1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Selling your collection

Jun 23, 2014

    1. I tend to keep the majority of the dolls that I buy these days, but there have been times in the past when I've gone through my collection and "culled the herd" pretty extensively...

When I decided I didn't like the way that CP's white resin aged, for instance, I ended up selling off about half of the dolls I owned at that time. I only kept a few of my white Delfs; dolls that I was particularly attached too. I've never had any regrets about the others, since the sculpts that I liked most I re-acquired in Normal resin. I've also gotten rid of many of my large Soom dolls over the last year or two, as I've come to realize that I really do prefer a more stylized, more "old school" aesthetic for my crew. (Soom's SGs are very pretty dolls, don't get me wrong there, but many of them just don't fit in very well with a bunch of anime-esque "classic" Delfs and Volks sculpts to my eye. ) Again, I only kept those few SGs I was most attached to, and haven't missed the rest.

All that said, I'm a *collector*, and so I approach my dolls with a somewhat different mind-set than the people who see them as inanimate children or little resin BFFs. I don't believe in dolly souls or in "bonding". I do think that as we age in the hobby, as we gain more experience and are exposed to many different styles and many different companies, we all undergo an evolution. We discover our personal preferences and our own sense of style where our dolls are concerned, and our tastes may change radically over time.... Given that, there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with our dolls changing as we do. Refinement and refocusing are a natural and healthy part of maintaining any collection, rather it's dolls, postage stamps, modern art or soda cans.

If you love a particular doll, by all means keep it... even if it doesn't match the direction your collection as a whole is moving, as long as it's important to you, that's what matters. But don't hang on to dolls you've come not to like just because "They were my first and if I don't keep them people will say I'm heartless!" or "If I sell this, The Community will think I'm awful!" Your collection is your own. Build and maintain it to YOUR satisfaction. It doesn't matter what the peanut gallery thinks... They're not footing the bills. They're not the ones who are there every day, looking at the dolls. They don't get to dictate what's best for your collection. You're the only one who gets to do that.

    2. I have sold several of mine with no regrets. I sold the first three I bought when I really didn't know that much about bjds and just bought them as I thought they looked nice. Once I learned more and decided to shell some of my original OCs and non original characters that I love those ones became much more important to me. I am currently selling three others to fund more things I want to do with my favorites. There are some I don't think I could ever sell though as i'm very attached to them. I also realized that I have a size preference for 65cm or larger so I am selling my msds.

    3. I would sell any of my dolls if I had a real life issue that required that kind of money.
But I plan financially so I don't think it would ever happen.

I have a Volks SD Sara that I'm conflicted about because I don't like that size of doll but it was my first BJD and it was also a gift...
So I don't think I can sell it for emotional reasons :S

    4. I have a hard time giving up ANYTHING! I have a lot of things from my childhood still so..I can only imagine I couldn't sell my dolls unless I really, really had to.

    5. I wouldn't sell my current dolls. They are ones that I've thought of and yearned for so long to just pass-along to a new owner.

    6. Until now, I still get in my mind that I never sell or trade my doll. Even if we have no more connected, they was with me in a long time and I don't want to sell what I was put my heart into.
Actually, i'm just a newcomer so can't sure anything. But I never sold anything until now (include my orther collection bout figures) :))

    7. Not at all, unless things start to get really serious financially. I'm a proud resin hoarder ;)

    8. Although I sometimes feel I would like to get prettier sculpts for my dolls, I don't think I could ever sell them. They've grown on me. Even the dolls that frustrate me the most being either bad at posing or not fitting any clothes available, I can't get my heart to selling them. They all became a lovable character I worked on very hard and for a very long time (and they kinda became my steady crew ^_^ ). And even now that I feel my collection is complete and there are lots of sculpts I would have rather had, I remember why I got my dolls in the first place and that I also loved their sculpts very much too or bought them because of specific reasons.

I think the only way I could sell my dolls is because I would need money. And even then I would see what other stuff I could sell first. But I can understand other people see this the other way and rather make room/money for new dollies when the older don't appeal to them anymore. Since I kinda do this with other items of mine.

I think this really, as can be read here, is a very personal question and each person will deal with this differently according how they see/use their dolls.
