Selling Dolls: Why?

Nov 26, 2012

    1. I most likely won't ever sell a full doll but would sell the head or body of a new doll because I have hybrid plans for the other parts.

    2. I've had different reasons over the years for selling. At one point I just had too many and needed to simplify. There have been a few dolls where they just weren't what I wanted them to be, or after some time, I didn't feel like doing anything with them. Further, I have tried to take on a few project dolls where I just lost interest in completing the project. Sometimes I have sold them for money, either for a real life thing, or for a doll, because I went for a long time of not putting much new money into the hobby, so if I wanted a new doll, one had to go.

    3. I'm sure I'm repeating what was stated prior in more eloquent terms, but, eh, whatever.

I've been officially in the hobby for a year. I've had dolls for half of that. My second doll, my SD, was bought at a convention that happened to be held in the hotel we were staying in for another convention. She was bought on impulse, as I hadn't had my first doll with me and I fell in love with her and there was like five minutes left before the hall closed.
I don't regret it. She was a great first SD, and helped cement in that I may or may not prefer SDs to MSDs. But, after that first few months, I didn't seem to love her as much as I did at first. She was clunky, awkwardly jointed, and I wanted a doll I could carry around with me for therapeutic reasons. Resin didn't suit my needs; and what I don't need, someone else could more.

So I'm selling her. I'd prefer to have the money for another doll; and if she doesn't sell, by some feasible option, I'll ask a friend if he wants her. So, TLDR: If I don't love her enough, then someone else could, and that's reason enough for me to move on.

    4. I don't own a single doll I would sell unless it was a financial emergency, and in that case I would only sell to a friend who would let me buy back later and keep the doll like collateral. I don't get dolls on impulse though, I agonize over which ones to get and make sure I'm absolutely in love first!

    5. If I place a doll up for sale it's due to one of two reasons. Either I don't take the doll out enough and it sits in its box for an extended period of time (~1 year or so). At this point I seriously think about either changing the doll so I enjoy it, or sell it. If I don't think there's anything more I can do with it, it's time to let it go. The second reason would be that I need or want something else more than that doll and need the money from it to help with the purchase.

    6. I sell them mostly because I'm in bad financial situation. But more importantly, I could not bond well with them and they deserve to go to someone who will loves them more than me.

    7. i have only sold one doll so far and that was because no matter what i did i just could not bond with him,
he was an msd size doll and the whole of my collection(except my first doll and one yo-sd) are SD size most being 65cm
so he was an entirely different size and it just wasn't working, but each time i went to start the sales page for him i kept stopping myself,
with the question Do i really want to sell him?? would i be happier without him?, and i continued to talk myself out of selling him(heck i even made him a hybrid for a while with my first dolls head on his body) until i was browsing the marketplace and saw a wanted ad for a souldoll joelle.d and they where in the same country as me so i contacted them and sold him to them.
i don't regret it, because he is now in a home where he will be appreciated and played with. instead of just standing around looking out of place.
i don't think i would sell any of the doll's i currently own unless i truly needed to

    8. The main reason I've sold dolls is because I didn't bond with them. Now it's because I'm leaving the hobby. I prefer to look at other people's dolls rather than own my own.

    9. I still have my first doll, I don't think I can ever part with her.
I sold my second doll, partly because I wanted the money to buy other things, and partly because I fell out of love with her. I didn't know where I was heading in terms of her personality and character. I didn't feel motivated to make things for her or take pictures of her after a while. And there were other dolls out there that I wanted more.

    10. I've sold my dolls for two reasons:

      1.) I needed the money.
2.) I fell out of love with the sculpt & wanted something different.

    11. I have only sold one doll (my first doll, actually) and it was because I didn't bonded with the sculpt at all. It also didn't fit the character she was intended to be, so I had no use for her. It was kind of sad, but I don't regret it.

    12. I've been in the hobby for 10 years now, and all the dolls I've sold (don't know exact figures, but let's say around 10 or so) have pretty much been for the simple reason that I haven't liked them for one reason or another. (Didn't like the body, too big, completely failed to settle on a look for them...)

Now though, the ones I've got on the marketplace are because I genuinely feel sorry for them and would love for them to go to a new home where they could once again be appreciated. If I'm stuck with them then so be it - but they'll just sit there having nothing done to them... and, well, that's kind of sad!

    13. Recently I sold a full doll for the first time. I really liked her but the YoSD size wasn't for me. Plus, she did come to me unplanned - I got her in a raffle at a convention last year. So while I really liked her, I hadn't really planned anything out for her or given her a character to get attached to. I only own Minis right now and they just grab my attention a lot more - like, I notice them, want to pick them up, hang out with them, change their clothes etc. But with my Yo she would just kinda sit there. She was really cute and I had a blast customizing her, though! I also wanted to make sure she went to a good home, and I found a really nice buyer who really likes her and even likes the face-up I did on her (I'm pretty amateur :XD:)! So it made me happy.
As I said I wasn't into the size, and she was unplanned, but the reason I finally made the move was that I wanted to buy another doll head off the MP. I didn't even end up doing it, though, I just put the money toward an existing layaway, which I guess might have been more responsible? lol. Anyway I also considered selling one of my dolls who I've got right now, mainly because of his posing. He is so difficult to work with, and furthermore hard to find clothes for! But I really like his character so I think he stays :thumbup

    14. Sometimes they don't work out. We buy them from pictures and they can look different IRL. Or they do work out and years later your tastes change, or a sculpt comes out that's even better for an existing character.

    15. I feel like I can't settle.... I want to sell everything and start it afresh, but all my dolls are "on its way". I don't even physically own one, yet I want to sell everything to start over.

    16. I'd only sell if a bad memory was attached to that particular doll.

I have never actually sold a doll, but I traded one once because I couldn't bond with it. It really wasn't the doll's fault, it was a gift from a boyfriend and we didn't work out. Funny enough, the doll I got in the trade is one of my favorites and I'm seriously considering rebuying the sculpt I traded. With all the money issues I've had, I have never once considered selling a doll. I'm emotionally attached to those lol Kidneys? Sure, take my kidneys, I'm only a little attached to those. :aeyepop:

    17. Im selling mines cause she just doesnt fit in the character anymore and i came to the conclusion that female dolls arent my thing to work with. I mean i love watching them and admiring their beauty but they are just not my thing. Sometimes you sell your dolls in order to either resell them or to get money to work on another doll plan. Depends on the owners thoughts ofcourse.

    18. For me space is a big issue
If i have all the space i need for all the things i like i would keep everything. However i have a wide ranges of interest and hobbies so i have to decide what important to me the most and keep those.
I have a few BJDs at home sadly i don't play with them as much as i should. I just decided to sell some of them that i don't play with a lot ot not really feel connected. I feel like it better for the doll to be with a new owner that will take care of them and play with them, not just let them rot in the boxes like i do.

I also did sell the doll right after i received it too if i don't like it i would try to re-home it as soon as i can because i will get lazy and it will be in the box and never get to come out until i do my house cleaning.

    19. I'm trying to sell a couple of my dolls right now. The reasons being a combination of that I haven't really bonded with them and that they no longer "fit" into my collection. I had characters that I wanted to shell, but unfortunately, when I finally got the dolls, neither of them really clicked with me. I felt like all they do is just sit around, and I don't do anything with them because I'm not inspired. So, instead of just keeping them around in their boxes, I've decided to sell them. Hopefully, they can be someone else's muse.
