Several Heads for One Doll?

Jul 31, 2009

    1. Faceplates do sound like a better idea then multiple heads but it'll probably take me time to adjust to the idea of a faceplate (there's just something about them. . .). I can see people's dislike of going through the process of unhooking the feet to get to the head - I've been making t-shirts for my girl and trying to get the head off so I can try the shirts on can be a pain :sweat

    2. I was wondering about this. I tend to err on the side of having more dolls, rather than less. I think I would probably end up buying a second body, also, in the end.
I probably should just go ahead and buy two bodies from the start, and have the twins, and use them as one in photo shoots, if I like, or interchange them as two people as well--that way I could have the option of having one or two dolls and have the choice. (I know I'll end up wanting a second body, so I should probably just plan on buying the full doll anyway!) :doh

    3. I have a plan for one of my dolls to have multiple personalities, which means I need two separate heads. Don't know if I'll ever get it completed though. I did try it with my Heliot, but the open eyed and romantic heads were just too different for me to feel like they worked right as the same character.

I do have a lot of twins though. I love getting multiples of the same sculpt (or open and dreaming versions) and bringing out different looks with them.

    4. I'm planning on having three heads for one of my characters. Either three of the same head (with different blushing) or three different heads (with similar blushing).

That one character needs to be able to look like a naive young girl, a nervous young adult, and a confident older aristocrat. I don't think I could encompass all that in one head (without relying on trick angles, which would become obvious over a large series of photos).

I plan on having a lot of bodiless heads, so I'm not worried that a couple of extra ones will annoy me too much. I'm only planning on having four bodies (two of each skin colour and two of each gender), so most of my heads (and extra parts) are going to live in a custom-made cupboard most of the time anyway.

    5. Originally I had thought that was what I would do. Buy one doll then later buy some heads.

Then you realized that your doll needs someone to interact with besides you and besids a head lol.. So then you have to get another doll..

    6. I like the idea of different faceplates for sleeping. I do not have one for my PukiPuki. I do like changing wigs!

    7. I had this thought as well when I first got into the hobby, but it just doesn't work for me. I found out that I intensely dislike having bodiless heads floating around. Plus, the extra heads tend to develop into their own, separate characters over time, who then need their own bodies.

    8. I have tried this and it worked out quite well, I had two heads that shared the same body, but they have different personalities. It's just that I dont want another body, and I thought the idea of them sharing a body is quite good, if I want to see one of them, I would change the heads.
But it was impossible to have those two boys taking photos together though, that is a pity.

    9. I think it would only work temporarily with me--eventually, I'll be itching to get the floating heads their own bodies since they will develop their individual personalities and characters. Besides, it feels much more natural to have a number of dolls than just one complete doll having to share its body with numerous floating heads *_*

    10. I like having multiple heads for each doll, and if I have a doll with an open-eyed head - Roda, Onyx, Ashley - I try to get the dreaming version as well. If I started with a dreaming head, like my Gomi Doll Igon however, I don't usually go for the open-eyed version because the narrow eyes are sort of his baseline expression and he would just seem horribly surprised with wider eyes.
All of my dolls are characters, so the specific face-ups don't really define who they are. I started out painting both heads exactly the same way so that they could seamlessly shift expressions midway through a photoshoot, but now I find that a bit boring and I'm leaning toward trying different make-up styles on the girls' alternate heads. That way, as was mentioned earlier, I don't have to wipe one face-up in order to have another. :)
Recently I have taken this whole thing one step further and now I have two totally different heads for the same character. I didn't want to replace my Delf Dreaming Shiwoo, but I also wanted to use my Volks Johanna head for the same boy. So now he has an open-eyed head that's a different sculpt entirely, which gets confusing when trying to define exactly what kind of doll I have. :sweat

    11. I do like the look of sleeping heads and dreaming heads.. But i usually go for one head or the other. I found that when i had a puki pongpong.. I had the sleeping faceplate too.. and i ended up selling it because i never used it. i sometimes find it a hassle switching heads or face plates.. =/

    12. I totally intend on doing this for my next doll. I'll keep her head she comes with, which has a lovely faceup for everyday...but she's the lead singer of a band that edges on shock rock, so I want her to have a head for her stage makeup too ^-^

    13. I was/am actually thinking of doing this with the 1/4 dolls I get (for some reason I don't mind buying whole 1/3 dolls, which are more expensive, but I guess with 1/3 dolls I like them to stay in a set look/character). Mainly because I'd be interested in having some of the different heads and trying out some different faceups, but I don't want to go and buy a whole doll/body for each one. So I hope to have what I might call a blank male doll and a blank female that can mix and match as much as they like :)

Who knows though, I might change my mind when I start doing this and end up getting bodies for the various heads anyway.
