Startled by doll sizes?

Jan 17, 2015

    1. I was the same way when my Bobobie Weylin arrived. He only weighs about 2.5 pounds, compared to four pounds for most of my SDs, and I was shocked at how lightweight he was. I found out when I glue sueded him that he is much more hollow than my other BJDs! A real featherweight.

Are you, or have you been, consistently surprised by how big or heavy ball jointed dolls are, respective to their size (SD, MSD, Yo-SD, etc)?
Yes, I was very surprised by my first one. I had only handled fashion dolls before, and Hiro was big and HEAVY. Four pounds!

I know my SD+ size BJDs so well now that it doesn't surprise me often. BUT... when DragonDoll Cheng arrived, I was surprised at how big and heavy he was! Same with Unidoll Jace, that is one SUBSTANTIAL resin doll! Cheng and Jace are noticeably heavier than my more slender Dollzone 70cm guys.

I am still shocked when shopping for clothes for SD+ BJDs at general doll shows, though! I can't get over how huge they look. I have to have a doll in hand or I will almost certainly choose clothes and shoes that are too small!

    2. When I was first getting into the doll hobby, I saw a friend's collection face to face, so I knew what to expect.

    3. so far my only BJD is a little lati yellow but yes i was suprised by how tiny she is in comparison to my blythes.
though when meeting other peoples dolls for the first time i have been suprised how large some of them are. I can't Wait for my resinsoul ya to arrive so i can see her actual size. ive used tape measures to see how tall she will stand and where she will fit, but im sure il be surprised one way or another when she arrives.

    4. Yes! When I got my first doll ResinSoul Pixiu I was expecting some smaller. He's 28cm. Then I got a 44 cm doll and was shocked how big he was. I haven't seen any of the bigger sized dolls yet and I'm sure I'll be just as shocked at the size of them too.

    5. Definitely. I've had YOSD sized dollies for years, so when I decided to get a SDC from Volks last year, the size and the weight blew my mind (weight-wise it might have been heavy for a mini, knowing Volks resin.) Anyway, I decided I couldn't deal with it because I moved around so much, so I sold her *_*

    6. I've started with SDs and my first doll was as big as I had expected, though not as light. ^^
      After that I was more surprised with dolls actually being smaller than what I had expected, though I think it's funny that some dolls of the same scale are heavier or lighter than others. ^^;

    7. My first doll was a Kid Delf, and I was definitely surprised by his size. Even though (same as op) I had looked at the height and everything with measuring tape, I just hadn't fully expected the size that he was when he actually showed up. I know they're not actually very large by way of bjd things, but all I had had previously were figmas, which are so much smaller.

    8. I don't have a bjd yet but I'm working on getting one, but I go find a measurement tape and it surprises me and I wonder where I'm going to fit one in my room if I ever get one

    9. I still can't wrap my mind around the sizes. It will be amusing when my first doll arrives for sure!

    10. Yes and No. My friend had SD size BJDs, so I knew how big they were. The thing was, I didn't want one that big, at least starting off. When I did end up getting my first BJD a Soom Fairy, I was surprise by how small she was. She is only 30 cm tall.

    11. When I got Kendra (Mystic Kids 1/4) I was expecting her height since my niece has 1/4 sized ABS dolls. What I wasn't expecting was her weight - resin is much heavier than plastic - and her solidity. However, I've only recently realized that she's on the tall end of the MSD spectrum, and finding a friend for her is proving "interesting" as I don't want her to tower over the new girl.

    12. I have collected OOAK Ken dolls for years so was very used to the light and small size.
When I got my first BJD (Impldoll marcus) I was absolutely floored at the size and weight !! lol
Everyone who comes to visit is very impressed lol
I put a Loongsoul doll on layaway, he is 80cm and I just know I am going to be blown away by the size lol

    13. I started out with 1/4 scale dolls and I don't remember being shocked by the size, but it was a while ago. When I got my first tiny, I had seen them in person first, so I was ready for that, too. The only reaction to size that I remember was to my Volks SD13 Elena. She wasn't my first SD but I was shocked by how heavy she was compared to my other two 1/3 scale dolls. My first 1/3 doll came as a head first and the body came later, so I guess I kind of eased my way into the size? lol

    14. I've been in the hobby for several years, but I'm still consistently surprised by sizes and weights.

Back when I first started, I was afraid of SD+ dolls because I'd handled an absolutely HUGE one at a convention panel and he overwhelmed me. I swore them off, but eventually took the plunge after owning only MSDs for a while. At 72 cm, that first big doll was a little intimidating, but I've grown very used to having him around. I was expecting him to be very solid, and he was, so I kind of assumed all larger dolls were heavier... then I handled a Fairyland Feeple. Wow! So light! When the owner handed her to me, I braced for the usual heaviness... and there was none!

Of course I've also been surprised the other way. Having a Super Gem, I thought I'd gone pretty far up the "bigness" scale... then I encountered a Mega Gem. Thighs the size of my fists. Yikes!

And again, I was very surprised to see my first tiny doll. And then further surprised to see my first SUPER tiny doll. They were even smaller than I'd imagined. Basically I'm just constantly "woah!" at new dolls I encounter. There's such variety out there. Even all of my MSD dolls are different heights and weights, and I'm always excited to get hold of a new doll and find out how they "feel".

    15. yep :) got a crobidoll lance head in the mail today and was shocked form how heavy he was and compared to my feeple60 girl head his resin is so much nicer than fairyland which would explain the weight difference :)

    16. For me, it wasn't so much the size, but the weight. Volks especially tend to have some serious substance!

    17. Not really by how big... More how buff about the SOOM boys and iplehouse dudes...
But the thing I've been most surprised about have been the first time I saw a Dreamhigh Studio Chibi Feilene irl! I thought Real Pukis were tiny but this?! I don't even know how I'll react when I get to see their smallest dolls irl. (5cm tall)

    18. I was surprised at how small my first BJDwas - He's a 60cm Luts Delf boy, btu that doesn't give you much to go on when you've never seen one in person or held one before - I had plenty of other dolls that height, but they were either vinyl play dolls or porcelain headed dolls on jointed composition bodies and they're much chunkier, so when I unpacked Alphie I was amazed by how skinny and delicate he was.

    19. I have collected Blythes for years so was very used to big heads with teeny bodies... my first SD was definitely something to get used to! I normally wasn't going to go higher than MSD, but she was just too pretty, and I am glad I did, you get used to it quickly. At least I did. My first PukiFee arrived today, and again it is sooooo tiny. ;)

    20. I was surprised when I found out how big they were - before I saw one in person, but by the time I got my own, I'd already asked to see photos of other people with their dolls, so I had some sort of idea.
