Soom MD: May Grit and Syen- Little Guardians!

May 14, 2010

    1. It's OK, because I'm half Japanese. It's a very known thing in Asian culture. Trust me.
Many Asians get their eyes clipped. Or another surgery to make a double eyelid.

And I agree about Sphaler, I found his Soom faceup not so
appealing but have really liked a lot custom faceups which
then also made me like his sculpt too.

    2. Well, Soom's ENTIRE staff has changed since the MD line started.
The people making these dolls, writing the stories, etc.. they're different people.
So it makes sense that the look is different to before.
I think this is probably what we're going to be seeing more of now, this type of sculpt.

    3. Thanks for confirming what I felt but couldn't know for certain!!
Hmmm.... I wonder what brought about the entire change. IMO
their design team was great. Sometimes change is good other times
not so much (obviously) Kind of makes me sad for them, and also
because I haven't felt the same vibe (?) from the MDs this year.
This whole single joint leg thing, I wonder if it's going to be a regular
thing. I would have hoped Soom would try to improve joints &
not remove them. Here's hoping that these babies aren't a victim too.

    4. Hmmm well. I think part of it is just that things do change within a company.
People do quit and move on, and the MDs have been going on for so long, it makes sense that the majority of the Soom staff has changed since then.
But I also thing that things got tough within the company. It became so popular and HUGE, things just really changed.
People who liked the smaller company vibe probably left, and I think they wanted to change the direction of the MDs anyway. Those not happy with that left perhaps?
I don't know the full story, but just that a lot of people weren't happy anymore and so everything changed.

I'd definitely say that the kitties and bat/gargoyles look totally different to any of last years dolls, that's for sure!

    5. I don't buy Soom for the outstanding poseability, so that's fine with me one way or the other. I don't mind pointy noses, it's like I finally get a chibi Euclase, as someone noted, LOL! What I do potentially mind would be two heads again...the scramble for extra bodies really leaves me a little cold with Soom sometimes, I come to loathe floating heads more. At this point two heads would not be enticing... :|

But we'll see. I'm not overly moved yet, but I'm tired and was expecting this next week, LOL! I am excited by the concept, we'll have to see with more pics, but so far, it looks like my Souldoll Shiva plans may become reality!

      .hlp

    6. Ah, it just sounded like an odd thing to say given that the number of people falling under the umbrella of "Asian" is in the billions, and that I just assumed it was unlikely that all Asian cultures were the same. The words "eyes clipped" freaked me out. Is that a surgery? AUGH oh I don't want to think about it. X_X OT anyhow

I wasn't aware that things had changed so drastically inside Soom, but granted I only got into the hobby last fall, so I missed out on a lot of the early stuff with most companies. I like that their sculpts look different, though, although I understand people who really liked their earlier stuff might be disappointed. I'm curious what we'll be seeing in the way of new SGs in general since they're discontinuing most of their current line. Shonki and Appini had me very disappointed by their sculpts, so I was thinking I'd feel the same way about these tiny gargoyles, but they are totally adorable. I'm very interested in seeing what sort of little feets they have.

Heidi: The SG discontinuation has meant I need to snatch up a Lazule before they're gone, so it looks like I'm further postponing my Shiva. SIGH.

    7. I must say that Grit seems to have completely soomed me for the first time with one of their tinies :D except alk but unfortunately that was on the second hand market! Anyway, I think he will be a must have for me, whether I get the outfit or not remains to be seen but it looks very cute! And I love grumpy tinies haha :D

    8. Weren't lots of folks begging for baby vampires? Now they are here. So hopefully since I've been begging for a SG green tree nymph they will have that soon too. BTW why does Soom seem to be re-using fantasy eyes; these looks like Galena's and Monzo's, I'd like some pink or green sparkles.

    9. No, you're right I shouldn't generalize. I should have said many
feel that way. I guess sometimes I just get ~~> when I
hear people say in a non-positive way "the sculpt looks so Asian"
because these dolls ARE made by Asians in Asian countries. So
if every now and then one might "look" Asian isn't that OK?
Yes, it's kinda OT and no nobody was negative here.... *sigh*
I should probably delete my comment but then others might
scratch their head so I'll just deal with it.

Anyhow IMO the little line made above her eye is to create
      an eyelid "crease".

    10. Ahahaha YES. We are just going to have to be VERY VERY VERBAL about our need for sparkly green resin..
And I want some REAL BLUE resin.. and PINK RESIN. and PURPLE RESIN.
      And all SPARKLY. xD

    11. I think they are so cute, but I don't like the sticky out fangs much. I wait for more pics...

    12. Lula: Sphaler has a very Asian sculpt when you wipe away the gobs of make-up he's wearing. I was very sad to see that they made this beautiful face and then painted him to undo it all. Soom can do some absolutely beautiful painting, but sometimes they really drop the ball, where the face-up actually detracts from the beauty of the doll (see; Shonki).

Now that I think about it, though, it makes me sad that generally the face-ups on all their tinies tend to be very similar- uber neutral. I'd like it if they took more chances. In previous threads there were wishes that they would offer the option between high fantasy painting, or more natural ones. I think this needs to happen. These kids look cute, but it wouldn't have been crazy hard to step it up some.

    13. Perhaps make a petition? I would most certainly join. I'm dying for
      a purple/sparkly teenie gem!!!!
So, I've already decided I need both of them. Now I have to figure out
      how I manage that.

Agree, Shpaler looks very Asian blank. I still wonder what they were
thinking when they decided on his makeup.

    14. Why hello~!
      they look like little cuties~
I cannot wait to see more piccies... i'm very tempted!

    15. Well, Im Soomed.
Those lil wings and horns, ( and the grey resin) it made me fall in love!!, i love their faces trough, but..I cant them let it go. May i have to sell something T_T They look like a Teenie version of Monzo too, so, i cant, my wallet suffers.

    16. You know.. I'd be very much tempted.
I just want to see these resin colours SO BADLY. The only companies I think really doing this kind of thing are .. uhh,. Bambicrony.. and they're not even doing it right now.
Of course Souldoll are doing it a bit too, but again, not with fantasy parts and the dolls are BIG.
Cute little coloured tinies are needed by ME!!

    17. I've never been this excited for a soom MD before! If there is a floating head, I'll order a 1/6 Dikadoll body in grey, as I hear they are a good match. I've been browsing the Marketplace for a Bygg head to do the same too, actually. I just need all of the grey resined dolls! Weirdly Monzo wasn't my thing at all. I think his body looked disproportionate. But tiiiiinies *______*

I also adore the WS girl but I don't want her as bad. Though in my dreeeaaams, I'd love twins of the grey ones!

    18. I will totally sign anything anyone puts together asking for pink and/or green resin! And I forgot about sparkles, I love sparkled resin, I think even WS should sparkle.

    19. Oh and can I say that I love their little clothes? I think that the clothes are really getting better then they were last year.

    20. oh gawd, I don't need to be tempted again X.x; I just paid off my appini and getting another teenie off the market place ; ; and getting stuff for them T-T
