Sculpt name turning you off the doll?

Nov 11, 2012

    1. Woahh I never thought that Lucifer would be offensive... As a Christian myself I've never been particularly bothered by such things. I have seen a few dolls that had names that seemed like not a lot of forethought went into them and it made me a little sad, but not sad enough that I didn't enjoy the sculpt.

    2. I mostly only look at character design, I know when I buy a sculpt I'll be giving it my own name and backstory, so I usually don't read what they have because I don't want to bias my view on the doll. So usually, no I don't let those things get in the way if I really like a sculpt!

    3. It's really interesting you bring this up because I ran into this same problem very recently. Fairyland just released a new girl, Celine and the sculpt is absolutely beautiful. But a very petty and very long debacle with an old classmate of mine makes me dislike the name, so I don't think I could ever bring myself to really truly want her. Which is alright because I'm so infatuated with the Chloe :) Otherwise I've never had an issue with the "default" names and find it interesting to see what the company thinks suits that mold.

    4. I usually don't have a 'problem' with the company's name for the sculpt. I have an image of my own character in my head and look around for a face that fits. Recently however I have been looking for a boy doll to fit my character "Shane." I found a sculpt I really, really think will fit him well. Problem, the sculpt's name is Shane. >.< Just kinda... gaah.... just because I don't like the idea of keeping the doll's factory name... even though it may fit perfectly... it's feels like you are being unoriginal (at least to me)... I don't know... maybe I should just let it go... but daaaang it is quite annoying.

Maybe I could look at it as "meant to be..."

      No... not working yet. xD

    5. The names don't bother me at all. I like reading backstories and seeing when companies have inventive or clever ways to name their dolls. Granted, I've never loved a sculpt name so much I kept it for the doll, but it's a non issue for me.

Soo or Woo sounds Korean to me. Since I love Korean culture a lot and have Korean friends, I only associate a fondness when I hear names that sound Korean or even asian in general.

    6. I just tend to avoid doll sculpts with my name (there are two I know of). If only because I'm worried owning one will make me seem overly narcissistic :sweat

    7. I generally don't care about sculpt names. I wouldn't be able to buy a doll with my ex's name because I wouldn't want to keep typing it over and over every time I posted it.

    8. This hasn't happened to me yet, though I suppose it could happen in the future. I'm not too picky when it comes to names and as far as I'm concerned, if I like the sculpt the name is unimportant.

    9. I don't pay attention to the names because I'm going to rename them myself to make them more personal

    10. I never pay attention to the sculpt name. I think they are amusing at best and the fact that many of them end up being similar across companies.

    11. I don't let the sculpt names bother me. If I did, I wouldn't own a Pupu and a Kaka! lol

    12. Why would it? I'll rename her anyway when she comes!

    13. I dont buy a sculpt name, I buy a doll, and as soon as she arrives, sculpt name start to exist somewhere so far away, as a previous life.

    14. Hmm, this has never happened to me. I have found myself thinking that some sculpt names are kinda silly, but once they come to me, I rename them anyway so it doesn't much matter.

However, I have found myself really liking a sculpt name. My Luts SDF Noelia... I almost had a hard time calling her by her real name I liked her sculpt name so much :)

    15. I'm not very good at selecting names. Everything I come up with sounds ridiculously pretensious. Therefore my dolls keep their mold names for a very long time. As for liking or disliking a doll because of its name, that hasn't happened to me yet.

    16. Mostly I just find it amusing what some companies come up with for different sculpts. I can't say that it has ever turned me off to a doll, though, to date. Unless a company dubbed a doll Hitler or something, I don't think it would make a difference.

    17. This has never happened to me, but maybe if it were the name of one of my ex's or someone that I dislike I can see it affecting my view on the doll.

    18. It's as irrelevant to me as the backstories some have.^^;

Only if it was like the name of someone I had some sort of relationship with e.g. Partner, ex-partner, family member, then it would get a reaction out of me. If I liked the doll enough then I wouldn't care since I'd just be renaming them anyway.(￣◇￣;)

Also I'll just throw out there I don't even know how to pronounce the sculpt of my own doll. LOL. *hugs him*

    19. The thing about a sculpt name is that you will always be stuck with it no matter what, even if it's not important to you and you plan on renaming the doll anyway.

As for me, in a pretty recent development, there is a certain common girl's name that turns my stomach when I hear it or see it. I've seen this name on six BJD sculpts so far, not to mention it seems to be a popular name to actually name the doll. Luckily I'm only mildly interested in one of these sculpts, and it's the only one that spells it differently so that helps... Edit: Make that six, and there is one I am VERY interested in! FML:doh

The only other name I can think of is Dream of Doll Pitts. When I hear that name I immediately think of two nasty, sweaty armpits.

I'm also sick of female names ending in "a"! (Which is a shame since that certain name I mentioned doesn't!) It's not that I don't like them...after all my username is this way (luckily my real name isn't), it's just that it's overused and is particularly noticeable when you start collecting female dolls.

    20. I laughed pretty hard at the "Pitts" comment above.

Anyway, names don't bother me, as evidenced by my own doll list. I haven't got a clue how to pronounce "Siean" and what the heck an "E-An" is is anybody's guess. (Although I suspect it's a weird corruption of a Korean name or something.) I could see a name I really liked being a factor in a purchase, but a name I dislike doesn't do much, since I'm just going to rename them anyway. (Speaking of which, my Leeke Mabel still needs a name.)
