Smoke in your house with bjd?

Jan 2, 2005

    1. I keep my dolls in their boxes, to avoid smoke stains. I can't bear the thought of ruining my expensive toys like that, so when I move into my own place, I want it totally smoke free. I don't mind smoking outside anyway.

    2. In my opinion with regard to sales, I don't mind buying from a smoking household as it's usually repairable. I'm also not allergic to smoke. But I'd rather not pay top dollar for items that I will need to alter (laundering, etc...) for my purposes. Smoking is a personal choice and I'm not going to knock anyone for doing it. As for my dolls, I don't allow them around smoke. I won't take them to homes known to have smokers. I also avoid walking through smoking areas at conventions with them; which can be aggravating considering every outside leading door seems to be a self designated smoke lounge. I proceed with the same caution as sunlight and heat with regard to smoke damage. No one is allowed to smoke in my car or apartment but are welcome to smoke outside so long as it's far away from the door and some time passes before coming back inside. I'd like to think of myself as being tolerant of their choice to smoke and expect the same tolerance in return.

      I don't think I've owned a secondhand doll that has come from a smoking home so I can't really speak from personal experience.

      I'd be more concerned about owners who have cats than who smoke. Cat urine is one of the foulest odors I've ever come across and I'm severally allergic to it. And in my experience, I've found it's also near impossible to remove it without using lime. I have several doll friends who have multiple cats living in their homes. Their dolls still retain the smell even if it's been out of its home for several months. ^^;

      As far as smoke other than cigarettes is concerned, I'm sure they discolor and permeate just as much. I once worked at a BBQ restaurant and I would keep my white cotton purse in a closed glass cabinet near the wood smoker. I took the same purse to work everyday for a year and I noticed it would smell of BBQ smoke and had turn a cream color over time. I'm not saying this would happen to someone's doll but the smoke did discolor my bag and infused it with its scent. The smell from the smoke would stick to my work clothes as well. It wasn't an unpleasant smell but not one I'd want my dolls to smell like. Also, all smoke has some amount of health hazard associated with it. The vapors released can have carcinogenic and even toxic properties in small quantities. A quick Google search can reveal how even lighting candles indoors can be unhealthy for you. A city's rate of smog can also have an impact on ones health.

      Needless to say, we can't live inside a bubble. It's just a matter of lessening the impact of these factors as it's an exhausting task to try and avoid them entirely.

    3. Man I need to quit smoking xD as soon as I clicked on this thread, I got a mental popup telling me its time for a smoke >_<

      As for smoking, we dont smoke inside and my doll never really goes anywhere with me so its never been a concern for me, but I would be worried to keep my doll in a smoking environment because of how badly cigarette smoke stains everything. I remember my mom and grandma trying to scrub down my great grandmas walls after she passed away #_# Im sure this would be easily scrubbed off with a magic eraser if the doll hadnt been exposed to it for like a decade, but you cant really scrub off a head that has a face-up ^ ^;;

    4. I also treat smoke like I do bright sunlight. I rarely take a doll to my chain smoking girlfriend's house, and while it's there I try not to expose it to the "air" (it's really mostly pure smoke... horrible) of the area she smokes in. But really, the smoke spreads all throughout the house (something heavy smokers are often in denial about it seems), and even having a doll in the most smoke free rooms there will make it (and myself) stink to a certain degree.

      I've found with my sparing smoke contact, my dolls do lose the stench with relative ease and I don't think the occasional exposure yellows them. Especially after washing the wigs and clothes, and giving the doll itself a little sponge bath I'm sure would help a lot too.

      And I'd say any type of smoke isn't something you want coating your doll.

    5. I just smoke outside. I don't like smoking inside anyways. I also wash my hands before I touch my dolls..

    6. yes i'm not smoking and i really won't buy from sellers, where the doll is smelling like a cigarette.. So anyway my father is a smoker, but he have to go out of the house to smoke.. :) My dolls are pethair free and smoke free and i'm happy about this fact! :)

    7. I once worked in a place that allowed smoking [back in the dark ages] and the person behind me was a chain smoker. MY computer was yellow!! And my hair was stinky every evening when I went home. These are the same effects that happen to a doll, and her box, pillows...

      I bought a doll from someone once where I didn't ask and they didn't tell. When I opened the box it had a very strong odor from cigarettes. It was making the whole room stink. I had to throw away the box, immediately. Fortunately the doll lost her smell. It was a Delilah, off topic, so I won't ever sell her here. But, if I did have a bjd with this situation, and the smell didn't leave the doll, I would have to include in the description a mention of the odor.

    8. i heard that if the doll turn yellow by time,what we can do is color their skin again or rib the surface resin a bit...

    9. We don't smoke indoors, so it's not a problem for us.
      I also like people telling me whether they smoke or not when buying something from them.

