1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Soom Monthly Dolls June (Gemini) the Third Land: Onyx - Light and Shadow

Jun 18, 2008

    1. No matter how experienced a company is with making non-standard colors, no matter how much they've "perfected" the technique the production of those colors will always be difficult. It takes casting more than ten doll's worth of parts to get one doll in sellable condition assuming everything goes right. Resin is a finicky beast.

It's easy for a customer to say "make more" or "make them faster" or "perfect your technique". But I think people's expectations are somehow happening outside of what many BJD collectors know about making odd colored resins. It is difficult no matter what. It takes time. It requires customer patience.

We're waiting on Onyx twins as well at my house. I know that they'll get here eventually. If they work out, they'll live here for years and years and I'll forget how long we waited for them. It's a small amount of time in the big scheme of things. ;)

    2. I think the 'order period may be shortened' thing is just a marketing ploy. Stuff would sell better if their target customer group thinks that they have less time to get their doll. It increases the number of dolls sold via impulse buys, and those who already plan to get them would hit the 'buy' button faster if they thought that there was the chance of them missing out on it if they wait.

It's a good way to make money?

    3. idrisfynn said it well. Even when the makers know the "formula" for resin colours and such, it still takes heaps of goes to get it right, from what I've read on the dollmakers' subforum, and even from the Dollshe Il Milione Bermann affair. These are artist dolls, not Barbies - really, why is everyone being so slack to Soom?

    4. Just to add to idrisfynn's comments, humidity and temperature can also adversely affect the pours.

chizzie_shark: hear hear! BJDs are art forms created by hand and one by one. They are NOT mass produced pink plastic dolls.

I would much rather the company take time to create perfect dolls. What is worse--waiting a bit longer or receiving an imperfect doll? Anticipation is part of the fun of BJDs. Patience, please!

    5. I know they've just started to ship, but as people get their girls, I would love to know what size eyes everyone is using. I know Soom's website says 14mm, but considering Unoa wears 12mm, I'm worried that 14mm will be too small! My MSD used to wear 16mm! *_*

    6. My Beryl wears 14mm just fine, FWIW.

So does my Hound -- larger dolls with smaller, more "mature" eyesockets often take smaller eyes than you'd expect -- MSDs, in general, have big, childlike eyes!

      -- A <3

    7. I'm not the most patient person in the world. I don't think I've ever been. =_= I really don't like waiting for a doll to come home, I get itchy.

But saying that, even if my Shadow Onyx takes another month to get here, I'm not going to sweat it. I was a little bummed out at first thinking she wouldn't make it home before my birthday [nov. 6th], but after I heard they were having resin issues, I'll wait as long as I have to to insure she's made right.

I helped a DoAer with her artist dolls once, and let me tell you - casting colored resin so that it's quality is good enough to sell is not at all easy. There are so many factors, so many problems that arise because of the process used to tint the mixture, that our list was long and extensive. I can only imagine the kind of labor-intensive work they're doing. Just imagine the quantity of dolls they're producing, and the multiply that by the average number of possible problems each doll's casting may have.

Four months is not long at all. And two more weeks is nothing short of miraculous.

    8. Those eyes look great! I 'd better decide what color to go with...

    9. Did anyone who ordered Onyx without body blushing receive a blushed body? It's normally $75 extra, and I definitely didn't order/pay for it.

I'd wanted an unblushed body since I had an idea about body blushing in another color scheme that I'd wanted to try, so I'm trying to find out if everyone who ordered a fullset Onyx w/face-up got a blushed body, or whether it was just me.

(BTW, if anyone wants a Shadow Onyx blushed body and would like to trade for an unblushed version, please let me know via PM!)

-- A (kind of frustrated, since the first thing I do with a new doll usually isn't worrying about whether it's safe to wipe the resin!)

    10. Wow, I guess it's not so fortunate in your case Ashbet! o.o; I got the wig for free, even though I didn't order it ^^ But in the end I was really happy with it~ <3

I wonder if they made mistakes?

    11. My twins arrived this past week and I'm totally thrilled with them! :D The gray resin is fascinating. It shifts from purplish to bluish to neutral gray depending on the lighting. She really stands out in the crowd around here!

Sadly, I've been too busy to paint them - four heads OMG! *_* - but I've kitted them out in their clothes and such. The 16mm eyes I already had definitely don't fit, so I'll have to find something different for my Light Onyx.
So many people have mentioned that they can't find anything to fit their girls, but I haven't had that problem. I guess because the Light Onyx is replacing a Dollshe girl her clothes were already huge! :sweat
I've got them in Dollmore Model girl boots which are waaaay too big, and Dream of Doll girl boots which are only slightly too big but definitely look better on her than they do on the DoD girl for whom they're intended. The high heel feet also fit SD16 girl shoes! :D
I bet there's a "What fits Super Gem girls?" thread that I should actually be posting this in. >__>

    12. Why yes, [thread=10104116]yes there is.[/thread]

There's also [thread=230759]this thread[/thread] asking about the crossover between clothing and shoes for Super Gems and SD16 girls.

      Go to it! :moo

    13. First let me say--do not try this if you have not sanded colored resin before or are even a little bit unsure.

The seams on my dark Onyx were bugging the heck out of me. I really wanted to blush her, but do not like how blushing looks on unfinished seams.

So, I showed her to the husband--he is a professional sculptor, and has done museum and toy sculpts for almost 20yrs. Paul also does scratch built model kits, etc... He said if I started with a mid grade sanding film and worked my way down in grits while wet sanding, and then buffed the surface with a dremel I could get the finish I wanted.

He told me it would take a good bit of work, and patience. Well, I have the torso finished:

Still have lots of work to do, but since the color goes through the resin it's working very well.

When I first started I had the weird discolored lines, but very fine sanding film and the buffer got rid of that.

I think the reason SOOM refunded the one gal on sanding is the amount of work involved with something like this. They would have to triple their sanding fee.

    14. omg those twins are GORGEOUS. I'm excited to see peoples dolls when they get there. They really do fit the fantasy description. They're so.. perfect, wow. The owners of these dolls are very lucky indeed!

    15. Congrats to everyone on their beautiful girls. Onyx is truly one of the most beautiful female sculpts I have seen.

I have a question about the Onyx light. How does her resin color compare to Soom's WS? Is it the same thing, or a different tone?
