SD furniture/props

Oct 4, 2021

    1. Hi! I ordered my first doll, a huajing Linda, a couple months ago and since then I've been kind of casually looking around for SD sized props and furniture, But it seems no matter where I look there's not much in that size! I've come across a few chairs and tables but nothing close to the amount of items there are for 1/4 and 1/6 sizes nor the variety.

Does anyone have any good recommendations or places they could point me to? I've found a few things on Etsy and legenddoll but other then that I'm a little lost :( anything is greatly appreciated!

    2. Look for pet furniture! There's a big variety made these days and I've bought some for my SD. My most recent find was a round hanging chair. Heres how it looked at the store:

And when I brought it home, I threw some small pillows on the back and sides and have my 65cm sitting on it. That looks like this:

Without the back pillows, two SD can comfortably fit. I've also seen small chaise lounge chairs, canopy beds, and other such things made for pets that could easily work for larger bjd. They're pretty sturdy due to being made with pet use in mind. Plus I only paid $60 for this chair in a store. Similar chairs made specifically for bjd in this size would easily be $100+.

    3. @Cap'n .
Ooooh, very nice! Thanks for a great tip! <3:thumbup<3

    4. Also search for doll furniture that are made for other types of dolls (non-bjds)! You'd be surprised the treasure trove of props, furniture and unique pieces are made for some of the larger brand dolls such as Madame Alexander, etc. I have found some excellent props/furniture for my dolls for a fraction of the cost of what most BJD furniture sells for. At this point I've found so many different types of things at such a low cost I would first recommend looking for non BJD stuff first before spending big bucks direct from a BJD company.

My large 65cm-70cm guys sitting on a Couch/Arm Chair made for vintage porcelain dolls. Got it for a steal at a local doll show, I think $40 for the set:[IMG]

I know you were asking specifically for SD, but just to show the variety of things that exist... I found this cute carriage also at a doll show. I think it was made by a collectible Bear Company. All I need is a horse... lol. My two aristocratic tinies claimed it.

Lastly, you can doctor up props too. I found these empty glass jars/bottles for sale at a doll show and I just fancied them up with some labels and put some glitter in some of them to make them more interesting. I was able to make a little alchemy prop set:

    5. @Dybbuk .
Wow, nice 'doctoring, and great finds indeed! Nice to take a peek at your collection, too!

    6. @Dybbuk reminded me that I too have some "other doll" further that I use for BJD. My favorite is this chair that was made for AG dolls and is the throne for one of my 62cm. Granted I later found out that this is a very expensive chair (around $250+ new) made by an actual furniture maker but I found it on Offerup for $40.

I also have an AG brand shelf thing that I use as a seat for some SD (don't have a pic currently, sorry) that again I purchased at a thrift store not really knowing what it is. I believe I paid $7 for it. It's a wooden counter for an AG brand kitchen set. I painted it and added a cushion to the top and it works great as a seat with added storage underneath.

    7. The details of AG furniture is quite good, but that chair is spot on! I have a couple of their heavy Iron beds, but my Compos have claimed it!

