1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Storing dolls in storage units in cold weather climates?

Jan 16, 2024

    1. hi everyone! i’m curious to know if anyone recently has had any experience with storing your dolls in storage units, specifically in cold weather (specifically New York!). We’re getting work done on our house so we need to pack and store EVERYTHING and store it for minimum of 2 months, and of course I’m most worried about my babies haha.

I have everyone’s boxes, and at the moment to make transport/organization easier they’re also all sealed in plastic bins. I plan to leave them in the bins in storage as well. My biggest question is though, how well do you all think they’ll hold up in the cold, and then eventually cold & moist weather? Is it mostly just sealant that i should expect to see any changes? The storage unit we have isn’t climate controlled, and jan-march is usually snow and near to freezing temps and then april is some snow & rain lol

If storing them there is the worst idea imaginable I believe I can probably bring them into our temp housing.

anyway, just looking for some advice or reassurance! *_*

    2. My own experience:
I kept most of my dolls in an unheated detached garage for about 3 months once in temperatures mostly at and below freezing up to maybe 40F some days during this time. The dolls were strung and had faceups and were just in doll boxes with padding stacked on the concrete.
I think that the sealant used on the faceup will make a difference in your results but my dolls were all perfectly fine in the end, no faceups were damaged. These dolls were mostly if not all painted with citadel varnish at that point. Over many years I have gathered that the citadel varnish is hardier to poor ambient conditions and I don't end up with problems like the occasional cracking I get from msc when the air us really humid where my doll is for a long time. Anyway, splitting hairs in my answer for maximum information. I also don't know about extremely cold temperatures (maybe lower than like 15F for any period?) But in general, a few months like that in the cold seemed to have left my dolls completely unbothered. So hopefully that puts your mind at ease a little bit.

    3. I would buy a lot of desiccant (silica gel packets) from Amazon or something to put in the bins to help with moisture and damp rid to put in your unit outside of the bins. Also be prepared to glue magnets back in when you unpack them because the cold might loosen the glue.

    4. That does put me at ease a bit! Logically i know that people have stored their dolls in cold weather but… y’know :sweat anyway, good to know. Most if not all (i have some company faceups) of the faceups use MSC though… ofc, i don’t know what the company faceup uses necessarily so we’ll see *_* but thank you; i think i might have been overthinking it.

I forgot about glue&magnets, thank you!!! And the silica gel is a very good idea. Even though it’s NY and it *should* be cold for the next two or three months, global warming likes to make sure we never know when our 3 feet of snow might suddenly melt…….

    5. I’m in Western New York, I know how cold it is and how wet the spring can be and the moisture can do damage quickly. We had stuff in a storage unit when we were in the process of buying a house and that’s where I learned about damp rid. I would put my stuff up on pallets so nothing is touching the concrete floors too.

    6. If it's possible, could you put the bodies in storage but keep the heads with you in the temp accommodation? I would assume the face ups are of the most concern and popping the heads together in a box hopefully won't take up too much space. :evilplot:

    7. I had two in boxes, protected with cushions and bubblewrap. There were in storage for awhile in the UK and they came out fine.:thumbup
