Should you have a favourite doll?

Feb 2, 2014

    1. Well... since dolls aren't actual living beings, I think it is perfectly okay to have a favourite. None of them are going to hold it against you if you do.

I love all my dolls, but I do have a favourite. Tyler (Resinsoul Mai) will always be my favourite, no matter which other dolls enter my home. Tyler isn't my first doll. He isn't the prettiest or the best. He's just...Tyler. The reason he is my favourite is really because of the character he represents. This doll is the resin avatar of an original character of mine that has been with me for a long time, many years before I ever knew what BJDs even were. So, when I found this doll to be an avatar for him, the doll became very special to me as well.

I am finally getting my grail doll this year (after many years of admiring her from afar) but I think even she won't - can't - replace Tyler as my favourite.

    2. I don't think anyone should feel obligated to have a favorite of their group or feel guilty if they do. I've been in the hobby a long time and have many dolls, and there are some I like more than others for different reasons: their overall aesthetics, how I acquired them, or what they represent to me. Though I look at them all with fondness, there are some I feel greatly attached to. I'm okay with that, and since ultimately my dolls are possessions, they are too. ;)

    3. I feel like when I have all of the dolls I currently have planned, assuming that they'll be the only ones I'll have (haha, right), that each one will have a special kind of "favourite" perk attached to them:
Ardese is my first doll, so he's going to hold a lot of sentimentality, especially because I'm the kind of person to hold a lot of sentiment towards my first anything.
Merchant is going to be based off of one of my oldest characters that I've really loved in my teenage years, so seeing him finally put into a tangible form aside from sketches on paper, I feel I'm going to bond with him very quickly and strongly. He has a lot of connections with all of my close IRL friends as well.
Ollo is going to be based off of another older and loved character but he's also going to be my first attempt at a face-up and mod. If all goes well, I can see him meaning a lot to me because I'll be putting my own personal touch on him.

So I guess, if everything goes as planned, they'll all be my favourites, just each in their own way. :)

    4. Weird question... or maybe just phrased oddly. Not sure :) I know you said you were having a hard time expressing yourself with the question... happens to the best of us.

Ummm. I have 4 dolls right now and I have a favorite, hands down, no questions asked. Even my boyfriend can tell which is my favorite without asking or discussing dolls with me. It's my Minifee. She's my favorite because of how well she is built and she just has a beautiful face. And she's really really easy to find clothes for. The faces of my other dolls are just meh. They fit for their roles but I don't find their bodies, engineering, or their faces nearly as amazeballs as my Minifee.

A close 2nd place is my 66cm Akagi doll. His body is pretty awesome.

I don't think there's anything wrong with playing favorites. They're inanimate objects with no feelings. I -do- feel a bit bad that I have other dolls that I don't like nearly as much... as in, why did I spend money on a doll I don't like as much? Shouldn't I have saved up for "better" dolls? Well I still consider myself new to the hobby. I -really- don't know what I'm doing. I haven't seen any other BJDs in person. If I could go back in time and tell myself "Kittydorkdork, you love Fairyland dolls. A lot. Trust me on this one." maybe I'd have more Fairyland dolls instead. Or maybe not. Maybe it would have influenced my doll choices, and in turn my story ideas. Who knows. Alls I know is I have a favorite but I still love having my non-favorites and I don't plan on getting rid of/replacing them anytime soon.

    5. Hmm...pretty interesting question and I think I kind of understand what you mean. I mean, no one is obligated to have favourites/not have favourites, but I have a favourite for a different...more sentimental reason?

I have one doll that is the most special to me, because she's the one I bonded most with. And even though I have three girls with the same sculpt, that particular first one is the most special. In terms of sentimental meaning, it is the one I would want either my best friend or family to keep if anything every happens to me. Or it would be the one girl I would keep, if I had to sell everyone else because of some disastrous event that will cripple me financially. I hope that will never happen because I love my whole doll family, but I think it's something that can justify having a favourite? Though I don't personally think any justification is ever needed to have a favourite or choose not to of course :sweat

    6. I think it is okay to have a favorite doll. I do play favorites. Absolutely. I have a large collection, and I simply don't love all my dolls the same - though I love them all a lot (as those I fell out of love with have been rehomed). The favorite is not always the same doll - but it is usually one of a few chosen ones.

    7. I think its natural with collections to have a favourite. I have a favourite out of mine and she's quite new to the collection as well, but she's just so different and 'perfect' to any other I own. I really like all of my other dolls a lot but I'm very guilty of putting her on a bit of a pedastal...hope it doesn't give her a big head >,>

    8. I don't see why you couldn't have a favorite. Sometimes you bond more to one doll then another. Just because one if your favorite does not mean you do not love the other one too. I admit I have felt bad for favoring certain dolls but even at those times I'm aware of how silly it is.

    9. Should you? Maybe not, but I definitely do, I can't help it! Ante has always been my favorite sculpt of all time so mine is my favorite doll, hands down. I still really really love the others though.