    8. I can concur with what others have said already.
      • American Girl and other brand named scaled doll items (such as My Life As, Disney Animators' Collection, etc)
      • Items meant for pets (cat tents, furniture for dogs, etc)
        • I had luck at the usual places like Petco, Petsmart, Overstock, and Big Lots, but also try Ross, Marshalls, and Tuesday Morning
      • Etsy
Stuff I have found that has worked for my dolls (ranging from Yo-SD to SD13 sized):
      • Checking other BJD companies that are similarly scaled to your current collection, especially ones that have been around for a while (Volks, Luts, Iplehouse, Dollmore, Soul Doll, etc). Just double check the current reviews for any of these and other doll sites, especially in regards to wait times, cost of S&H, how often they restock with new things, and customer service experience.
      • Daiso, Kinokuniya, Tokyo Lifestyle, Book Off, Sanrio, and other similar Japanese stores located in the various parts of the US (better to visit in person as each store has something different to offer and items rotate pretty quickly). Lots of times, you can tell something was totally made for a BJD even though it was not explicitly made for that purpose.
        • Items I have found included: erasers that look like food items (bento boxes, desserts, main courses, sushi, etc), samurai sword/katana letter openers, folding fans, parasols/umbrellas, stuffed animals, licensed figurines, Rilakkuma backpacks (meant to be mini wallets or pouches), licensed anime/manga/video game merchandise perfectly scaled, silk kimono with display stand (SD/SD13 sized), "posters"/mini wall scrolls, hair accessories, jewelry, tatami mats, room dividers, Pokemon stuff, Hello Kitty and friends stuff, more Rilakkuma stuff, stationery, and more.
      • Claire's, Icing, Hot Topic, and their corresponding outlet stores
        • Items I have found: keychain Uno with functional cards, lip balms shaped like licensed food items (Coca-Cola bottles, Hersey's chocolate syrup, etc), hair accessories, jewelry, pins/badges, stickers, etc.
      • Thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc) and other local antique and consignment stores
        • Items I have found: jewelry boxes that look like armoires/dressers/vanities, dollhouse items, jewelry, hats, hair accessories, porcelain tea service items (cheaper than what you find on Amazon but better quality than from Amazon), coasters that look like plates (ranging from fancy etched metal to porcelain), etc.
      • Coach Outlet and Coach
        • Items I have found: keychains that are scaled down versions of their popular purses in both leather, coated canvas, and other materials. Check every season as it changes constantly with different colors, types purses, and usually coordinating bracelets/chains that you can use as the straps for the purses for your dolls.
        • Can also be found at Macy's not only for Coach items but for similar brand name purses (think Michael Kors and the more expensive brands).
      • Victoria's Secret
        • Key chains/charms that look like purses and backpacks. Cheaper quality than the Coach stuff but still cute and totally licensed.
      • Paperblanks, Barnes & Noble, etc.
        • Items I have found: blank journals (sometimes size is "micro" other times "mini"), notepads, novelty items, seasonal items, etc.
      • Display items for furniture (scaled down to doll size)
        • Ikea, REI, local furniture stores, etc. Just ask the store manager if it is up for sale or if they are willing to sell it to you once the item is no longer in season/available. Also ask if they have any damaged display items in the back that is going to be thrown away.
      • Ross, Marshalls, Tuesday Morning, Joanns, Michaels, Overstock
        • Items I have found: jewelry boxes and pin cushions that looks like a French chaise lounge sofa, Christmas stocking holders that look like antique mirrors/vanities, pin cushions that look like dress forms (comes in different colors and sizes), coasters that look like antique plates, metal watering can (functional), Easter basket, straw hat, artificial flowers, feathery wings (Christmas time), empty glass bottles with cork toppers, jewelry, generic doll items (ranging from AG sized to Barbie sized to doll house sized), BJD sized licensed games (I think they were meant as gag gifts or for traveling in the car), functional clipboard with notepad, mini calendars, and more.
Something my in-laws got for me from an outlet was a Royal Albert "Old Country Roses" miniature tea service. It was on super sale as it was missing something. Lenox had sold porcelain coasters in the past of their "Butterfly Meadows" collection that were perfectly scaled plates and currently have some coasters but from a different collection. Something I didn't buy were keychains with shoes on them from G. H. Bass & Co that were actually really well made but I didn't have my chibi doll on me to check if it was scaled right. I also regret not getting a functional cast iron stove (was outside my budget) at one of these places but later I found out it was a super expensive brand and the price I thought was "expensive" was more than half the original price.

It's all about thinking outside the box and having on you a measuring tape to see if something is the right scale for your doll as most places won't say 1/3 or 1/6 or Yo/SD or whatever scale. Once you get into the habit of knowing what size your doll is and what works for your doll, so many things open up! Anyways. Happy hunting!:dance

    9. These are awesome ideas, I'll have to remember these when I can afford getting more SD props!

    10. A lot of props can be handmade or found at random antique, thrift and flea market shops. Also, some American Girl/18" doll stuff works, since it's in scale for 18" child dolls, it can work for 1/3 adults in many cases.

    11. Ahhhh thank you everyone for all the helpful replies!!! This is all super helpful and is really making me motivated to go looking!!

I've never heard of whispering grass before, thank you for sharing it! And yeah it's all either very basic and cheap or super detailed and expensive theres no in between lol

I've seen pet furniture like that before and it never occurred to me to use it for dolls! That chair is so cool too omg great find!!!

omg your tinies are so fancy, that carriage looks awesome!! I don't know why doll shows never crossed my mind before, I'll have to look up to see if there are ones near me, would you say prices at these shows are cheaper then if you were to look for them online? Also that chair is gorgeous, what a lucky find! I've been scrolling through some AG furniture seeing what there is so I'll definitely need to try and look at it with a more creative eye!

Oh wow thank you for all this info!!!! Its super helpful especially with the links and I'll definitely be coming back to look through this for ideas again and again! There's so much creativity in here wow, I never even thought of looking through wallets and other stuff for miniature versions of things! You must have a very practiced eye for all this! I really want a tea set for my doll so I'll definitely be looking out for miniature sets thank you so much for all this work I really appreciate it!!:D

I'm so inspired to go looking through antique shops now lol, I think my doll will be just around the correct height for AG stuff so hopefully that stuff fits!

    12. Definitely look around to see if you have local doll shows near you. Every time I've gone to one, people are selling things at a super cheap price. Many of the vendors are just trying to get rid of stuff. The set of couches and armchair were originally priced at $80 EACH but the selller didn't want to load them back up so she gave them to me both for $40. The carriage (which is solid wood) I purchased for $30. I think when people have to drag the merch and unload it... they're more willing to haggle to get rid of it. ;)

    13. Another place to check is the outdoor gardening section of hardware stores like Lowes or Home Depot. I've found some ornate plant stands that work well as patio chairs or tables for SD sized dolls. They're usually plastic, but they've got that wrought iron look. ^_^

    14. Cool!
