Startled by doll sizes?

Jan 17, 2015

    1. Goodness, yes! My first SD shocked me. He's 72cm and, even though I knew how tall that was, I wasn't prepared for the shipping box that came up almost to my hip. I had an immediate 'Oh, goodness. What have I gotten myself into?'. Guess I must have gotten over it seeing as I have almost 20 of the darn things now.

    2. When I got my first doll (SD) I was a little suprised how big she was. However I did expect her to be heavy.

    3. When I got my first resin doll, I started out big with a 62cm one...and was definitely not prepared for how big he would be. At the time I was only used to my Hujoo Berry and the little Obitsu's. So when I opened Sammy's box and pulled him out I was like 'O_____O HOLY MOLY WHAT?!' haha. I knew he'd be big, but it never really made sense in my head how big until I got him physically in my hands. The weight isn't too bad though. After him came the Yo-SD size, and I was almost started over how light and small she is in comparison. Only recently got my first MSD and she feels just about perfect, size-wise. Bit lighter than I expected. Now, granted, I have a sensory disorder and, for me, I have a difficult time judging/comparing between sizes/weights (my brain's weird - I'll look at a big stack of books and it thinks 'oh that'll be light', but then I'll look at a cup of juice and it acts like this is going to be the heaviest thing in the world ever for me to lift. XD), so when it comes to dolls I really struggle comprehending their weights/sizes. Even now for some reason I look at my 70cm doll and my brain thinks he's slightly smaller than Sammy (why, brain, why?!). Either way, I love all of the sizes! :3

    4. Oh how I can related to this post!
When my SD boy arrive. Wow. that was a shocker. I also did the measure thing and though I was prepared. But I was not. He ended up being too big for my taste.

    5. It wasn't the size of the dolls that shocked me, but for some reason even though I knew how tall my RS Long was it never really clicked how much smaller my BBB Ariel was than him. It wasn't until I put them side by side that it clicked in my brain that 70cm is almost twice as much as 40cm even though I was well aware of the size of each one individually. I also remember before getting my first doll I had read several places that BJDs were fairly heavy and bulky and so to be prepared for that when you finally got one. I figured they meant heavy, like 5-10 pounds, but she was so light and much more sturdy than I expected a 'delicate' doll to be.

    6. I just recently went to a meet and brought my tiny girl (27cm) and she was the smallest one there, and I don't know, I guess I just wasn't expecting her to be so tiny in comparison to the other dolls. I held and looked at the other ones and I was so surprised about the weight and size difference. [IMG]
This photo is from the meet, and you can really see how tiny Sora is. The other girl is a doll owned by another girl at the meet ( sorry don't remember the user :( )

    7. ^Aww that's neat!

I don't know if I was surprised because I'd seen pictures of people with their dolls. But my friend's Soom Gem is so big... and heavy! She loves her girl though and has met larger so she doesn't feel her doll is big at all. I guess it's all perspective.

    8. I was told that BJDs are heavier than Pullip, but it was still a surprise to hold my yo-SD size girl. This is part of the reason that I wouldn't want to own a doll bigger than 45cm (that, and bigger dolls scare me a little, LOL!). I don't think I'd want to be carrying around and posing anything too heavy xD

    9. I haven't really been too bothered by my dolls size. I remember opening my Soom Breccia and being shocked at just how heavy she was tho! And at first I thought I'd only want SD's and maybe a few MSD's. Too my surprise I've actually decided to not buy anymore SD's and I absolutely love Tiny's which I always thought would be way too small. But I love how they fit in my hand!

    10. I wasn't surprised by SD vs MSD since my friends that got me into BJDs had both sizes, but I was shocked at how tiny Pukis are. I had no real concept of their look and feel until I got my Puki and had a total WTF moment. He's half the size of a Coke can!

    11. I first ordered a Feeple65 Chloe and I did the measuring tape and I was shocked by her size. I was not prepared and very quickly sold her and have converted to MSD sized dolls.

    12. I started with smaller fashion dolls so I was surprised when I bought my first msd. I recently bought my first sd, now my msd seems so tiny, you never really grasp the size until it's in your hands.

    13. When I fist started in the hobby my sister got an SD boy. I can't tell you how many times back then I keep saying "Hes huge!" lol.

