Sculpt name turning you off the doll?

Nov 11, 2012

    1. Yep, I admit that I can get turned off a sculpt because of its company name.

I could not buy a Lucifer, no matter how gorgeous he was. (I actually did have one I liked until I saw the name.) Nor would I buy a Demon-of-whatever or God-of-whatever sculpt even if he was exactly what I had been looking for.
Basically any name I would see in a negative connotation would effect my desire for the sculpt.

    2. Turning me off no, on the contrary, turning me in xD When I first saw the MiniFee Chloe I liked her but in a normal way like: she's cute but nothing else, but I read the name and fell in love with her, Chloe is one of my favourite names. Turning me off maybe it would happen with a sculpt named Raquel, Monica or Irene, those names bring me bad memories, or reaaally ugly names (in Spain we have the ugliest names ever! :D).

    3. I'm actually surprised so many people are bothered by default names. I don't even think of them as 'names', just an easier form of Item Number (imagine trying to remember which doll you were buying if it was Number TX36461 - or did I want TM36472?)

Personally I don't care what the default name is, even if it's Satan or my ex-boyfriend-from-hell. Just like a kid with a Barbie doll, you're going to rename that doll anyway!

    4. This is such a good question! Fortunately, ever since I started collecting BJDs, the names did not sound like any human name that I did not want to be reminded of. If you know what I mean! But yes, I do avoid a doll because of its name, if it gives me a bad taste, reminds me of a nasty human.
      Silly, I know.

    5. Of course, if you are truly bothered by it, I do believe you should just listen to your inner voice and not get a doll that would bother you with negative implications :) (Just want to be supportive of everyone!)

    6. I personally don't rename my dolls...so this doesn't apply to me.

As for names such as "Lucifer" turning people off, that doesn't bother me at all especially since I'm not religious.

    7. ...I would have said not at all until BBB brought out their recent 70cm guy, I can't help but snigger internally everytime I see it written down - so I don't think I could bring myself to buy him, just because anytime someone asked what sculpt he was I'd have to reply!

I know there are only so many syllables out there, but still, I'm fairly immature sometimes...

    8. Doll sculpt names never bother me. A lot of them are ridiculous! Like dolls that have an alphabet letter or number for a name. lol I name my dolls what I want to, so what the company calls them makes no difference to me! The only doll names I've kept are Roke (Fairyland) and Frankenstein (Ringdoll) because I actually liked those names and found them fitting. But for the most part I like making up my own names. It's one of my favorite things about the hobby!

    9. I'm fine with the names either way since I intend to rename my dolls. That said, it helps if the sculpt name isn't too hard to pronounce or sound like a bad/rude word etc, because I realise that very often, people ask for the sculpt name along with the doll's name, and I end up having to pronounce the name anyway. I do however, kind of remember my dolls as sculpt/theirname, like Lisheboy/Gabby. Haha. But that's just me.

    10. Sculpt name doesn't turn me off from a whole doll, no matter how weird. My first doll is going to be FantasyDoll Lagina -- that's a pretty weird name, but I don't let it bother me.

    11. Since I will rename the doll anyway, it doesn't matter. Although my first doll, Melissa, I had intended to rename Morgaine, but ended up calling her Melissa Morgaine. Just seemed right somehow!

    12. Sculpt names don't bother at all since I get my dolls for their sculpts and not their names. Though it can be hard to search for information of a particular sculpt because their names are only one letter or something and that can be very annoying...

Anyway, names can always be changed and personalized. Once I get a doll, it's mine, and I can call them anything I want!

    13. Hahaha where I just see it - I had exactly that "no-go-name"-experience the other day, on the Doll Chateau website. I looked there at a pretty boy face. Then I saw the name - Ingemar! :o I really never could buy him!! The background is that I know a real Ingmar, he's something like my father-in-law. It would ever remind me of the real one and that would be very creepy, especially since I can not stand him. *_* I know it's silly but I can not change it :sweat

    14. Two words: Bobobie Dong. I -hate- the name. It sounds so obscene... the other male name, "Long", still sounds weird. Didn't stop me from buying him, but I've already Renamed him so I don't have to say "Hey, Dong! How's it going?" when I walk into the room.

When he gets here. >< Until then, I'm just waiting for my Romeo. That's his name. I'm sticking to it.

    15. I'm not really 'turned off' by a sculpt name.. but Little Monica's 'Dyuke' name makes me giggle. xD

    16. Sculpt name doesn't matter much for me, but I'm glad KIEN and VEZETO has a nice ring

    17. I can understand this. I've seen dolls that I like quite a bit, but then they had a name I hated. For example there is a doll that I like quite a bit and has the same name as an uncle of mine that is nothing but trouble, so it immediately has a negative connotation for me. But I would never let it stop me from buying a doll I loved. I would just rename it anyways.

I've actually had the opposite experience, where a dolls name convinced me to actually get it. I planned on naming my first girl Nana or Cherry. I was really torn on which sculpt to get, and then Luts released their Nana KDF. I love her sculpt--it was like fate! I plan on getting her sometime in May or June and I'm going to keep the sculpt name ;)

    18. What bothers me is when I can't figure out what to name my doll aside from the sculpt name! I feel weird keeping the same name that the company gave the sculpt, just a weird little problem of mine.

But I see what you mean, if a doll company gave one of their sculpts a really bizarre name, I might just not be able to dissociate that sculpt from the super weird name. That and when a company gives a sculpt a character I really don't like, as in their style or face up, etc. Because then I don't really know how else they could look if styled differently and I feel like I'm stuck with that character kinda? Aaaah I'm so weird when it comes to dolls. :?

    19. LOL this topic is hillarious! XD i don't think a sculpt name could turn me off the doll since i rename all my dolls and never keep the sculpt name. if that were the case i would not have purchased soom's shoshon and hyperon....i find their names so weird!!!! @__@. though i must admit that if it was an offensively grotesque name, i would probably refrain from buying it..it all depends on the mood...

    20. I do tend to just ignore the name of the sculpt if I don't like it or don't think it suits because I don't really care for the pre-made backstory and I always pick another name for the doll =) I do tend to just ignore the name of the sculpt if I don't like it or don't think it suits because I don't really care for the pre-made backstory and I always pick another name for the doll :)
