Smoke in your house with bjd?

Jan 2, 2005

    1. Oh WOW! Thanx! That's a good tip!

And to all of you guys, I just wanna say don't even clean your doll too much. Mainly if you're using magic sponge, detergent, or any other 'harsh' soaps.
Basically the way 'cleaning' works is by sanding the object a little..although just a tiny bit that eyes can barely see it..but still, to me it hurts the resin and could decrease the diffense of the resin against yellowing..

    2. I guess I'm lucky then.. When I got my girl I was living in a non-smoking enviorment and before I had to move back with my parents they had both stopped smoking. I really wouldn't have thought about it hurting my doll either if they were smoking..

    3. I can't see that it would be a problem unless you want to sell your doll. The yellowing happens slowly if you keep the dolls away from the direct smoke, and can be cleaned, as many people have said. As for the smell, she won't smell any worse or better than your clothes and your other belongings, so you're unlikely to notice it, and your friends won't notice it as being any different from anything else you have.

    4. I'm glad to hear it's not too bad for the doll - my parents both smoke indoors. (Apparently if I have a problem with it, I'm welcome to move out... You can't say fairer than that, can you? Lol.)

    5. wanted to post this now before i forget, which i will:sweat
i have been wondering lately, how bad is smoking viewed in the dolfie world? er hard to say... like besides people who are alergic to smoke, how much do you judge purchaseing something from a home with smoking people? do you not like purchasing from someone who lives with a smoker. i might have to edit this later for clarity:| like i live with my parents who smoke, alot, but in the garage. i never put anything i plan to sell near that room and i know the smell travels and all but, thats easy to fix when you are selling something right? :aheartbea fabreeze:aheartbea

also just how bad is cigarett smoke for resin?

(please for give any un-clearness. niquill mixed with advill does not do good for a person asking a question)
i will clarify if asked to

    6. Hi!
Well I grew up in a housefull of smokers, so I can feel your pain...!

I don't generally purchase from smoking homes, unless the item is at a substantial discount and is washable. Dollfie clothes, for example are often fragile and don't hold up well with washing, which doesn't even get all the smell out, unfortunately.

The dolls themselves I think, fare a bit better. Elastic can be discarded and replaced, and the resin parts washed well in strong detergent, very hot water and/or solvents as needed.

Unfortunately I find Febreeze is as bad as smoke when it comes to smell. Perfumey stuff stinks just as bad, though perhaps in a different way... it's just as obnoxious to me though.

Anyway, my heart truly goes out to you, being a teen or young adult trapped in a home of people inconsiderate enough to damage your health with their smoke. I know it's not "PC" perhaps of me to say it, but I can't believe that people still do this to their kids in this "informed" day and age. There's just no excuse. Shame on them.

    7. *blush* well...my parents are considerate enough to smoke in a room we arnt alowed in....
i never thought that cigarett smell was hard to get rid of. tho i guess im sortta used to it and i dont know anyone who doesnt smoke or at least lives with one person who does smoke. so maybe we cant smell it when are dolls have it on them? *just confused herself a little*

    8. Yes.. I used to go to my friends' houses and their parents would wrinkle their noses and say "What smells like smoke?" I had no idea it was me.

I'm glad you haven't had this experience at least.
      Awful stuff!! XD

      Heh. but that's off-topic.

I wonder if anyone's had any dollies arrive brown from cigarrette smoke?

    9. Oh no! I'm worried now! :o My parents smoke but I usually never let them into my room.. Is my Rosette in any harm if she stays in my room all the time? Or if we go directly outside from my room and not stay inside the main house for to long? :...(

    10. As we bought a home that belonged to a smoker, I would recommend keeping your dolls away from smoke if possible.
Our walls bleed tar and yellow stuff.. x_x It's not as bad now, after living here a few years, but it just makes me wonder what else in the house has that stuff in it...
Much of the original stuff in the house was yellowed. I'd assume the same would happen with a doll, as many of the plastic things = yellowed.
      Cigarette smell is horrible to get rid of. I lent a dress to one of my dear friends for a night .. it's been a year later, and it still smells like her smoke ^^;
Unless you want to sell your doll, it shouldn't be too much for a problem.
Love your dolls to death! ^^
Oh.. I probably wouldn't buy from a smoking home.. D: I don't know about the others, but the smell is just too hard to get rid of, and all the yuckiness residue keeps me away from the items.

