Smoke in your house with bjd?

Jan 2, 2005

    1. I used to see auctions where people said "from a smoke free home" and used to think yeah right, it's like apples with the label 100% fat free, these people are just trying to make their products look better when they're not

then I got something from a smoking home and UGH it was disgusting. It was a serious turn off, A shame too because it was a book I really wanted to read but there was just no way. Ever tried getting smoke smell out of books? it's impossible

baking soda works and can be used on things you don't want t get wet. And good old fashioned fresh air does wonders. Vinyl is trickier I heard it absorbs smells forever (just think about all those cute strawberry and vanilla scented dolls when you were a kid) I'd think resin could fall into the absorbing smell category as it is a synthetic substance.. in my experience natural things refresh much more easily

    2. this should be made a sticky! It has a lot of really good tips! Some of the stories are horrible though (like recieving reeking things from Ebay.)

    3. Yep, there are horror stories about things bought from smokers all over. My tidbit of advise for buying off eBay is this--if the seller doesn't say whether or not it is from a smoker's home, ask them. If they won't give you a straight answer, walk on by. And don't trust photos!

Oh, and if you do smoke, and are selling something, go ahead and be honest about it.

For the smell, just airing things out has always worked best for me.

    4. I am so sorry if this was brought up earlier and/or somewhere around here as well.. I ran a search but couldn't find anything so..

My father smokes, pretty much actually.. and everywhere I read about that things come from a non-smoke homes and such. Now, my Alexander will be order in december, is it bad that there is smoke in the house? Is it bad for the doll? *_*

I have no idea about this and I need to be sure I guess. I don't think I could convince my father to smoke outside so I need to know this soon. :)

Thanks for your help in advance!

    5. The tar from cigarette smoke has a tendancy to stick to things and discolor them, as well as give them a very distict odor.

Regular cleaning will prevent your doll from being stained, and a vinegar soaking and a good airing out in clean air will remove the smell from any cloth or fiber.

    6. what im usually most concerned about with smoking homes is the smell. any smell can get into your doll, but smoke smell is usually pretty strong depending on how much there is. people from non-smoking home will usually notice it when they recive dolls from a smoking homes.

    7. Cigarette smoke will yellow a doll, the only way to keep them safe would be to keep them in some airtight container all the time, as smoke can travel in a house through vents and under closed doors. It's a good excuse to get someone to stop smoking.

    8. Omg.. Thanks for your advice but I'm completely traumatized now.. There is no way in hell that my father quits smoking. He smokes cigars, one a day or so..

I really want to bring Alexander downstairs or anything, but I am way to scared now. Since he's going to come in december, if I convince my father to smoke outside, will the smoke and tar be completely non-existend in our home?

    9. when my dad started smoking outside, it made our house smell so much better. of course it won't take it out completly (ie. it can come in through doors or follow him back in) but it will reduce it.

    10. Cigar smoking is a bit different than cigarette smoking. Espcially since one tends to not smoke cigars as often as cigarettes. I think that storing him in an airtight container will be okay. Like one of those plastic tubs? Are those airtight?

We smoke outside, and my non-smoker friends haven't complained about the smell, and neither of my dolls have yellowed or smell of it. If you can convince your father to smoke outside, you will be fine.

    11. So that is better for the doll? Will he go completely yellow or anything? I am insanely scared now. My room is in the attic, so I can just leave him there sitting right? *I am so sorry if I sound paranoid now.. I just am I guess*

I really want to bring him downstairs.. just to sit on the couch or anything..

Edit: I don't get it about those airtightthings.. I mean.. I want to bring him out of the box, not in.. 0.0

    12. Smoke permeates everything that is not completely sealed. Even if he smoked in the basement it would still reach you in the attic. When you're not playing with your doll, and your dad is smoking in the house, keep him in an airtight container.

    13. Don't worry too much, just don't leave your doll out when your dad is smoking and your doll should be fine. Obviously smoke is bad for resin, but if you do what you can to limit exposure it shouldn't be a big concern.

however,if the smoke in your house was so bad that you got ear infections from it then I would be extremely careful about getting your doll out.

    14. Once nicotine gets on your doll, I don't fancy your chances of removing it. It can be quite difficult to remove and resin being porous I think it might absorb it and never come out.

I smoke and have dolls. I only get my dolls out of the boxes to play with them/photograph them. They are in their boxes in a closed room away from the smoke. I will also say the room they are in has not been affected by the smoke, so the closed door has worked fine. I also only smoke in one room in the house (door shut, windows open).

Don't panic, just don't keep your dolls where the smoke is.

    15. well... i have wondered about this too. i've stopped smoking cigarettes with my doll, although i only smoke outdoors. but what about just regular incense smoke? we light incense in our house every once in a while when the indoor air kinda stale, or after cooking especially aromatic dishes. does that damage your bjd too? what about OTHER (not cigarettes, not cigars) unmentionable smokables? hippies, you know what i mean! :wiggle is it smoke in general that trully damages or is it nicotine &/ tar?

    16. Having lived with smokers all of my life, I can say that it is quite possible to clean nicotiene stains. It does take a little elbow grease, and perseverence, but they can be lifted from even pourous surfaces.

The key is to clean often. The more often you clean, the less film there is, and the easier it will be to clean. The yellow build-up of years of layers of nicotiene and tar is what's really hard to remove.

The smell and stain will even come out of cloth, with the proper cleaning methods.

    17. Hm.. thanks about the advice, and I also wonder about the incense since I light that sometimes as well.

I still don't get those aircontainterthings, but I don't think it will be much of a problem anymore since I had a talk with my dad just now, and he agreed to smoke outside waaay back in the garden. *he was apparantly already thinking of quitting and he said "so now I have a reason to quit"*

    18. My parents, brother and one sister smoke. Unfortunately, it's something I've just had to deal with all of my life.

As such - my bedroom is smoke free. I know smoke can get everywhere, but it's the most smoke-free place in the house. I can't really do any better than that.

There is no smell of smoke in my room, and nothing yellows, so. C:

Although I do burn a lot of incense. XD Mainly sticks rather than oil (though oil too sometimes), and it shouldn't do any damage as it doesn't contain harmful things like nicotene or tar. Smells damn good, though.

    19. I have been in a number of places where incense is on allot and never seen any discoloring to any items in the room including white silk. I don't think incense will discolor unless you literally hold it under or right next to your doll for long periods.

    20. that's such good news your doll is going to help your dad's health!
