Sex and Nudity within the BJD Community

Oct 18, 2007

    1. Hmm, while I don't have any issues with sexual content, when it starts to involve dolls it gets a litle creepy for me. The idea of someone stripping a inanimate doll and carefully placing it on top of another and posing them oh so carefully before snapping photos is somewhat weird and humorous to me, especially with the Unoa types with the working genitals. Resin porn squicks me the same as loli/shota, furry, etc. If it's not a living breathing human it just weirds me out. Then again I have my own weird interests that others could find distasteful, so I generally leave people alone who are into that sort of thing and let it be.

I think that the XXX dolls and huge bust sizes definitely contribute to some of the negative image that bjds have. The dolls can be creepy to people outside of the hobby as it is, so adding soft breasts and movable penises doesn't really help for the collectors who aren't into that sort of thing. It's the same for people who draw anthro and get labeled as a perverted furry. People are always going to make assumptions right off the bat. However for the anatomically correct dolls, I really see no issue. Nudity is fine, and some of the doll companies are just going for realism. It's when it gets sexual that things start to creep me out.

As far as cultural differences, to each their own. People are free to like or dislike sex all they want. But when sex involves lifeless dolls, I think the border starts to get a little blurry. As much as I dislike being called a prude for not having interest in dolly porn, I do realize that sex exists. I just prefer human sex.

People having boyfriend/girlfriend dolls just sitting together or holding hands actually appeals to me because I find it sweet. Likewise, dolls don't need to have a partner either. They're just dolls. No matter what you stick them together with they'll never love or have any real passion. However, all of this is merely my own personal opinions on the matter. I know many other doll owners feel very strongly about their dolls, and I leave them to their own devices. As long as they're happy, it's cool with me.

    2. Everyone has great points on here, I agree that most sexual dolly images disturb folks who are unused to dolls. I used to be slightly weirded out with my friend's photo stories. However, the more I got to know my friend's dolls, the more character and personality took over the "weird doll sex" feeling I had at first. I guess it's mostly a matter of misunderstanding.

I wonder if life-sized Smex dolls they use in Japan are involved in this in any way? Those are also human-looking, but still stylized enough to look like dolls.

    3. What is even WITH the "weird doll sex" thing? In school we did a group report (on.. I forget what) and one girl found Enchanted Dolls (who are usually naked and always anatomically detailed) and showed the rest of our group and they were all like "eew that's creepy" but, uh, it's art school, and people DRAW nude and sexual pictures all the time. And there are nude sculptures everywhere too and nobody even cares. So what's so different when it's a doll?

    4. ^ That. I don't see the difference either. I do a fair amount of "adult" art and stories, so why would this be different because there's a couple of dolls involved?

I have one-half of an intended couple in my possession. When the other half the couple is acquired, if they end up posed "doing things" slightly off camera, what's the problem? Neither them are child-age nor are they of a size to be mistaken for child-age dolls.

    5. With dolls I take the same approach that I have for humans. Artistic nudity isn't something that bothers me. However seeing images of intercourse (unless it's heavily implied and not necessarily show, aka above the waist shots) is not something I am interested in. It's a personal preference.

I don't think people are used to, or comfortable with, seeing something socially considered to be an object of nurturing and innocence, made to be sexual.
A 'doll' is something most people associate with little girls, to see one anatomically correct, nude and sexualized can be shocking and "creepy" to people not used to it.

    6. I don't really see what there is to discuss, people buy dolls and do whatever they want with them as is their right. I don't want to see their bondage/rape/torture images but that doesn't mean they don't have the right to create whatever art they want with their purchases.

    7. I personally believe that there's nothing wrong with sex and nudity within the BJD world; thats part of the creativity within this world. I want my girl to have big boobs but because I'm following the character build I created for her. It come down to what's comfortable for you. To each their own.

    8. I find nudity beautiful. Just yesterday my best friend and I were talking about how doll nudity is just as beautiful as human nudity because they are made to look alike.
I think it is stupid for someone from the outside community to come barging in on our community calling our dolls weird, when in all reality, they themselves probably have a weird fetish that no body knows about. [Feet, anyone?] IMO.
And I don't mind the bondage images and whatnot. Everyone is into their own thing. Everyone is unique. Everyone has a right to do what they want with their dolls that they spent a shizzload of money on.

People can just deal with what we like verses what they like.

