Sculpt name turning you off the doll?

Nov 11, 2012

    1. i tend to ignore the sculpt name.. i tend to rename my dolls as well, and i like the sculpt for the look

    2. Actually...now that I think about it, I have that dilemma alot. Though most of the time, I'm turned off by the doll for another reason, the name just adds to it. For example, there have been times I'll see a fabulous doll picture, and then I find out it's a Luts Delf El? Or a Shiwoo, Shushu, Mirwen....any of those, goodbye. Don't get me wrong, those are all lovely dolls, but any time I see those names mentioned, the doll loses appeal to me, mostly because of their overexposure when I first got into this hobby and again, their names... just eh. One doll [of many] whose name just completely turned me away though? Elfdoll Tasha.

    3. Only doll who's name has turned me off so far is Iplehouse I - it's so hard to search for owner pictures, but her sculpt is really appealing to me.

    4. Oh, hah, that's really funny, I've never thought that way about them. I've seen some kind of weird names for doll sculpts, but it's never been a factor in whether I'm gonna buy it or not.

    5. I don't think a name would keep me from buying what i wanted, but it does make things difficult sometimes. The two letter names are hard to search for, and its a bit awkward to admit that I have no clue how to pronounce a few of my doll's sculpt names. (is Qi pronounced quee, chee, zhee? is Que prounounced kay, quay, zhway? chay?) Then there are the ones that sound like slang terms for body parts...

    6. Yeah it sometimes does. I liked Iplehouse Lee but it's the name of my brother so it just felt weird. I also tend to write off names of two particular ex-boyfriends. I can't like a doll no matter how I try with those names.

    7. Actually for me, they tend to stick around in my head in an opposite sense. For example, I think Theo is the PERFECT name for Iplehouse's Theo, and I wish I could keep the name without being unoriginal and just not bothering to name him, which is how it would sound.
But more on topic with a name bothering me, I really like Doll Love God-Enjoy. That name is admittedly a turn off due to how lolz-worthy it is, but it wouldn't keep me from getting the doll. I would of course be renaming her, but again it would keep coming up for the sculpt name.
One has to wonder how some of these names are invented. XD

    8. I mostly ignore sculpt names, and I rarely read backstories. I'll admit that a better sculpt name will jump out at me more, but it doesn't affect how I feel about the doll itself.

Although I do get weirded out about the names that are the same as people I know.

    9. I think the majority of people rename their dolls. I certainly do. Most of the time, I think of my DS Hound as "Chulyen," my IH Cocori as "Hannah," and so on. So most days, the sculpt name rarely comes up in my mind.

But I do get where a sculpt name can have a negative connotation enough to turn some off. No matter how elaborate a back story I give my doll or how firmly I might think of my doll as "so-and-so," at some point I WILL have to state the sculpt name. It's going to happen, there's no way of avoiding it.

With that in mind, I do think I would be more hesitant to buy dolls with obscene-sounding or tongue-twisting sculpt names. If I love it enough to over come that, then it is definitely meant to be. So far, I've been lucky in not falling in love with a sculpt with an unpronounceable or embarrassing name.

    10. Haha I know what you mean, it took a while for me to warm up to one doll because his sculpt name was the same as someone I didn't like, but I saw a limited version and fell in love. I will buy him if I can!

    11. Like HighPriestessIce, I stay away from particular ex-boyfriends or people named that way that I just don't like in real life. Often it'll actually make me sad, because I really like the sculpt but cannot bear to think that they're called the same thing as that person who made my life shit for a while >>

    12. I can get an initial feeling of disapproval when names are of family members or anything that may be emotionally close to me, but I can ignore that, most of the time, since all the sculpt name is is a designation for reference. I do try to give extra attention to the sculpt I would have avoided if the name is throwing me off, so I don't just hop it, kinda trying to reverse it, haha. Sadly it's possible I wouldn't be able to get a doll I really liked if the name was disturbing to me, but I can't know unless that happens. (Which I would hope does not!)

    13. I finally found a sculpt name that turned me off. Fantasy doll Lagina. Just sounds too much like vagina. Not that I have a problem with vagina (quite the contrary) but just doesnt work for a doll for me lol.

    14. If I fall in love with a doll, the sculpt name doesn't matter. But there are some names I would feel a little uncomfortable when talking about them. I have no problems saying "I bought a Luts Bory or Soom Dia, etc." but when it comes to a Popodoll Mumu (Popo means butt in German and often a vagina is called Mumu) this is too much :sweat I'll usually rename every doll I buy, so from the time it joins my family I'd never think of the sculpt name anymore.

    15. If I find a doll that I know I need to adopt, the sculpt name doesn't matter. But I'm hesitant to consider getting Doll Leaves' Fay, since that's my name. I would call her something new, but I'd still have to refer to her as Fay if I anyone asked.

    16. I can see how that would be an issue for you. Fay is actually the girl I just bought and while I fell in lovd with her face, I loved the name too. Faye is the name of one of my long time and favorite characters for an rpg game I played for years. The name didn't make or break her as the one for me, but firmly pushed her into my heart.

When she arrives she will get a new name, but for now calling her Fay makes me smile.

    17. The problem I have with names is if they're shorter than 4 letters it's so hard to find owner pictures... Or if it's a name that's used by more than one company.

Other than that, it doesn't really bother me.
Maybe the one exception for me is Elfdoll Soah - which sounds very much like SOA (the Dutch abbreviation for STD) that "I'm buying a Soah" is a bit off-putting. LOL!!!

    18. Usually, if the doll has a weird/funny/etc name it doesn't bother me much. However, if I have trouble choosing between the dolls of one company, I might choose the one with prettier name

    19. They usually don't bug me since if I really like the doll I just tell myself that I'm going to rename it anyways so it doesn't matter.
But what I don't like is if the doll's sculpt name is the same as someone I know, because I think that if they talk to me and ask what the doll is and I'll have to say the name and they'll be like "But that's my name..." and they might just find me strange for having a doll with the same name as them.
