Selling Dolls: Why?

Nov 26, 2012

    1. When I have problems bonding with a doll, or buy one and just do not actually end up liking it, then I will sell it.

:| although honestly, my house has a very low turnover rate. Some of my dolls end up being shelf-sitters, but I rarely sell any of them.

    2. I honestly feel bad because I tend to be really good at getting a doll and then selling it after a few months ._. For the most part, though, it was due to life circumstances or changing tastes. With my first doll, I sort of just outgrew (for lack of a better word) the aesthetic once I exposed myself to more companies and also other people's individual interpretations of sculpts that before were unappealing to me, my second and third doll (well, second doll and third head) left mostly due to lack of inspiration. I find that the biggest reason I sell a doll is because I'm unable to come up with a clear character for it. I have certain characters that I love dearly (and yet would probably never shell just because they're characters that change with my moods), and I'm pretty positive that if I were to come up with a clear shell for them, there'd be an emotional connection there that I didn't get from the dolls that didn't have a character.

    3. For money of new dolls, more space or hobby change, I guess.

    4. I sold my first doll within the first wek of her arrival. I've never once regretted it. When I first discovered the hobby I was very, very eager to get my hands on one of these strange bjds as quickly as possible. So I bought a doll, not because I liked her, but because she was in stock. After she arrived though, I quickly discovered that being patient and waiting, even months, for the doll I really want is worth it. I've bought and sold a lot of dolls, mostly because I'm a very hands on person and want to experience how each sculpt feels in my own hands. Only thaen can I truly decide if I like the doll or not. Also, sometimes when I feel I've "completed" a doll, there's nothing more I can do with them, therefor I sell them to raise money for a new "project" aka doll. Hehe

    5. I'm very careful of which sculpts I want so I really can't see selling any dolls in the near future. Eventually (as in, when I get old & decrepit) I most likely will due to needing the money etc. Also, there are a couple doll BODIES that I may put on the market in order to get ones that pose better.

    6. I've sold dolls for a variety of reasons - generally, though, if I don't love a doll, it usually ends up being sold, given away, or traded. I sometimes buy dolls that seem awesome until I have them, and then I find that they don't look quite right with the rest of my herd, or that they're more frustrating than fun to play with. Also, my storage and display space is limited, so I only want to keep and display the dolls I truly enjoy owning.

    7. I never sold a doll. Just a head that I bought for faceup practice, and I wasn't attached to it.
I'm too attached to my dolls, even to the ones that get less attention. When I take any of my dolls in my hands, the magic always opreates. <3

    8. I tend to sell dolls if they don't quite fit the character I wanted them for. This happened a lot a while back because when I first got into dolls the trend was toward more stylized sculpts, but then things started to shift toward more realistic and that just appealed to me more. So I sold a lot of my old dolls in favor of ones that I felt worked better for the characters.

Do you still own your first doll/ Was it harder to let go of than other dolls?
I still own the first SD I ever got, a Customhouse Chamomile, even though he doesn't represent a character anymore. There are a couple others I haven't been able to part with even after finding replacements, but I do not own the first doll I ever got. That was a Dollmore kid Calvin and while I was very attached for a number of years and kind of wanted to keep him for sentimental reasons, I found that I often forgot he even existed because he was much smaller than my SDs.

It was really hard to actually sell him though. I had to keep telling myself that someone else would give him more attention and I was doing what was best. Illogical, I know, but I still felt bad.

But the part about forgetting him because he was smaller brings me to the other reason I have sold dolls and that was for size issues. I sold all of my MSDs (except for three Unoa face plates I couldn't bear to part with) and I also sold my Mecha Angel because they were either too small or too big.

    9. many many reasons....

1- it's not everything I hoped it would be.
      2- got bored of it.
3- it's too much trouble to find good clothes and accessories for it.
4- I don't like the character it was intented for anymore.
5- and I could definitely use the money for something else (usually a doll that I think will be better).
6- and I don't like having too many. I'm the polar opposite of a hoarder!