    9. •I think that if it's in good taste, then go for it. I've seen a few photostories that have implied sexual content, and it was done so well that it didn't feel dirty, crude, or obnoxious. It had to deal with the character's story and personality, and I am big on storylines and character development. On the question about the photographer, I think it depends. Someone who buys their dolls just for that reason maybe perverted, but that person spent the money on them...so I think what they do with their things is up to them. The same goes for someone who does it as a form of artistic expression and such. When it comes to rape and abuse...I personally would be against that, but looking at it from the outside, how was it done and did it have anything to do with explaining something about a character, story, etc? Was it just for a photo shoot? As I said before, I wouldn't want to see such things in any way, shape, or form, but to each his own I guess.

•I feel that people from outside the community either a) don't understand the dolls, period, or b) are uneducated in them. There is a difference between barbies, pullips, action figures, and so on...just as their are different brands and designers of clothing and so forth. What someone does with their doll is up to them, but just because one person uses it one way, don't expect someone else to do the same. Using your example, one person may have their Unoa as an angel, another may be a famous hentai artist modeling their version for other purposes, this person has their Unoa because it reminds them of someone special...just because someone has a certain BJD modeled a certain way doesn't mean that everyone with that same doll should be modeled the same way. I think people who are negative to BJDs have their own reasons, just as someone who doesn't like music or video games have theirs. Still, what gives a person the right to be rude about it? "One man's trash is another man's treasure..."

•I think so. To each his or her own, I suppose. I'd rather not go into this topic, as everyone has their own opinions, and it would be a perfect world if everyone accepted the other opinions of people.

•Again, it's a lack of understanding BJDs. A guy can love porn, but if he sees his girlfriend posing her dolls in a similar way for a photoshoot, he freaks out (but that's not to say every guy does). One reason could be because he just doesn't like dolls, and another could be that he feels posing objects in a human-way is odd. While the girlfriend might be offended by it, he still has a right to feel that way. However, I feel in that situation he should explain it like this: "I have no problem with your hobbies, but this makes me feel a little uncomfortable. I'm really sorry I feel this way, but would you mind doing it later?" It shows that he is being respectful, and is telling you how he feels. Something he should NOT say because it is offensive is this: "Dolls are freaky and you are seriously scaring me for doing that to your dolls." The girlfriend then has a right to feel upset herself, as it seems like he is saying there is something wrong with her for doing it. That is just my example, and irl it could be vise-versa, friend-to-friend, and so on. But what I person chooses to do is his or her right. 'If you can't say something nice (or productive and/or respectful), then don't say anything at all.'

If someone wants to photograph a naked Barbie, then whatever. I don't think a child should see it if it is posed sexually, but a Barbie owner can do whatever they want with it just like a BJD owner can. I mean it's acceptable and funny for some people to see animals mating, but those same people might find doll nudity offensive. It's just a matter of personal preference, and doll nudity does not bother me at all. I was the little kid who had naked Barbie dolls and action figures all over the place!

•It's your doll, if you want it to have a partner, then go for it! As I've said before, I am all for character development and storyline and if that's part of it, then great! For me, I haven't come across that yet, but I don't know how I'll feel about it in the future. I am also a supporter of love, so same sex couples and such don't bother me at all.

      ----
I also agree with pretty much everything Manachann, nk-chan, bluejedi81, and Minerva have had to say.
Though I've been thinking, and maybe people who don't understand the vivid details we give our ball-jointed dolls has to do with the innocence and light topics given to their old Barbies, plushies, and action figures. Maybe they just can't wrap their heads around dolls having a bipolar disorder because their old dolls were just perfect and only talked about what they wanted to wear. I also think it's a lack of imagination, and also a want to fit in with "the regular crowd." I posted on facebook how I have an expensive hobby, and one girl who hasn't really talked to me in years wanted to know what it was. When I told her, I never got a response back. Which was 100% fine, since she and I have nothing in common, and her opinion means nothing to me. What she does is her thing, what I do is mine. Atleast I am proud of what I spend my money on and my hobbies.

I also just wanted to add that I had an ex who was actually afraid of my BJDs, but he was nice about it and explained it to me. He was allowed to watch Chucky at a very, very young age...and when it scared him, his older sister found it funny and would scare him with her dolls. Now she was still young, too, and probably had no idea how it would still affect him in the future. I respected his feelings, and never had Nicola in an odd or realistic position when he came over. Usually she would be just sitting there, and eventually she never bothered him anymore. I realize that it's a little off-topic, but if someone grew up having a similar event happen to them, again...I can understand why it would freak someone out.

    10. · What are your thoughts on BJD photography showing scenes of a sexual nature or implying sexual content? Do you think that people who photograph their dolls having sexual intercourse is considered to be perverted or an expression of artistic form and love? What about if the sexual scenes are of a form of rape or abuse? Should people be allowed to photograph such scenes (photographs of this content are not allowed on DOA)
      - I don't like it basically, really. Couse i really think that one of a 1000 persons can shows these scenes beautiful and sensual + have good quality of photos + have an idea of photos. Just shows how dolls having sex is boring. But i'm not a doctor, i can't think tese persons having sexual intercourse or not.

