Smoke in your house with bjd?

Jan 2, 2005

    1. I am an infrequent smoker, and I think so long as you're a fair distance from the dolls, they're okay. I usually try to be outside or by a window, and my dad only smokes outside or in the basement. So long as the room the BJDs are in is smokefree, I wouldn't worry about it too much. In my room, I have been lighting incense for years, and candles, and those things have never damaged my dolls at all, either.

    2. My Dad does too; it's utterly infuriating. Mostly because both my Mum and I are asthmatics and I suffered bronchitus last winter; you'd think he'd at least try to quit for our health, let alone the general revolting stink it makes, but nope. Not a concession made. That's an addict for you. >:( So I can either hide my beautful boys in a vacuum somewhere or we can all suffer together. Which is what happens, I guess. :( It makes me sad on many many levels.

    3. Well, my mom smokes every night when everyone else is asleep, and I've had no problems. I can't imagine it would be good for the dolls, but I clean them regularly and I've never had them yellow or anything. ^_^

    4. Rei oh I am sorry my sister suffered with asthma too and I remember long car rides with both parents smoking and her coughing. It does make you wonder on many levels children hate smoking period.

    5. Hiyas

I smoke arghhh I know yucky.. but I dont smoke in my house ever !! and dont allow anyone else to smoke either... much to disgust of inlaws lol... but I its because... a.. hate the smell in the house... b.. have kids and dont like it round them, even though the are now 12 and 14 .... and c.. because of my dolls and my love birds... I prefer a smoke free house... which is better for all...

I think if you clean dolls regularly that come in contact with moke from cigrettes and incence cones/sticks etc your dolls should be fine... And if the main smoking room in the front room.. then just dont leave them in there all the time..and that should help to.

      Hugs Maz x

    6. Your father seems so sweet to be able to do that for you~ n_n I'm sure your doll will be nice and safe now! :)

    7. My mother and my boyfriend smoke, but I don't allow smoking in my bedroom anyway, which is where I keep my dolls, so neither smoke downstairs. I'm sure it still comes in from the vents and things, but it keeps them safer from discoloring and odors than being in the same room as regular smoking.

    8. My father smokes, and I'm asthmatic - he doesn't smoke near me, and I keep my doll by my side, so there isn't really much exposure to smoke at all.

    9. *lol* I surely hope so.. I was really freaked out. :sweat

Thanks anyway from all of you, guess I'll bring them downstairs for photoshoots and such only.. (or when we have visitors, can't wait to scare the hell out of my family.. )

    10. I probably wouldn't buy anything from a smoking house.
My bf's mom smokes and I can smell it on his t-shirts.
The smell is not really that strong, as it is often mixed with his large amount of aftershave (don't know if its good or bad..-.-+)
Why not suggest your dad to quit smoking?
Smoking can contribute to a hell of a lot of health problems....

    11. I'm surprised to hear how many smoke inside. If you have family members who don't smoke, it's really not a good idea. Passive smoking can be as harmful as smoking yourself. My dad was sent outside to smoke way before I was born, so the rest of the family (including any dolls...) were safe from most of the smoke.

But, I agree, it's good to know bjds can help people reserve their health.

    12. Hm.. I didn't want to do that because there is so much stress in the house now (which is also the main reason for Alex to come 4 months early :sweat )

But he smoked outside just this morning! And I think he'll get in that routine fast enough, it's still 1 and a half months before Alex gets here so I'm not worrying too much anymore.

My longs aren't the best as well, so I'm happy for myself now that he decided to smoke less and such.

    13. Thanks Treelore; it drives me crazy. :( But i'll manage to protect me and my boys somehow! :)

    14. My brother he is the smoker in the house and he always smoke in his own room shut but since my room just beside his room and our bathroom window always open smoke can get in easily to my room and stink up the whole area and I'm afraid that too cause my girl was in my room sitting on my bed.

Since then mum get me an airfreshner, a machine actually fill up with water and some aroma essence, once open that my room smells great and the stinky smell of smoke gone. In other way I also clean her all the time and let her wear long sleeve. This actually help me prevent her from the smoke and the smell.

    15. Well, the major reason I think most people list 'smoke free home' is because of people who would have to turn around and re-sell a wig/clothes if they came smelling like smoke, due to having actual allergies to the smell of the smoke. Then there's people like me, who tend to avoid items coming from a smoker's home simply becuase we don't like the smell.

So I would say it would only be a *major* concern if you planned on opening a clothing store or similar.

Depending on where you live, your father smoking a cigar or two a day may not do your doll any more damage than the actual air itself. Specifically, living in Mexico City is like smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, and this also applies to larger urban cities like LA and Chicago and New York, ect, but I'm not sure to what extent.

All dolls will eventually yellow, all you can really do is try to avoid things that will speed up the process, and I'd almost wager sunlight is a bigger threat to your doll than occasionally being around smoke as far as yellowing goes.

So I would say the biggest concern you're looking at is the smell seeping into the doll. As many have said, keep the doll in an air-tight container when you are not playing with it. Although any excuse to get someone to lessen their smoking is a good one, I'm guessing your father *probably* isn't going to be too happy with the idea of having to smoke outside for the sake of a doll.

EDIT: Your dad seems to be an exception to what I've experienced with smokers than, which is a good thing. I remember reading quite a few smokers writing in response a "Dear Abby" writer who didn't want to take her children to her mother's house because she would smoke around them saying that they'd rather NOT see their grandchildren than give up smoking. One even said she'd write the family out of the will if they made her stop smoking.

    16. just one thing. Humidity yellows your doll. I dunno the one you got actually sprays water molecules into your room or what not, but dry environment is best for dolls.

    17. As others have said, make sure to give your doll a bath now and then. If you're thinking of selling any doll accessiores though, make sure to let people know that you live in a smoking home. My freind got a pair of pants for her doll once and they smelled like pot :( it was horrible. But, with a little wash and some time, it evetually faded. So I don't think any perminate damage could happen if you keep up with the washing.

    18. It doesn't spray water to my room.. is just an air fresherner which absord dusts and smokes. xD My doll currently din turn yellow as she still look normal. My country not just a dry enviroment but hot as well... Asia country won't be having wet problem except raining day that's all.

    19. Now I have a question! I was going to buy some doll stuff from EBay and the seller is a smoker, and she offered to Febreeze the clothing- it's leather and stuff that I don't think I could wash without ruining it- would the Febreeze damage doll resin though?

    20. Febreeze wouldn't dammage the doll resin, especially if it wasn't sprayed directly on the doll.