    11. I went to stay at my friends house one time and I took Kari with me, I was there two days and her hair and clothes stank of smoke when I got home, it's was gross, she wasn't impressed with me. :/

    12. In personal experience, if your room is away from the rooms where parents/roomates/whoever smokes are, then your doll wont have visible yellowing.

Also short periods of time where your doll is in the smoker's enviroment wont show visible damage on a normal-skin doll. White I haven't had experience with. By short periods I mean anywhere from a week to a month. But I'm sure differing resins have different exsposure periods before the yellowing starts to show.

    13. I smoke (yes I know its gross and I need to quit) and Beren goes in his carrier or in my smoke free room before I light up. I also hand wash his clothes and him at least once a month, and I sprayed him with MSC to keep any residue from being absorbed. I myself can't smell it a lot of the time but I know its foul so I try to keep everything clean and fragrant. Usually stuff won't stain unless its in direct contact with the smoke, but the odor will get into everything you own. Wiping things down frequently also keeps the tar buildup away, its when people smoke in a room for months or years without cleaning the walls or anything that you get those nasty yellow stains on everything.

    14. I'm so terrified that Arista's going to end up smelling like smoke. I don't smoke, I despise it. But my parents have been heavy smokers my entire life -- I've made sure to keep her away from them, and they don't smoke in the house anymore, but I'm still paranoid. For a long time I didn't realize how easily clothes and things can pick up that scent... then I went away to college for awhile.

My big concern is that even though I keep her a good distance away from my parents (sometimes in completely different homes), I'm worried she'll end up smelling like them just being around them for a short while.

    15. My parents are heavy smokers - you can imagine my horror after I moved out and went to college and found out how much I exactly do stink after spending a couple of hours over there.

I've brought dolls over once or twice to show them off. My dad (my mom won't have anything to do with them - haha) is very good about not smoking around them. I've had them babysit my parakeet for a week and he was VERY good about not smoking around him either.

But still - i smelt it vaguely on their wigs when I brought them home. I spritzed them with some febreeze and BAM! it was gone.

I'm just really glad that i'm out of that enviroment and I truly sympathize with everyone who is in that situation right now!

    16. Both my parents smoke. Anyone who does not smoke knows well how much it stinks! I spray Riku's clothes LIGHTLY with Febreze and place them near an open window to get the smell off.

When the resin starts yellowing take toothpaste and a toothbrush and give them a scrubbing.(Watch the face up!) The toothpaste is abrasive enough to get the yellowing off and not hurt the resin in the process.

    17. I dunno what I'd do if I got something that smelled of cigs. I'd prolly make a nasty face and huck it out the window. I can't STAND cig smell. I spaz every time someone comes near me with one. XP

    18. I don't smoke in my apartment(yay deck), but we do light insence...does anyone know if that will damage the resin?

    19. I think unless you're burning a pack a day of incense you're probably OK~!

Although, speaking as a person with allergies, I'm almost as allergic to certain incense as I am to cigarette smoke. :ablah: But, I've never found incense smell to linger as aggressively as cigarette smoke. Potpourri is even worse than incense and I can't even go in a store that has those 'cinnamon-scented pine cones' around Christmas. *_*

So, I think this is a really great discussion topic since some of us more fragile/allergic people are really vulnerable to second-hand dolly-related smoke!

    20. My mom smokes, dad used to but quit after his heart problems. My mom smokes in the house but mostly in the living room and kitchen. I'm glad my room is at the end of the hall and anyone who smokes is never to come into my room or else. I also keep my dolls far away the smoke. I don't want the smell to get on them or there clothes. Plus smelling it makes me feel sick 0__0
