Smoke in your house with bjd?

Jan 2, 2005

    1. Since I live with my parents and my mom smokes in the house I leave my dolls in the boxes most of the time and take them out when I want to dress them or take pictures or play with them. I would hate for my dolls to be discoloured or smell like smoke.

    2. Elbow grease, patience, and sheer stubborness will get rid of anything. My aunt gave my brother and my sister in law her vintage record player dresser. Now, my aunt is a chain smoker and that thing had about 35+ years of nicotine and cigarette residue on it. It took two days of relentless scrubbing with apple vinegar, but eventually that thing looked brand new.

    3. I lived with a smoker years ago and everything takes on that horrid smell and i'm sure bjds would too. Now as I have my own home I have never let anyone smoke in it. If you want to smoke go outside. Apart from the smell there are the health risks.

    4. I don't smoke and actually I don't like the smell. I have once bought a second hand outfit for my doll and it was smelled so bad. (I guessed the owner must be a smoker or someone in her house smoked.) So I don't think I will let anyone smoke in my room or nearby when I hold my dolls. The smell is terrible and dangerous to the health.

    5. Besides no one is allowed to smoke in our house anyway it would be a bit of a nightmare to me if someone smoked in a room near my dolls... I would not even buy a used doll from a household where people smoke. I really can't stand the smell >___<

    6. I'm personally allergic to the smell/smoke, and just hate in general, so I would never let someone smoke in my house anyways, let alone near my doll. And like many people have already said, it will make your doll (and everything else) smell like smoke and will potentially stain your doll.

    7. I smoke in special room with ventilation. I think that smoke's harm is myth of "allergics". The moment killer of dolls is the sun and high temperature.

    8. I live in my own place and no one is allowed to smoke in here. Mainly because it stinks and the smell on cigarettes make me nauseous.

    9. So, this thread makes me want to ask this: Would candle smoke have the same effect? I'm planning on ordering the tiny in my sig soon, and my family likes to burn candles weekly. My room is roughly ~50ft away from the room where the candles are, but I'm worried this might affect my doll in a bad way.

    10. There isn't smaoking allowed in my house. I know it will have everything smelling like smoke.

    11. I'm also curious to know if Resin is particularly absorbant to odours, just in case I ever leave one of my dollies out on display. Nobody smokes in my house, but we do burn candles sometimes, and the cooking smells (curry, bbq) can get very strong.

    12. I do not smoke in my home, and do not allow any visitors to smoke in my home either. I've seen the damaging effects it has working with apartment rentals and I will keep my possessions as far away from cigarette (or cigar, etc) smoke as I can. As for candles, I've seen them leave a blackish grey tint on the walls and ceiling in the corner/area of the room it was burned in. If the candle isn't letting off a lot of blackish smoke, however, your things should be fine. I haven't seen candle smoke damage be as extreme as the damage that nicotine smoke can do and candles don't leave behind a nasty smell. Personally, I wouldn't buy a doll from someone who smoked inside their home.

One thing I would recommend if people are worried about candle smoke is to try a wax warmer or two in your home. They smell similar to a candle but don't smoke at all :)

    13. No, at that distance your dolls should be fine. Candle smoke is not full of the tars and toxins that burning tobacco product is. It's just carbon and paraffin/beeswax/soywax and a small amount of fragrance. Being in another room is quite enough to protect them from candle smoke.

    14. Oh, thank you so much! This makes me feel a lot better about ordering the doll.

    15. When ever there is smoking going on in my house I make sure my girl isn't around it, wether I put her on a different level of the house, wrap her up in a towel, or I put her in her sealed box. Is that still bad for her? I know that smoking around a doll is bad, but is she safe that way?

    16. I don't like the smell of smoke and I will not allow anyone to smoke inside the house. I know that smoke causes things to turn yellow and the scent sticks to everything. Fortunately, I haven't received anything that smelled like smoke because, I would most likely have to sell it or throw it out. The smell gives me a bad headache and sometimes nausea.

    17. I smoke and so does every one that lives in my house (yuck, I know) but I keep my window open and the fan going in that direction if I smoke in my room. And also, since I'm really paranoid about my girls getting any type of damage, they are completely wrapped in their box pillows, put in their plastic bags, and then sealed in their cases at all times and I wash my hands before handling them! The plastic, cheaper dolls are out in the open on my dresser though so I'm seriously considering quitting just to keep them in good condition or at least not smoking while I work in my room as much and just going on the back porch.

I actually did a butt load of research on how smoke affects BJDs when I got mine because I didn't really think about it and I'm glad I did- I don't want my girls going yellow or smelling funny!

    18. I have never smoked and my home is completely smoke free. It will leave a scent on clothing and likely the doll too. Whenever I have been around smoking friends my hair and clothing absolutely smells of it. I'm guessing inside a well sealed cabinet will be ok though.

    19. I would like to chime in here. I recently sold a doll that never had contact with smoke but who had contact with some doll items that had been washed several times that had contact with an smoker years ago and the smell traveled to the doll! Be very careful of the odor. I'm now going list the possibility of a smoke smell in my sales threads just because I don't want to inadvertently pull the wool over someones eyes :...(

    20. I'm so glad I found this thread. I recently quit smoking, and I thought my dolls wouldn't have that smell on them since I kept them in a plastic drawer set in my closet. I was wrong about that, cigarette smoke can go anywhere and my poor dolls really stink. You don't notice that awful smell when you're a smoker, but now it's enough to make me sick. Right now I have them in a plastic bin with a box of baking soda, and it's helping a little. I'm going to try some of the other suggestions here too. There's a cleaner I really love called Spray Power and it's the best for getting rid of that sticky yellow tar from your walls and furniture, but I wonder if it's safe to use on resin.