    14. My first two dolls were 70 cms and 71 cms, and even though I totally expected my SDs to be smaller, I wasn't at all prepared for just how much smaller they were. 5 centimeters makes a huge difference at that scale!

    15. I wasn't. I started with tinies, but knew immediately upon getting them that I should have gone big. I am addicted to SDs and the first time I saw them in person, I realized my mental estimation of their size was dead-on. They're not heavy to me, either. My 70cm boy rides on my shoulders like a toddler, or I cradle him like one over my forearm. His weight seems perfectly natural to me. Sometimes I think I must seem awfully weird, even to BJD people ... (a close doll friend ALWAYS smiles and pokes fun when she sees me carting my big boy around like he's my kid).

Even MSDs seem like "tinies" to me, though I do plan to add at least one to the family, because even if my tinies aren't my favorite in size, I do very much enjoy having them around. Having dolls of all different sizes is very refreshing to me.

    16. I own several 60cm type SD dolls now. I've looked at the 70cm dolls a couple of times, but I think knowing they're almost a foot taller than most of the dolls I own really puts me off going there. I like the size of the 43cm and 60 cm dolls a lot. The 43 cm dolls are easier for me to dress because I have a number of Tonner and Ashton Drake dolls that I can steal a lot of clothing from. I don't have to work too hard on those. The 60cm dolls have proven to be a lot more difficult in a lot of ways. I have to make most of their clothing to fit and getting them all in shoes finally was tricky. I'm still not quite sure I have accomplished that. I have a pile of shoes coming from Miro, but I'm just not sure it will all fit everyone I planned them for and probably won't know for sure until it all shows up. The idea of dressing dolls that are nearly a foot taller doesn't really appeal that much. 60cm dolls just seem a lot more manageable to me. I've always coveted an Iple Luo but I have to wonder what I'd DO with him if I ever got him he's so huge.

Heads surprise me a lot more than the dolls sometimes. Some heads seem huge, some seem tiny compared to their pics. My latest a Ringdoll Edward he turned out to be a really small headed guy with what seems like tiny eye wells. I just did not expect that at all from his promo pics. I still love him. He's a totally gorgeous doll, but I didn't quite know what to make of him when I first got him. Fortunately his eye wells turned out to be bigger than they looked at first glance and I actually did find a pair of eyes in my BJD kit that fit okay. He actually ended up in 14mm eyes, not the 12mm eyes I thought he was going to need so it worked out okay in the end. But his head is pretty small in and of itself. I originally thought about buying him a RS or Bobobie boy body and neck-wise he probably could fit on either, but he ended up on a Miro doll body simply it was smaller than those and it just seemed to suit him more, at least I think it will. It's still on order, waiting to be shipped but I have a feeling that it's going to work very well because he's just so petite headed compared to some of my other guys.

SD sized can mean a lot of things in the BJD world. Even within different companies sizes can vary. I always thought RS and Bobobie had similar body sizes but actually my Dai who's body is being used a lot now is very petite compared to the Bobobie dolls I have. I like both bodies but Dai almost doesn't fit in because she is so little compared to the rest of my girls. If I didn't totally love her I probably would mind a lot more but she was a grail doll for me so no complaints there. When I take her out and put her next to my other dolls they just about dwarf her though. It's odd, but I work with it because she's such an important doll for me...

    17. I was mostly surprised with my Soom Shale (centa version).
He's only as tall as any MSD, but the horse body is huuuuge :D
He came in an SD sized box so collecting the box at the post office was a shocker xD

    18. I have a horrible time judging sizes unless I can compare them in real life. I've got a handle on MSDS because I have a few, but I'm still expecting myself to be shocked at the size difference when my first SD (Impldoll Chad) comes in!

    19. Size definitely was a surprise for me when I started looking into this hobby. SD and MSD dolls have beautiful detailed sculpts and I believe they look much better on photographs than tinies, but I feel like it would be hard for me to get used to a doll taller than 35 cm. I am actually hesitant to order my first doll right now because of the size, and she is only 31 cm tall. I am hoping to go to a doll meet to see some dolls in person before ordering her, this way I could at least compare her to some other dolls sizewise.

    20. I recently got an SD in hand and I can say I nearly let him fall because he was so heavy... I can't really imagine holding a 70 cm boy, to tell the truth... Slim MSD (40 cm-ish) is more my style :)
