Startled by doll sizes?

Jan 17, 2015

    1. I always have a hard time imagining height differences between various dolls. Like, will my 33cm and 28cm girls look weird next to each other? How does a puki compare to a yosd? Etc. Especially with dolls that aren't too stylized in shape, it's hard to find sculpts in different heights that aren't totally incongruous.

    2. I was a bit shocked back when I first found out how tall SDs are; it was hard to imagine! But ever since getting one I've been loving the size and weight of the dolls, it's just perfect and right!

    3. Oh man, have I ever!

I always knew I wanted SD dolls and I always knew they would be pretty big. When my first, Alexa, arrived - a 62cm Dollzone Gretta - I was a only little surprised, mostly by how heavy she was. She's not overly tall, though. I quickly got used to how big she is... but she's apparently kind of thin and delicate for an SD, it turns out. She has a fairly small head for this size doll (she wears 7/8 wigs) and she has small feet, thin arms, etc. So when my Impldoll Bella turned up... boy, was I in for a shock!

Bella is huge. I mean HUGE, in comparison, and she's only 3cm taller! She's heavier. She's all-round chunkier. It's actually part of the reason I've decided to reshell Alexa - she's meant to be short, but fairly chunky, herself and the DZ body just... isnt. All long thin limbs and exaggerated narrow proportions.

I actually have the opposite problem: I'm so used to my huge SDs that smaller dolls surprise me. I've since met a a few folks out in the real world who only have MSDs and I was shocked by how small and delicate they are! Karla-chan once handed me her Minifee Shushu, at Whitby and I was so horrified I was going to snap her just holding her! MNFs are so tiny in comparison to my giant taller-than-knee-high monsters!

    4. I was used to the size of my Pullips which where the same size as Barbies. I didn't expect my MSD girl which is a couple of inches taller to be so big. She's not here yet but I bought clothes for her first so she wouldn't be naked. When her clothes arrived I thought they were the wrong size because the shirt almost covered my entire hand. I bought her another shirt from another shop to make sure the seller didn't make a mistake. She didn't but I was still surprised at the size. I can only imagine the size of a SD.

    5. I was so surprised at how large 70 cm BJDs are. When I got my Iplehouse Roger, the size of the box shocked me and i was even more shocked at how large the doll was inside! I was used to my MSDs, seeing such a large and heavy doll was such a surprise to me. XD Sometimes I'm still surprised at how large he is....

    6. I'm a little unsure what to expect after hearing all these stories, but I have a lot of OT dolls (American Girls, porcelain dolls, etc) that I think are just a few inches shorter than BJDs, so I probably won't be too overwhelmed when I get my first doll, who will a Dollfie Dream.

I think someone already said this, but my American Girls are incredibly bulky and probably bigger around than most BJDs. But honestly the length might be what overwhelms me.

Either way, from the pictures of BJDs I've seen, they're incredibly beautiful so unless it was something ridiculous like an 80 cm doll, I think their beauty will make up for any overwhelming qualities they may have. XD

    7. Yeah. This dolls are much bigger than regular ones from the toys section XD
I was actually really amazed by the size of my Flora doll and kind of scared but then I got used to it and I love it!

    8. I was shocked by how small MSD dolls are the first time I held one at a meet. I'm into 60cm+ sized dolls, and had never seen an MSD or YoSD irl until that meet! I liked the 30cm doll I held, but the 45cm ones just seemed too small to me. I would prefer my dolls to be big and clunky and hard to handle for some reason lol xD

    9. I started with an Iplehouse kid then went to Iplehouse jid, not a big change, but the SD dolls are really big, it took me months to get used to the size and weight and the awkwardness of them, both of my SD's are Maskcat, I just love them, I will be selling my Iplehouse dolls soon, I prefer the SD dolls

    10. On my main wishlist right now I have 1 msd, and 6 SD's >+<. Though, not even seeing a msd in real life yet I'm slightily worried that when I do see SD's in real life (which I hopefully will soon) I'll find them too big and heavy. Though, to be honest, I'm actually more excited to see them than worried as I know i'll get used to the size eventually :). When I first unboxed my Pullip I thought she was ginormous! Though now I see her as quite small, well until I compare her to a MH :XD:. Also, being used to pullips and taeyangs is good when wanting SD's as the head sizes are the same :D.

    11. Yeah I can never envision size/length correctly ((I'm an atrocious driver because I have no idea what counts as proper distances)).

I thought it was nuts some of my boys are the length of my leg.

And I was like OMGKJDSHFSJF when I went to a doll meet and someone let me hold their Souldoll CHiron. So gigantic.

    12. I still get startled with the weight of the dolls, and their sturdiness. They are all so finely detailed you expect them to be really fragile and light.

    13. I only have one SD-sized doll now (FL Feeple60), and she is rather terrifyingly heavy compared with my MSD- and YoSD-sized dolls. I'm often afraid to pose her, because she feels like she will slam to the floor and break into a million pieces. But SD/MSD size aside, I'm also surprised sometimes at how different the weight and feel of dolls from different companies can be. My Fairyland dolls feel so light in comparison to some of my other dolls. My Angell Studio Vera Punk (MSD), on the other hand, feels really heavy, yet her joints glide in this weird, smooth way that is different from all my other dolls.

I went on vacation for a month this summer, and the only doll I took with me was my Pukifee. When I got home, all my other dolls seemed enormous!

    14. My sister recently got a dollshe craft venitu and I was shocked at the weight and size compared to my girl, who is an msd. He's beautiful though so it's really made me want a larger size.

    15. I remember when I got my first doll and I had no real idea of it's size because- well, I didn't plan. Though, while the size did catch me by surprise I believe the fact that he could pose so well 'shocked' me more. I remember standing him up and my Old man said "Damn, that's f-ing impressive!" Hahaha.

    16. I was pretty used to the slim MSD's because they are about the same height and size as most of my 16" fashion dolls and in fact I often use clothing from those dolls to outfit them. The SD's did surprise me a bit. Not so much in size. I have some Tonner character dolls and other big dolls that are similar in size. Some porcelains too, but the weight was definitely something I did not expect. The Tonner's etc they're just not as heavy. Resin is surprisingly so to me. I've gotten used to it though and over time I've come to prefer SD sized BJD's. I still have a few MSD size dolls but most of my collection is the 60cm sized dolls. I just seem to gravitate towards those more...

    17. I wasn't too surprised when I first received my SD 65cm boy. I got to see a few pictures of relatively sized people (compared to me) holding a 65cm doll, and I also measured him out a few times to understand where he would be in comparison to me. However one thing you really can't account for (I feel, especially if you haven't seen/handled an SD IRL) is the sheer presence that a thick and heavy resin boy has. They can feel very powerful, haha!

    18. When I first became interested in the hobby I though msds were the size of barbies LOL Seeing how big they are was a very pleasant surprise actually. That was until I realized that almost every sculpt I really love is an SD or sd+ and those are way to big for me! XD

    19. The IOS 80cm !!

    20. When I first starting looking at BJDs, I was most attracted to the 1/3 sizes. My first doll is 72cm, and now I've order two IoS 80cm. I think tinies are adorable but the largest dolls sync with me.