      · How do you feel when BJD's are reffered to as being "Sex Dolls" by people from outside the community? Do you believe it's wrong for them to think such things when there are dolls such as "Full nobility royma" avaliable? What about Unoa dolls being created by a famous hentai artist? Mods such as the XXXL Dollfie Dream bust? The fact BJD's are often anatomically correct? Are all these aspects which contribute to people having a negative image about BJDs?
      - Oh i hate to hear it about 'sex dolls'. I can't understand these XXXL bust, but somethimes it looks good but it consist from a character of doll. Anyway, i don't think that BJD are 'sex dolls' and don't believe in it. Couse it offends my sense of beauty in somewhat xD

      · What about the differences in culture between doll owners. Whilst one person may have come from a society where nudity and sex are considered to be beautifull things, another may have come from a society where such subjects are considered unacceptable. Is the cultural barrier something that changes peoples opinions on sexual content in doll photography?
      - No, i really think that it not connect with cultural barrier. I just think that even a sexual scenes can be showing beautiful. + my answer on the first question.

      · With so many nude photographs of real women and men out there in the world, why should photographing inanimate objects that portray similar statue to human beings be considered wrong? Would it be acceptable for someone to photograph a naked Barbie over a naked BJD? How do you handle just plain doll nudity in photographs?
      - Just a few words - I don't like nude in whole. Couse only one of a 1000 really make nude art, other 999 just take photos of naked women. The same is about BJD.

      · What about the need to find a romantic partner for your BJD? Whether or not they choose to engage in sexual activities or pose nude for photoshoots. Do dolls really need to have a girlfriend/boyfriend? What about same sex couples? Is it frowned upon to do such things seeing as they are "just dolls"?
      - Yeah, my dolls need, but i won't take photos how they're having sex xD Feel the different.

My professor once said if you think about it, if your parents weren't doing it on the exact day, time, and moment that they did, you would not be here.

I would like it to be properly labeled, for one. I'd also want to have a little disclaimer telling the viewer what will be going on. I don't think it's perverted to have someone's doll couple copulating, but I would like to be warned that that will come up. I would think it a little... odd if that is all someone did with their dolls, and I'd probably stay away from them in real life.

As to the abuse, if you can mention abuse once in a discussion between two characters, and not show it, please do. Unless you see some really important reason, I don't think it has to be done. There's nothing illegal about it, but I don't know if many people would want to have to scroll through pictures of that nature...

I'm really tired of this misconception. I just don't see how someone can see a 2ft tall, little doll being used for anything nefarious. I just don't.

      · What about the differences in culture between doll owners. Whilst one person may have come from a society where nudity and sex are considered to be beautiful things, another may have come from a society where such subjects are considered unacceptable. Is the cultural barrier something that changes peoples opinions on sexual content in doll photography?
Gotta point one thing out: no culture is set in stone, and no one culture has every member believing every belief about said culture. Personally, I'm more of a modesty fan when it comes to dressing my dolls. Skirts need to be at least knee-length, nothing too revealing; no neckline too low. I know I'm not doing anything to single-handedly change people's misconceptions, but it makes me feel better.

As to the nude art, I think most people can appreciate a good amount of art, even if the individual in it is nude; but if someone is not comfortable with it - which I can understand - they don't have to look at it if they run into it. They don't have to buy it and hang it in their walls. I don't think they'd impose their beliefs onto other people, and people who are OK with nude art should not try to push their beliefs onto them.

Would it be acceptable for someone to photograph a naked Barbie over a naked BJD? How do you handle just plain doll nudity in photographs?

These dolls are modeled to look like humans - stylized humans, but still. I've seen people do incredible - and incredibly strange - things in how they portray Barbie in art. I think photographing a nude Barbie might be for more comical reasons because of all the animosity surrounding what people believe she represents.

BJD nudes might seem more realistic, and the art can be seen in a more serious light. If someone wants to photograph their doll naked, go ahead. I won't be doing it, because I don't feel comfortable doing it, and I don't want to. I don't think I'd ever have a need to have to manage anything, except if there's something I don't see once the photo is taken.

Do dolls really need to have a girlfriend/boyfriend? What about same sex couples? Is it frowned upon to do such things seeing as they are "just dolls"?

Dolls can have a partner, or they can not have a partner. But they are 'just dolls', and I don't equate human issues with dolls. I don't look at our opinions on dolls, or themes in this hobby as a reflection on how we view actual people in the same situation. I don't want to see any photostories that are too explicit.
