1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

So what should we call ourselves? (Opinions Wanted)

Feb 14, 2013

    1. Usually I respond to the question with, "I customize Asian ball-jointed dolls.." If they seem interested, I elaborate.

I find nothing wrong in differentiating between the generic "doll" term and something a bit more specific. What has happened before is I mentioned I customized dolls and the lady I was talking to starting a huge one-sided conversation about antique dolls....of which I know very VERY little about. That is why I like being more specific with my answers. Sometimes someone will assume something and not give much time to correct before interjecting a massive bit of speech. Also, it makes talking to male friends that may not think dolls are cool a little easier. Saying that I customize Asian ball-jointed dolls sounds a bit more accessible than "I collect dolls."

I am not superiour to anyone. My hobby is not superiour to any other hobby. It is different. Therefore I want to address it by something different.

I love the term "resinista" and may end up using it. :)

    2. That would be nice if you're collecting reborns or Himstedts. :mwahahaHA!
      I prefer doll motha.

    3. I think of myself as a doll collector.

    4. rofl sounds like somthing unmentionable!

    5. Have to agree with both.
Not sure labeling is necessary as most people who don't know about this hobby will be able to relate to the topic BJD's.
      They'll understand Doll Collectors.
      Does that make sense?

    6. Do we have to call ourselves anything?
As fun as "Resinista" sounds, actually using it in conversation would probably just draw a blank stare and a "What? Is that some kind of club?" o_o; Only stalling the fact that I collect dolls. Coming up with alternative names for something makes me think (general)you might be embarrassed about it. I'm not embarrassed about collecting dolls, and as I own *many* different types of dolls/figurines/toys I don't mind calling myself a 'Doll Collector'. That's what I am, and what I do, so it's simple enough! :) And if people assume I collect a specific type of doll (ie reborns or antique dolls) that I'm not into, I'd just politely correct them, and be happy that they knew something about dolls at all! XD

    7. I'm not clever at coming up with names like that. I just say I collect BJDs. Resinista is a cute name though,I wouldn't mind if that caught on.

    8. I agree with Harlequin-Elle.I think we shouldn't really call us something specific, because the BJD hobby is so varied. You can do almost everything with your doll, and customize it in your own way. If I had to choose, I would choose BJD owner. Its something simple, and if people ask about it you can explain it, and even make them curious.

    9. I have this strong urge to call myself a baller. Holla, Holla, my BJD cost a lot'a dollas. (Oh that was bad...I'm sorry. It's Spring...the weather makes me do funny things.)

I just say "doll collector". People already assume that by the dolls I carry...so not much thought on my part. :P

    10. Pffttt, I like "baller". Good description to give oneself regardless of intent!

Resinista is cute too. But I'd probably never call myself that, since, as other people mentioned, it's really hard to figure out what it actually refers to. I usually say I collect Asian art sculptures/dolls (depending on whether this person will ever see the inside of my house). Sounds pretentious enough that people leave me alone about my interests.

If it's someone who's actually cool and is a good friend, I'll elaborate and say they're ball-jointed and yadda-yadda. I can usually tell pretty easily who'd be interested in seeing them, and who wouldn't.

    11. if asked if i have a hobby, I'm a collector. Then I say i collect several types of things, if i elaborate I can tell them several things. I have collected figurines, a few antiques, more Barbies than I care to admit, and now asian ball joint dolls. start broad then get specific ^^. If someone spots me with just my abjd somewhere. I say 'it's a special type of doll I collect'.

    12. Probably, in all contacts to avoid confusion, doll or bjd collector is the best. Sometimes I have the urge to say "bjd-ers". I do like the term "resinista" though. Sounds pretty.

    13. I just stick with hobbyist. Or, if I'm feeling pretentious, artist. Like many of the people here, I don't just collect dolls; I customize them, paint their faces, sew them clothing, take photos, etc. I feel like I do too much to just slap on a simple label like "doll collector" because there's more to it than that. I generally don't discuss my hobby with strangers, though. People think I'm weird enough as it is.

    14. I like this one a lot - though I don't generally admit to people that I collect dolls. Only the people who really know me well and the people I meet on line that share my passion know that about me.