    10. I love all my dolls but I do have a favorite, and as sad as it sounds, even in real life people have favorites with people like favorite brother/sister[the one you get along the best], favorite friend [the best friend] and even a favorite kid (my mom's favorite has always been the youngest one and my dad's favorite is the first one...I'm the middle one~.~ but I wasn't neglected or anything). When I have kids, I will try not to play favorites but when it comes to dolls...they're objects so it doesn't matter to me.^^

    11. I don't really see any issue with having a favorite doll. I don't have one doll I favor above the rest but I do have a favorite or two from each size range.

    12. You don´t háve to, but you could. There's no right or wrong, they're dolls and you got them for your amusement, if you have a favorite, that is fine and if you don't..then that is also fine! Maybe you just have a lot of favorites ;)

I do have a favorite doll, it's my first, my Chiwoo <3 I think it's because he's always been here, before I had any of the others, and because he is the most fun to dress and get new things for because everything looks good on him. Sure, after more than 8 years he's yellow as a banana, but I still think he's gorgeous and I still adore him more than my newer, fancier dolls, although of course I really like those as well.

    13. At any time in my collection I usually have a favourite doll.. the one I most like to dress or photograph or enjoy creating a story about. I don't see any reason why you "shouldn't" have a favourite. I do remember when I was a kid I always felt incredibly guilty if I had a favourite doll/stuffed toy/whatever - I always felt like I was neglecting the rest of them heh. I grew out of that as I grew up though :)

    14. I have two favorite dolls, my SwD Lucas and my Williams. If I ever had to sell my collection, I wouldn't want to part with those. To be honest, same goes for my Madoka.

All other dolls take turns. Sometimes I'm very partial to my Kamau, other times I want to do more with my Elfdoll K-ss. "

Don't worry about it. The main point about this hobby is to have fun! With or without favorites ;).

    15. If the question of this thread were "do you have a favourite doll", I would answer like this:
I don't have any real favourites amongst my Super Gem dolls - all of them have such different characters, that none of them really shine out as a 'favourite'. I go through phases where I'll spend more time working with different dolls (usually when I'm developing one character more, I'll have that doll out more often and for longer than the others, for example). But over the long term, I spend equal time on them all and pay equal attention to them all.

With my Rosettes, though, I totally play favourites. The Delilah sculpt is the reason I wanted to buy a Rosette, and so my Adelaide gets a lot more attention and love. While I love the Marguerite sculpt as well, I really only bought Sophie because I knew I wouldn't be able to enjoy Adelaide if she was my only MSD-sized doll. This favouritism might end up fading away if I get more Rosette dolls, though. I know I originally favoured my Nouva (a Soom Cuprit) over my other Super Gems, but that faded as I grew comfortable with my larger collection of characters.

If the question of this thread were "do you feel comfortable favouring one doll over all the rest", I would answer like this:
Not really. Favouring one doll over all the others makes me wonder whether buying the others was worthwhile. It's kind of like a vague buyer's remorse. Like, what's the point of spending $600+ on six dolls when I get half as much enjoyment out of all the dolls except one?

Luckily, I generally don't favour one doll over my others (even my poor Sophie still has a lovely character and gets a lot of attention, even when Adelaide overshadows her a bit), and so I don't have to feel that uncomfortable "why own so many dolls if I only REALLY like one?' feeling anymore

    16. I tend to play favourites with mine xD I don't think it's WRONG to do it, but I always feel bad. I know it's silly to feel bad since - as expressed in the other replies - dolls are inanimate, and don't have souls.

*whispers to dolls* No.. No of course you have souls... I was only saying it so they didn't all think I was weird...

      <.<

    17. My favorite changes all at time but I would have to say I probably cater more to my YOSD since she is a little easier to shop for and to carry around. She has the most accessories compared to the others as well.

    18. I don't have one favourite dolls - I have only one *ba-dum-tsh*
but seriously, I do not think that I would ever favor one over the other dolls, it's more matter of sentiment to older ones than those quite new in my home (wow, whole 2 weeks I had 2 doll at once so far xd)

    19. Should I have a favorite doll? Yes, I should, and I do! My first is still my favorite, even after almost ten years:

I have several family and age groups here at my house, and I do go from one group to another, writing and photographing different individual dolls and stories... but Hiro, my Volks Link, is never far from my mind. He is the one against whom all other BJDs are measured at my house. He's not perfect, but he's perfect for me. That's why I feel he deserves to be the favorite.

The others all know he's my favorite too, but they don't mind... because he often gets singled out for attention, and it isn't always favorable attention! He's fun to tease because he takes everything so seriously.

    20. Why not? It isn't exactly as if you could hurt the other dolls' feelings ... Mind you, I'd have a hard time picking a favourite if I had to think about it. If my room were on fire, however, I guess the one doll I'd grab to save (if there weren't enough time to save them all) would be Luken, my first doll ever. And I'd grab the Feanor-head, too.
