1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Smoke in your house with bjd?

Jan 2, 2005

    1. I never let any of my dolls near my father. He smokes a pipe and though he only ever does it outside, when he comes back inside any area of the house that he walks through will absolutely reek of pipe tobacco for a while. It's one of the few things about him that I don't miss when he goes on business trips.

    2. I have been a smoker for a long time. As much as I regret this decision, I do love my cigarettes.

I am curious how cigarette smoke can affect resin. Those of you who smoke around your BJDs, does it yellow them? Or cause other forms of damage? What are your experiences as a smoker with a doll?

Since I am with my first doll I have been extra cautious. I would like to be less cautious and relax with my doll.

Apologies if this topic is previously discussed. Please delete or remove however appropriate.

    3. I'm an ex-smoker but had stopped before I started in this hobby so I can't offer first-hand advice. This thread should help answer some of your questions.

Smoking in the home has also been mentioned in threads as one of the things people consider would lower the value of the doll. It's also usual if you are selling anything (clothes, wigs, etc.) that you mention if the item comes from a home where there is smoking or pets. As a smoker, you may not notice the smell on something you own, but a non-smoker, or someone with allergies, will definitely notice it.

And it's not only the smell. Having lived in a house where there were smokers, I well remember cleaning the walls that had turned yellow from smoke particles settling on it. I would imagine that smoke residue would also settle on a doll and eventually change its colour.

Edit: Tez beat me with the link :)

    4. Thank you both! I apparently did not search in the proper context :) I appreciate the comments.

    5. non only smoke with bjd in my house , i alway hate my friend smoke in front of me...i will ask then go outside and back

    6. We do not smoke and if friends visit us (the most don't smoke too) but when one smoke, they need to go out on the balcony ;)

    7. Same here. I'm an occasional pipe smoker, but I smoke outside on my balcony then come back in. My doll is going to be situated on a shelf in my room so I don't think it will cause many problems on the smell/smoke front.

    8. As others have said, smoking tends to stain dolls, usually a yellow colour, though a friend of mine had an Obitsu at one point who's bodied had these not so attractive grey blotches on her from her previous owner, who smoked.
Besides that, cigarette smoke just coats everything in a nasty smokey smell, including resin. I'm so sensitive to the stink that I actually have to cover my mouth and nose when someone's smoking nearby or I have horrible coughing fits(And I don't have asthma or any other respiratory problems, either). Makes me glad nobody in the house smokes anymore, for both my sake and my resin babies.

    9. I dont smoke but i have heard that smokes seeps into everything so i would say i wouldnt recommend smoking near the doll. when looking at smokers houses you can see yellowing in the ceiling from where they have sat and smoked.

    10. Fortunately the only smokers in our house are Indy and Senri and dollie smoke doesn't count does it?

    11. Sorry if this was discussed, and I know this is about cigarette smoke. However, would smoke from incense cause yellowing as well? I ask because I'm hoping to be getting my BJD soon and I am an avid incense user but will stop if it's going to change the color of my doll!

    12. I'm not sure if incense smoke will yellow a doll, but it will permeate wigs, clothing, and everything else with the smell. I bought a very expensive outfit from someone who was a non smoker but did burn incense all the time and didn't disclose that. I was pretty hacked off about it; the smell was so strong it burned my nose and I had to wash the outfit twice :(
Incense does leave behind a sticky resin when burned, so I imagine that stuff is coating your belongings as well. Might cause some discoloration with time.

    13. I never knew incense smoke could be that dangerous! I don't burn incense, but sometimes hookah is used in my house. It's not nearly as smelly as cigarettes, but still there is some smoke from coal and from exhaled air; is it also bad for dolls? I'm okay with the smell, a bit scared of yellowing if it's patchy (a whole evenly yellow doll is okay for me :) ).

    14. I noticed that since there is a BJD in the house, there is much less dust and much more fresh air! I am not planning on quitting smoking but the doll is in the box and the window open. Still I guess I will have to put him in a different room, as I am worried...

    15. ..Now I'm second guessing if I DO want to take Noah with me to see my dad who is a RAPID chain smoker. (He actually smoked around me and insisted on smoking in the same car as me even though I have asthma)

    16. No one smokes in my house, but we do burn incense a lot. Hmm..now I'm wondering if I should stop burning it in my bedroom. I should do a complete dust and wipe on my walls etc, and stop burning it in here for while to see if there is less dust or a noticeable change.

    17. I once bought a tiny tiny doll from a smoking house and she smelled horribly of smoke! I had to do all kinds of things to get rid of the smell. I was just glad that it was such a small doll, so I could put her in a box with a bunch of odor-killing solutions. A large doll would be a nightmare. As it was, it too AGES to get rid of the smell and it's not 100% gone, but I don't notice unless I've got my nose up close...

And, I'm not even that sensitive to the stink of cigarette smoke. My sense of smell isn't strong and I grew up in a smoker's house, although he mostly had to smoke outside the house. But seriously, the smell from this doll was almost making me sick!

      I don't think I'll ever buy a doll from a smoking household again...!!! *_*

    18. I thought that the cigarette would leave a smell, i did not know they affect yellowing,(learn something new everyday)

    19. I haven't gotten a doll yet but I'm going to very soon! I noticed someone in here said something along the lines of her parents saying that if she had a problem with their smoking in the house or something that she is welcome to move out. That's what I hear all of the time. My grandma has been a VERY heavy smoker since before I was born. She has always known that I hate the smell of cigarette smoke. The moment I get into the truck with her I pretend gag to make her immediately crack a window. I have asked politely many times over many years if she would quit. I've explained the hazards to her health as well as what the smoke can do to non smoker's health... but she just gets pissed off and tells me that I can get out. The walls in this house are supposed to be white but definitely aren't. Everything reeks of cigarette smoke. I always keep my bedroom door shut and the vents closed but I know the smoke is in here because my clothes can be just washed a day ago and reek of cigarette smoke. I went to stay with a friend of mine, last year, and her home is a nonsmoking home- The moment I stepped into their place I realized just how terrible I smelled. My suitcase, my CLEAN clothes, myself... It was so bad that I wanted to vomit. I was insanely embarrassed and apologized over and over again! My friend's mom kindly washed my clothes for me, when I'd asked.

A maneki-neko solar bobble-head thing of mine was stored in a box out in the open of my room. It was covered... When I'd put it in there it was white. Half a year later when I'd gotten it back out it was so badly yellow I wanted to cry. It was very important to me and then became trash.
I'm very scared about having a BJD now but I really want one. I've been wanting to get one for years now and have finally set aside some money for me. I'm, unfortunately, going to have to keep living here for a long time still so I don't want to wait until I move out to get a doll.

I was thinking I could just keep my doll wrapped up and placed in a small plastic tote only until I decided to take him somewhere. Would that, at all, help keep him from yellowing from Cigarette smoke?
