Sculpts you love vs. matching dolls?

Jan 13, 2009

    1. I buy only the ones I love. I don't really care how they look together. Given that,I do enjoy assymetry in doll photography, they don't have to "match" to make me happy.

    2. For a particular group of dolls I mine, I have been extremely picky about making sure that all of the dolls chosen look visibly related and share common features. They're supposed to be a family and thus I felt they needed to match in a way. This has actually lead to me buying a few sculpts that I wouldn't necessarily have purchased alone.

It doesn't bother me one bit that they don't match any of my other dolls, however. It's only important to me that dolls look visually appropriate with other dolls within their particular story/universe.

    3. I suppose I should clarify just for the record: I'm not saying that all your dolls automatically look alike- I want a DZ Mo and Musedoll Re-che, and a Dollmore Maunier, but the point is, there's definately a unifying feature that draws me to those dolls- the same thing that drew me to my bobobie An and Latidoll Red K- It might be their particular stylization- or the way their chins are shaped- it might even be that they all have a slightly half open eyed feel to them- that's what I mean- not that they look anything alike on the whole, but there's something about them all that draws me in the same way. I look a sculpt and I just know if it's something I could see myself owning or not.

    4. the most improtant thing to me is the sculpt, but when buying dolls who will be family members I like to buy from the same company becuase most companies keep a similar esthetic to the overall look of their sculpts. That's about the only feeling I can really relate to the subject

    5. I tend to favor the general look of dolls from certain companies, but I mostly just buy what appeals to me. And I think what JennyNemesis says is very true...

My dolls are all different sizes and different colored resins, but they are all uniquely mine by the way I customize them.

    6. I was actually thinking of getting another msd that is very different to my other one. Not only are the aesthetics quite different, their portrayed ages are different. To me I think the dolls that grab your heart and squeeze until your wallet cries should be the ones you get. I like the idea of dolls that go together, but I'd rather have ones I love than ones that match. :)

    7. Sculpts trump matching by a little for me. I'll first go for the doll itself. If I really, really like it, I'll get it. Doesn't matter if it matches.

But I'll also buy dolls to match, so I can pose them or pair them up, etc. BUT I have to like the Scupt a LOT. I won't buy something ONLY to match. Sculpt is more important.

I have 3 or 4 large CP/Luts dolls who go together. I have 2 large Volks who don't match as well, but they can pair off on their own.

Tinies--I have two Bambicronies to pair off together. Two Tinybear elves. Three anthros who can go together, but are basically bought on their own 'cause I like them.

One 65/70cm because I had to have him. If I see another to match, I may get one, but having only one on his own is fine, too.

    8. I could care less if they match or not in regards to sculpt. Though when considering size, I will admit that it slightly influenced my decision to purchase my Supia Rosy; I considered my doll family a bit disproportionate, having only mature mini girls and SD boys. In the end, I suppose similarities will arise simply based on doll taste. For instance, I've found that I prefer smaller eyes and more realistic features - in that way, almost all my dolls are aesthetically similar. It's not even a conscious decision; my own preferences ensure a somewhat commonality.

    9. i love it that my dolls dont all match. when i see them all together i think they look perfect^^
my first was from Dollmore and slightly realistic, while my second was from B&G and totally not. i always thought they looked great together despite not matching. since then my dolls have been all over the place. i try to find sculpts that match their characters, but i just really have to love the sculpt to get it. the fact that most of my dolls are from different companies makes me happy, and im going to continue to get a variety. of course im also going to get more Dollmores and B&Gs too, just cause i love the dolls.....:)

    10. Part of me wants to couple my dolls, so they will have partners. I have a Shushu I want to get a partner for and I found that none of the similar size boy dolls appealed to me. I have always adored Bory and whether he will fit with her maturity or not, he is the boy who has always called to me. Whether they pair well together, I bought what I love. Either way I am sure they will be great friends.

I do prefer that they be somewhat similar size though, when getting a partner. I don't know if I could put Lishe with a 70cm doll, not sure how that would look?

    11. I like my dolls to match to some degree... generally, whichever one I like the best is the one that gets matched around... probably the main reason for the massive flux of dolls I've had over the last two years.

I think it's calming down now.

    12. For me it's definitely 'the sculpt I love'. I love all kinds of different and contradicting things. In fact I try to make sure my dolls don't overlap in style or character type, and this can be very difficult! In spite of my best efforts I often buy dolls that duplicate each other in one element or another. I often sell some on for this reason.
Sometimes it's a question of needing to paint a certain doll that happened to become available when I had the funds to spare... no matter that I already owned something similar.
But I do try to maintain a careful balance in the end. I really try to be disciplined and not be a creature of excess as my basic nature would have...! So I try to make sure all my dolls are sufficiently different from one another.
      I'm not always successful!