    10. do you still own your first doll/ Was it harder to let go of than other dolls?
I do still own my first doll (she'll turn 2 this Christmas :) ) a RS Mei, I've since bought and sold a lot of dolls, mostly because they just weren't the right size, (especially the 68cm one, waaaay to big for me) face-sculpt or I found their posing to be sub-par.

Occasionally I'll buy a doll (usually an in-stock one) just because I'd really like to see it in-person, and if they don't work out I'll give them a nice face-up and put them up for adoption.

and one doll I just couldn't find any shoes to fit her, and I really like doll shoes, so that was a major problem for me.

    11. Well for me it goes something like this:

      1) See cheap/bargain doll and since I love a deal, I buy it on impulse
      2) Recieve doll and it sucks and it was cheap/on sale for a reason (and I can't stand multiple engineering and sculpting flaws)
      3) Resell doll for even less than what I paid (so I am out money and the doll was no bargain at all!)
      4) Angst
      5) Forget all about the last time and do it all over again

    12. It's not as cut and dry as that. There are several reasons that people sell dolls beyond just not liking them anymore, financial situations being just one example. And I can imagine that in an instance like that it's difficult to part with a doll you love, but there's no choice.

    13. I sell dolls because I want to cycle the money for new dolls. That or I just become uninterested in them. I find that it's hard for me to focus on many dolls.

    14. I see... in that case, it would be necessary and that's I understand; I even knew a person who had to do so, and she was very sad about it, but have no choice. But I was talking more about people who sell dolls and don't have economic problems, my question was more about people who was never really 'affectionated' to a doll and after some time decided to sell it, in these chases, if a doll is sold is because they never loved for realsince the first time, I think, but of course depends from person to person, and surely can be other reason for selling a doll if is sold as a 'necessary thing' ... or could happen that you see a doll that you like more than the previous and you will sell you r doll to got the other one that you like mos! These things happens I can undesrstand now.....t

    15. The only reason I'd sell my current doll would be in some kind of financial crisis, like a pet needing surgery or somesuch, a scenario where selling the doll would help someone dear to me.

But if I accidentally or as a gift got a doll that I didn't actually like, I'd definitely sell it to somebody that would give it love. I think first and foremost dolls should be loved, that's more important than me owning them.

    16. I mostly sell my dolls, when I realize the idea isn't working. I've done that with a lot of the dolls from my early time in the hobby. I've also sold dolls, because I realized it was the wrong size. And not to forget, I've sold dolls, because I realized I could get an even better sculpt for the character. :)

    17. I sell dolls because i no longer interested in the sculpt and also i'm not satisfied with the pose of the body, some dolls i sell because they're larger than i thought, i always get new dolls right after they were sold

    18. I've sold dolls and heads that I just fell out of love/never bonded with. I did sell my first after a year or so with it. It was an old-fashioned, unrealistic looking mold and my preferences began to trend towards the more realistic. I used the money to buy a new mold to embody that same character.

Forunately all of my sold dolls have gone to friends, so in a way it's like I didn't have to part with them :)

    19. Personally, as a person who gets bored easily, I would like to sell my first doll to discover more dolls. I feel that she holds me back a bit sometimes, and I need the money I can get from selling her for another doll.
Though, whoever were to buy my doll, I'd very much like to keep in contact with them, and see my doll every so often :]

    20. I sold my first doll because of two reasons:

      1. I had settled on a doll because I thought it was a deal and I would like it, but it turns out that settling is never what you should do. With all the dolls out there, and all the buying and selling, eventually you will find a sculpt you fell for regardless of price, at a price you can afford.

      2. 1/3 dolls are HUGE! It was 2/3rds of my size, so my fear of dolls kicked in and I turned right around, packed them back into the box, and sold them right off.

Now I've got a cute tiny I fell in love with, and I'm very happy now. :D