    10. I am a non smoker and do not allow smoking in the house or my car. I keep all my dolls in a dark room away from sun and light. I bought a doll once that smelled terrible of cigarette smoke, thankfully it was nice outside so I washed her clothers and left her outside all day. I had to do it for a few days(leave her outside) but it worked,then I sold her.

    11. I don't smoke, but I live with smokers, always have. To be honest, I hate the habit. I've never allowed smoking in my personal space (though when I lived with my parents I couldn't exactly stop them from smoking in the rest of the house, so my earliest dolls were definitely not 100% safe from odor) and all of the dolls I've bought in the last few years have been in a home where all the smokers smoke outside nearly all the time. That said, seeing as I really dislike the smell, I still notice it waft back in the house on them, and we live in a ground level home with a window on the driveway...and all the neighbors smoke, too. So, I try my best to keep my dolls protected, but sometimes life just doesn't cooperate. I always disclose when I'm looking to re-home; honesty is the best policy.

    12. I'm in a smoking household. No one smokes inside ever, because my mom doesn't want to ruin the wallpaper, but still. People have allergies, and if I were to sell an item I'd list it as being from a smoking household just to be safe. My brother has asthma and some things can trigger him so bad he needs to go the the hospital. I don't know if I could forgive myself if misinformation like that caused someone to be ill.

    13. One of my friends smoke in the bathroom.
      The ceiling and the grout for joints have already become yellow.
      I don't smoke, don't allow anyone to smoke in my house.
      In my opinion, this is a good solution.

    14. I can't be around dolls that are exposed to cigar/cigarette/pipe/whatever smoke, I can't really be close to people who do either. I won't buy a doll from a smoker, because it'll be doused in carcinogens I would have to deal with, not to mention the smells. I can't quite believe the choice of people who will smoke but do it outdoors to avoid "ruining the wallpaper". Forget the wallpaper, what about lungs? It's your choice, but those are some strange priorities... *headshake*
      As I am fond of saying, "I'm allergic to smoke, it gives me cancer."

    15. I'm a non-smoker and my mum is also a non-smoker, so I would likely not buy from anyone who does smoke, because I'm actually allergic to it, and she has breathing problems so it would harm her just as much as it would me. My mum USED to smoke, and so did my grandmother until she died, and the smell was always horrible, it got into and onto everything. I'd walk through the house spraying fabreeze or air fresheners ahead of me on the way out and on the way in again, and had to block off my bedroom and literally FORBID people to smoke in the hallway in front of it and in my rooms.

      Its a really gross habit, it makes your skin, hair and teeth all yellow, makes the walls of your house yellow and tacky, and it clings to everything you own, I really wouldn't want all that on a doll, especially as expensive as these are and how much all the accessories cost! Its bad enough that sunlight and other environmental factors that you can't really help yellow the dolls, I wouldn't want to expose them to something you could actually control, like smoking. Plus the tar that clings is oily in nature and oil in and of itself is bad, I shudder to think what that would do. So far all my dolls (and accoutrements) are either brand new from the manufacturer or bought second hand from a person I KNOW, so that it was safe.

    16. I started collecting dolls when I was twelve, and of course lived at home with two smoking parents. I've never noticed smoking persecution before then. It's a filthy habit and I do not smoke, but it still made (makes) me feel awful. One time I met a girl on DoA who lived in the same town as I did. I was very excited and said we should meet up and play with dolls sometime! She replied with "Yeah I would go to your house sometime but I would NEVER bring my dolls there around that filthy smoke." -- way to completely alienate a new friend and insult me at the same time. I was so flabbergasted. It's not my choice-- I can't make someone else stop smoking (my family!) I can only choose not to do it myself. That girl in particular I had never invited to my home. I would not invite strangers into my home if they had a problem with the smoke-- and I would not have a problem with going somewhere else if they DID have a problem with it.

      I did make the mistake of selling some items on here without mentioning it's a smoking home-- because it's not me that smokes, I had never even taken it into consideration. My fault, I realize now.

      It's sad that other people's habits can affect how one enjoys the hobby, though.

    17. In the presence of Flori I do not smoke, I worry

    18. All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't get into this hobby before I quit. I collect figures and some of them are never going to be sellable because of yellowing. Nothing severe but enough to be a problem.

    19. I smoke in my house, but NEVER in the same room as my dolls. And I always wash my hands before handling them, because if you have residue on your fingers it can stain your dol. And yes... smoking WILL cause an icky, yellowy residue that can potentially stain your fingers. And if it can stain your fingers, it can stain your doll. I know... disgusting, right?

    20. I am a smoker and know that to non-smokers, I reek! I love the hint about putting the clothes in the freezer with a dryer sheet for a couple days. I have been wanting to try to sell some outfits I made on ebay but don't want to sell them because I KNOW they stink of cigarettes really bad. I am going to try this out and have my daughter take the item to her school and have her friends smell it....make sure they don't stink anymore....and if not, I will list them. Thanks again for the hint!
