slang terms in english, but I try to take it from the point of view that I don't know the original context/meaning so I can't really judge their use of such words.

But thats experience and personal preference. I can understand why some are put off by such things.

    4. I personally ignore back stories and names so it doesn't affect the doll's story that I make. Sadly, I'm not too imaginative with names, so I hope I like the sculpt name because I probably wouldn't change it ~ c':

    5. Sometimes the name of the sculpt gets stuck in my head so I can't connect as easily.. But usually it's not a big deal.

    6. I seem to have a problem naming my dolls. I dunno, maybe I am still waiting to bond with some of them - ok, all of them. I have 6 and haven't come up with a name for one of them yet. I refer to them all by their sculpt name. So I guess, it is a bit important to me. When searching for dolls, nice sculpt names tend to get me to look at the doll. Horrible sculpt names - I don't even take a look. I know I might miss out on a beautiful doll, but I seem to form an image in my mind with sculpt names.

    7. I just realised today my boyfriend shares a last name with a popular doll company, with the "f" in the company name being changed to a "ph" for his last name. I'm now wanting them to release a doll with his first name, even if I dislike the sculpt, I'm sure I'm able to do something nice with it!

    8. It can affect me, to an extent. I wanted an AoD Juli for awhile because she has my name. But I really don't care for her sculpt, so I didn't get her. There's another doll that has the name of a former friend that treated me horribly. I wouldn't buy that doll because I wouldn't want to be reminded of the person every time I said the sculpt name. Luckily, it's not a sculpt I'd want anyway.

As far as slang or body part names...I really don't care. Yes, I giggled immaturely every time I told people the sculpt name of my AoD Hun Dong. But it never bothered me.

the only ones I have issues with are the ones I have no idea how to pronounce. Kane is a Crobidoll Ys. Y-S? Eees? Yes? lol However, if I love the sculpt, a difficult to pronounce name won't stop me from buying. Neither will a name like Lucifer. I don't belong to a religion where that might be an issue.

    9. I don't really have that problem.
A lot of times I don't even notice the name unless I like it enough that I consider purchasing it in the future.
Even then, I don't really care what the sculpt name is as long as the doll is beautiful.

    10. Nope, never. It's not like I'm going to ever use the name except to tell other people what sculpt the doll is, so I don't mind.

    11. Names are just names to me. If I like the sculpt I do not care what the company names them.

    12. Like Harlequin-Elle said, the only thing about company names that annoys me is when they're hard to spell/pronounce(Like DollZone Stramonium. Love the sculpt, plan on BUYING the sculpt, hate the sculpt name).
Otherwise, unless I really like the sculpt name enough that I want to keep it I usually just end up changing the name anyways, so I see no point in not buying a doll just because of the sculpt name. I'm more picky about the actual looks of the doll. But that's just me.

    13. i can see why it would be a problem for some people. yes, i hate some sculpt names, especially the resinsoul names.. (short names in particular) but it would never completely turn me off from buying it.

    14. One of the dolls I own had the sculpt name changed during preorder as it meant something offensive in one of the European languages. I wonder if the "offensive" name put anyone off... I just found it funny, but respect the company for changing the sculpt name for that reason.
Anyway, generally I don't care about sculpt names. It's the doll I'm buying, not sculpt name.
Some of the sculpt names I don't like, yeah. Like, some Chinese names are hard to pronounce/spell, or some names that seem too weird. But it doesn't affect my interest (or lack of) toward the doll itself.

I'm naming them in my own way later, so it really doesn't matter what the sculpt name was, even if it was Aetfhghjbyacl or something (would be a pain to spell when you need to state it somewhere though).

    15. Nah, it doesn't bother me at all. I am a Christian, but names like 'Lucifer' are popular with pop culture and don't bother me. The ones that sound weird, well, you aren't going to call it that anyway. And the ones that could be other, more offensive terms... Well, I have an uncle named Dick. When they named him Dick, it wasn't a slang word yet. Now he gets flack all the time. Heck, for all we know 'Mary' or 'Bob' could be slang terms for offensive things ten years from now. Once upon a time, the wind was all that blew! They do make me laugh sometimes, however, and I do wish I'd been there when the company realized what the word 'Penis' means in english, LOL!

    16. I do like it when companies have a story for the doll, and the story effects me a lot. However, I tend to ignore the name if I don't like it.

    17. I have definitely had a sculpt name keep me from liking a doll as much. It wasn't the sculpt itself that I disliked, in one case I actually really liked the sculpt, but the name of it was associated with/to someone/thing that I disliked immensely and I just could not get over it. And then there are the cases of names like Dong, who is a RS I think(?) and I just couldn't be serious about that lol. To be all 'oh let me show you the doll I've been considering...that is Dong...' yeah. I still giggle. :)

    18. Being an English-speaking Korean, it's a little harder for me to find an 'awkward' or 'strange' name I'd be turned off by. In fact, I'm pretty sure the names I personally chose for my own dolls would end up in the category of names people want to avoid here. Ha-ha.

But more than half the time I actually barely look at a doll's background or sculpt name. I just see a pretty picture and save the link in case I want to buy them later on. Wow, maybe I'm really dense and simple when it comes to internet shopping.

    19. That happend to me one time. I just couldn't buy the doll with my name, a Blossom Doll Gine. I just was too freaked out by this.

Also, there is this rather unknown doll company which names the dolls 'Mumu', 'Popo' and so on, all german words for ugly body parts, which I find also rather lol-ish.

    20. It wasn't until I saw it mentioned in this thread, that it occurred to me, that some people would find Lucifer offensive.
I've owned a Lucifer, and I never thought twice about it. Lucifer is, for me, just a mythological name alongside other religious names.
But I've never seen a sculpt name that turned me off a doll. Made me laugh? Sure, but it didn't make me like the doll any less.