    13. I buy what I love o.o If they demand I take them home I do :3 I'll figure out details later.

I'm actually kind of against my dolls matching o.o I have this irrational hatred of dolls having the same body (even if they're from the same company) or fashion. I like my boys mismatched.
The only exception would be my twins. The don't have the same head mold, but it's close enough to tell they could be related. The will have the same body though. Even then they don't really match at all. One is the big manly biker/ bartender and the other is a flaming gay porn star XD (I should not be allowed to assign occupations at 4 am).

    14. I think it depends on what you mean by "matching". I have a DZ mini who blends in pretty seamlessly with our horde, which is largely made up of MNFs and Delfs. So long as the dolls look like they could exist in the same plane of reality (I think a huge-eyed, childlike SD would totally look ridiculous next to them, for example), I'm happy to mix and match depending on the sculpts that strike me. If someone looks like a weird alien in group photos, they go.

    15. Hmm... I am one of the ones who is guilty of wanting my dolls to 'match'. I'm not really basing them on pre-existing characters so that allows me a little more freedom. I guess when it comes to dolls I prefer the more anime-looking, or less realistic, sculpts anyway.
If there ever was a doll that didn't "fit" with the rest of my crew but I totally loved it, nothing would stop me from getting it! :D

    16. I do... both. =P

I find sculpts I love, and then narrow it down based upon if they match. But nothing gets taken off my list; I just have it set out that I'm going to actually buy the matching ones, or at least buy them first. The other ones can come later, if I can justify to myself how they'd fit in. =P

    17. If I don't like the doll, I wont get it. I'm not to concerned with my dolls "matching" together, I don't see a reason to do it that way. These aren't cheap so why buy a doll I don't really like even if it "fits" with my dolls? Just doesn't make sence. I buy my dolls because I fell in love with their scuplt. :)

    18. I think there are ways to get seemingly very different sculpts to "match" up a little, by the way they are styled :) Things such as face-ups having a similar style by way of matching colours, or overall colour scheme, the clothes the dolls wear, or accessories... this sort of thing :) To the OP, I think you could definitely match a DZ sculpt with a Luts Delf ^_^/

Because I'm one of those people who like to have a bit of matchy-matchy in my life, after I got my first girl (9.7 inch head, eyes the size of the moon), I realised I was going to run into some problems trying to find other dolls who'd complement that sort of size. But there are definitely ways of doing it that don't involve just buying a sculpt that's almost identical ^^ I'm sort of lucky in one respect though, as I do love huge-eyed melon-headed dolls, hehe~

    19. *waves*

For me, matching is important. When I was thinking about my first bjd, it was like 'only one, to put it under glass and drool' but now I am considering at least one more SD sized doll;;;; Not because I am in love with bjds, but because my Freeza is lonely - I want to buy her a smiling boy, so he'll cheer her up. I already choosed which one I want - Kawainino Bada - and I am so much worried he wont mach my Freeza at all. That his face if too wide close to her, or to round, or too small, or too big :\ that clouse to her he'll look absolutely ridiculus with his adorable wide smile (and I want my boy smiling no matter that!) and that he'll look much younger than her. And I saw how it looks when girl and boy are VERY different (and boys head is minimee and so much smaller) and it looked horrible X_X So I had an issue of letting Bada go and choosing someone else... but now I am just so in love with Bada I almost dont care if he'll look strange with Freeza. He's just so absolutely adorable, I'll do my best to get him if kawainino will open ordering period again, or if someone will be selling him. He'll be just head anyway. If I'll be dissapointed in him, atleast, it wont cost me that much.

So, kinda, my 'in love' won matching X'D

    20. At first, I wanted to have all my dolls matched. So after my dollzone cherry I got a Luts doll and loved more Luts dolls, and decided to buy only Luts dolls from that day on.

But now I have ordered a soom doll, souldoll doll, and I have also a feeple and a peakswoods doll.

And even my souldoll will have a grey skintone while all my others are white.

So I realized a while ago that I am changing from a "it should match"-type of person to a person that just buys dolls that I like.

Even size-matching is changed with 1 70cm doll next to my 60cm's, with another 70cm doll ordered and 1 80cm mecha angel on my wishlist.
