Taking doll to convention?

Jul 8, 2022

    1. Hey all!

I'm unexpectedly visiting a convention (Anime Expo Paris) on Friday that I hadn't planned on, so I didn't bring a cosplay. Because of that, and because my coursework is too heavy to pattern/sew a full cosplay in just a week, I decided that I'll bring a BJD with me instead (1/3rd scale boy). Any tips on bringing dolls to conventions? How do you transport them? I have a transport bag I used on the plane for him, but it wouldn't work well for a convention, since it's a plain black bag that covers him completely. I have options of using a large stiff paper shopping bag, or a black tote bag, but I'm open to other recommendations! Preferably something that is easy to carry, since I don't want to carry him around in my arms all night.

    2. I wouldn't use the paper bag, however stiff; handles aren't always strong enough to support the weight, and getting caught in the rain wouldn't be good for either doll or bag!

If the tote bag is sturdy, with good carry handles, and your doll can fit easily in it, that could work. Or, if you have a rollie carry-on size suitcase that you brought for general packing, you could use that to transport your doll temporarily. It might protect the doll better, and be easier to move about. Just be sure to not leave it unattended at any time.

    3. I've carried him in similar paper bags before (designer store-style bags, so not too flimsy) but it's a pain, and they're really big to tote around. I also found they mess up his wig more- probably with him rubbing against the side? I think the tote bag is probably my best option, since I want him to be visible. It's a little small, but if I curl his legs under him in seiza style, he fits fine and his head can just poke out of the bag. It also seems a bit less conspicuous, since I'll probably be out somewhat late in a big city and don't wanna get mugged obviously, lmao. I might give it a trial run sightseeing tomorrow since I want to take pictures of him.

    4. I would recommend having a small towel/cloth in the tote bag with him. You can wrap it around his legs or waist for support when he's poking his head out, or use it cover him when day light gets too bright for comfort in the afternoon

    5. I wonder if those ita-bags or something with a clear window would work well...my concern is that someone will reach into your bag and touch/grab without asking. I would prefer something zipped up, especially since conventions are crowded and people might bump into you. I use actual doll carriers whenever I take mine anywhere because I like the security they give my dolls. I have used tote bags in the past but only to places I know well/trust the people there.

    6. When I take mine to conventions, I usually have a tote bag with shorter straps so I keep it right on my hip and nobody can grab it easily. Most of the time, I'll just carry the doll in my arm, but when they start getting too heavy or I need both hands for something, in the bag they go!

    7. Good idea! Luckily he has a hat for his head, though I think I'll bring a microfiber cloth just in case of any mishaps.

I have thought about an Ita Bag (I want one anyway) but because he's 70 cm, I doubt there's one that would fit him. Maybe if he curled up in the fetal position, haha. I agree with CloakedSchemer where the tote bag I have is cloth and short handles, so I can keep him right by my side. I will give it a trial run today to see how bad using a tote bag is, and evaluate if I want to take him or not, since I'll have to take him to class day of the con so I can go right afterwards. Luckily, all of my classmates either don't care or think it's cool, so I'm not worried.

That's what I'm planning on doing! My tote bag has pretty short straps, so that should work well. I may spend some time carrying him in my arms, especially for any pics!

    8. Just a tote bag you have to carry sounds awkward and cumbersome to me. I would be more inclined to use a bag with a cross-body strap, so you could have hands free. Also that would prevent anyone from grabbing the bag and taking off with it.

A backpack worn on the front of your body is another option. They even have carriers like that for human babies, where the baby is against the front of the body and you have your hands free.

    9. I ended up testing out the tote bag on a trip with friends to Versailles, and it was a little annoying to carry around, and I kind of just ended up carrying him in my arms most of the time. I may look into a cross-body bag, but I don't have much time and I want to save money ^^; so the combo of tote bag and carrying him is probably my best option, unfortunately. But in the future, a cross body bag would be better!
