Sparkle or none?

Apr 3, 2015

    1. Only if it's a girl. I've seen male dolls covered in sparkle and he was, like, a buff guy. I was so strange, put me off immediately.

    2. I like natural, realistic face ups with a bit of pastel sparkling on the cheeks and forehead.
Actually it does not look like heavy make up on them, it creates more of the Twilight vampire diamond skin effect.

    3. I love sparkle on my leeke art girls as I feel it just suits them and leeke just seem to add mica powder as part of their default face ups. I don't think it would suit my DC dolls though, unless it was added to other areas than their faces.

    4. None of my dolls have glitter powder in their faceups, probably because I associate glitter powder with more girly dolls and I own mostly large males which would look a little weird imo. I do like seeing a bit of shimmer on other people's dolls though!

    5. Personally.... I'm not quite fond of the glitter and sparkles trend... Maybe it's okay in some faceups, some, I can't stress this enough. It usually just looks tacky in my opinion, though. Of course, if it's what makes people happy by all means, they should bathe their dolls in glitter; it's just that I, personally, don't like it all that much. Or maybe I'm just unlucky because usually I see large SD boys with faceups like that and it just looks out of place... a tiny bit of shimmer on girly faceups doesn't hurt, but even then the recent trend of tons and tons of it just looks... wrong.

    6. I personally love sparkles in face ups! Fairyland usually has sparkly face ups & it's made me want sparkles on all my dolls lol

      sent through the forests

    7. I have seen pearlized powders used very effectively, most memorably on a David Bowie minimee (in his role as Jareth the Goblin King) that someone here on DOA owns. If done subtly it is very effective.

    8. I love sparkle, both on girl and boy dolls (glitter is not female exclusive), in moderation. It really depends on the overall look you're going for, some dolls just don't suit it.

    9. I like more of a natural look with my dolls using natural colors only but if I were to do a fave up with more colors and eyeshadows I'd consider using glitter or shine powders

    10. I like my dolls pretty plain..I guess you could say "soft"looking...but I have seen some really beautiful dolls with lovely sparkly faces. :)

    11. I use shimmer on my fantasy themed doll. >_> sparkle vampire.

I've seen people add it to normal human dolls to give a doll's skin tone a bit more depth, but it's easy to accidentally put on too much so it ends up looking all make-up disaster. xD Not a skill I have acquired yet.

    12. It would always depend on the look I am going for... But personally I do not really like glitter, shimmer, sparkles and so on all too much... The only time it would be alright would be for a very colorful and bright character, then I think some sparkles would fit the over all look as well ^^
On the other hand I like looking at photos of characters with a glittery face up, as long as I think it fits the character and it isn't over-done. ^o^

    13. I like both ^_^ Definitely depends on the doll for me.

    14. I think a light shimmer is nice on the eyeshadow areas, but not all over the place, and not too heavy.

    15. My Only-Doll Xuan Yan came with a free faceup from the company, and she's just plastered in glitter. It's dominating her eyeshadow and lips. I can't wait to find the right artist for her so she can have that natural look I wanted. It's too much.

I would, however, like to have a galaxy themed bjd someday. And that means glitter everywhere. It really depends on the look you're going for, but it can easily be overdone, especially considering their size.

    16. Do you like your doll face-ups with glitter (Shimmer, pearl powder, etc.) or none?
On girl dolls, I love shimmer mostly on eyes and lips. Pearly and metallics are great there, as long as it isn't too textured. A subtle sheen elsewhere is fine as long as it stays subtle. On boy dolls, I prefer the shimmer to be toned down and confined to just a touch around the eyes and on the lips. But I've seen glam looks on boy dolls that were fabulous, so it depends on the doll's persona you are trying to convey.

Do you think it makes your doll look more alive?
No. It looks pretty in certain cases, but I don't think it gives them a more "alive" look.

    17. When I first saw the company pics of IOS' M, it's weird but the shimmer around his eyes was one of the main details adding up to my decision to buy the head. I got it blank though, and didn't get around to painting him yet. I did practise a little with pearl powder however, and found out it is very easy to ruin a faceup with it. But I'll use it for him, definitely :D! I doubt I'll achieve the same effect, but yes, when thinking about M's company faceup, it does make him look more alive.

    18. Totally depends on the doll - but in general no; I prefer to not have sparkle or shimmer. My dolls are all pretty "regular" looking or natural so to speak. And I have mostly male dolls. Even the one female doll I have doesn't really have sparkle/shimmer or rather it's super subtle. Definitely prefer to leave the gloss off of my male dolls. I get distracted and it just looks like lip gloss to me especially if the over all style of the doll is very natural.

    19. Sometimes I think it looks really pretty but sometimes it just doesn't work.
I think it really depends on how well the artist knows how the materials work. I have seen some beautiful work but I don't know if I would ever have it done on one of my dolls.

    20. I have one girl with a very subtle shine to her... You have to almost know, to see it. It was a pleasant surprise, because you really can't tell from her photographs. So I am all for it, if done like this... but I think less is definitely more.
