Startled by doll sizes?

Jan 17, 2015

    1. I have a 5Star Tumnus, and even though he is an SD, to me he feels just right. When I hold him he feels very natural. I expected it to be the same with the next SD I got, which was a Mika girl by Miro Doll. Man, was I shocked when I took her out of the box for the first time. Even though she is the same height as Tumnus (62cm) she looks huge. She is very heavy and kind of awkward feeling. When I restrung her, it was a huge struggle because she was hard to handle. Even just dressing her is kind of a struggle. She doesn't have that comfortable feel when I handle her, the way Tumnus does.

    2. Are you, or have you been, consistently surprised by how big or heavy ball jointed dolls are, respective to their size (SD, MSD, Yo-SD, etc)?

Not really. My first was a 60cm and there weren't a lot of other kinds of bjds in 2004, when I got mine... And I'd never seen a bjd before... so I wasn't really expecting anything--and everything was kind of unexpected. But I just figured that was the way things were and nothing really surprised me after that.

The tinies always seem very tiny and light... even the msds...!

    3. the first doll I physically saw was at an anime convention, and she was a soom SD--I don't recall which, but she was gorgeous and purple. At first, It was definitely surprised, it's one thing to read a number on a screen and another thing entirely to see 60-ish cm of doll right there, but I think that means they'll be easier to customize, which excites me.

    4. I was startled at the size of my pukifee, she was so tiny and I was expecting something's little bigger haha but I love her non the less. I would love to see a smart doll in real life to see how big she is

    5. I remember when I saw a bjd for the very first time in a youtube video like....A REALLY LONG TIME AGO XD It was around 60-70cm (dont remmeber) and I was amazed at how big dolls could be! I didnt know what BJD's were back then....

    6. The 60cm+ dolls still trip me up on their sizes. I tried to get around it by taping pieces of paper together and drawing out a 60cm line and taping it to the wall where it connects to the ground so I have a constant reminder as to what to expect from them. It still catches me off guard when I see the boxes they come shipped in, in box openings though.

    7. When I was a kid in the 1950s we had vinyl dolls to play with, and there was a doll called Patty Playpal, who was the size of a real life 4 year old child. I never got one because they were too expensive, but I thought they were the coolest doll ever.

    8. i remember watching box opening videos thinking they weren't THAT big, then a measured out on a ruler to see how large MSD and SD13 dolls were and realised how tall they are...making them all the better i think :)

    9. I was shocked at just how big my YOSD boy was :D

    10. I bought an Iplehouse YID Freezia and knew she'd be big. When her boots came in from Iplehouse, however, I didn't realize she'd be THAT big. My husband and I looked at each other and just gawked. Finally he said, "How tall is she?" Then he measured out 60cm on our wall. Darn centimeters, they make you think it's so small... :P

    11. Geez, until you open your first doll, you have no idea what you're in for. I had watched dozens of unboxings to prepare myself, and I even got out a measuring tape to mark about how tall my BBD Nile would be (about to my knee.) Even then, when I unboxed him, I was still completely thrown for a loop, but you best believe I know what 62cm looks like.

Though, one thing they never really talk about in vids is just how heavy they are. I remember lifting the box when I got home and exclaiming, "damn, he's heavy!"

    12. I DEFINITELY get startled by the size of larger BJDs. I remember, when I was first shown pictures of BJDs, thinking "Oooh they're gorgeous little things!" I would look at SD sculpts all the time, I remember back then my favorite was Soom Cuprit.

Then I saw a Soom Cuprit box opening video, and balked at the size. Something about the size of SD dolls in general unnerves me. I loved playing with fashion dolls as a kid, even played with them as a teen with my little sister xD. So when I thought of doll, I thought of something that size. SD dolls remind me of things like mannequins and, dare I say, those infamous 'Real Dolls'! Because of their size, they're not really classified as dolls to play around with in my mind, but more of objects of utility. After all, there's gotta be something in that humongous body.. some locomotive servors and engines, I'm sure! :horror:

Of course, I haven't seen an SD-sized doll IRL. I hope to go to a dollmeet one day and cure my weirdness about giant dolls. Until then, I'm pretty happy with the MSD one I got right now. She still looks BIG to me, but in a much more manageable and non-threatening way x'D;;.

    13. I love the Iplehouse dolls but they are enormous! I used to have so many on my wishlist but then I bought some and found that they are just too much for me. I had several of the girls and one boy but sold them all because they're just too dang huge; not to mention HEAVY! I can't do anything with them but watch them stand there collecting dust.

    14. I was surprised at first, but my first doll is a slim MSD so I got used to him pretty quickly. I'm more worried about height differences, really, but when I get my fossegrim boy and the Supia Doll Jacob (fingers crossed!) one day, I think that'll be more to adjust to... It's mostly a space thing though. Any doll is a handful if you've nowhere to put him/her.

    15. I recently got my DZ Hong delivered and I was shocked by how big he actually is!
None the less I really love him very much.
But I have to search for some new accessories for him :sweat

    16. I remember when my big girl (on Angeldolls massive body :3) came in, and I was terrified. nowadays I'm super happy because I ony had to alter slightly the sleeve pattern and all the jackets, overcoats, etc I se - fit both - my sd13 boy and this girl <3 On the other hand, when I see on some people's photos dolls with heads as small as my thumb, i'm shocked they're able to sew for them, face up them, etc... seems impossible to me :O

    17. I had one in the early 60s that was over 3 feet tall, don't remember her name. I loved her but then I found Barbies. I could carry them with me everywhere but I still remember that huge doll who could walk if you held her hands. I'm glad I found BJDs because I still want to play with dolls and I like the big boys! Though I doubt I'll be buying a 90cm, 72cm is big enough.

    18. We can read what the heights are, but for me, it did not really hit me what the sizes were until some of my dolls arrived. And the weight. My Iplehouse EID male is so heavy. I now know to expect this, but it was a more than expected when I first got the large dolls.

    19. I have always went for the bigger dolls - the bigger, the better for me. So, yeah, color me weird that first, I found SD BJDs, small. That was when I first got into the hobby, which was 2009 - 2010: the biggest so far in the scales were the Sds, the Mecha Angels, and the Dollmore Lusions. I was looking for at least 36 inches, and golly, where was very few, with the aesthetic that I wanted. Also, I wanted a grown-up doll, and that ticked Lusions off the list, as their scales are toddlers. The lack of resin giants is the one that got me into bjd hiatus until 2013, when I rediscovered that the advent of larger BJDs was nigh. So I got myself a Trinity, and another offtopic 1:1 doll, and maybe another trinity on the way (hopefully).

So, yeah. I am never intimidated by size. I may be only 5'4", but I am strong as a bull and can haul heavy resin :D

    20. I can only imagine! My MSD girl was a bit heavy. She wasn't from Iplehouse, though. I can't wait to see my Sierra. Hopefully her size and weight won't be an issue for me since I already have another MSD from Dreaming Doll.
