Taking the kids on an outing

Mar 27, 2014

    1. I didn't mean for photo shoots either several owners do that so it's not unusual, I meant taking them out for no other reason than because you want to. Sorry if that was not clear! :blush

    2. I've taken Vince out shopping in San Francisco before just because. The trip was a family one, just for the day, and I knew I'd be into at least one hobby store and one little toy store, and a couple other places that had things where I wanted to judge scale, and I wanted to get photos of him out and about. Sadly it was too windy to get pictures of him out with the cherry blossoms...

He stayed in his carrier in stores where I worried about having him out and when I was eating, but otherwise he was out 'looking around'/bonding with me. It was a lot of fun. Don't recall any stares, actually.

    3. I took Anora with me to a friend and we had to take the train to get there. Nori didn't fit safely into my bag so I carried her, to make sure she would travel safely with me- people gave me really strange looks! Almost no-one wanted to sit next to me, so it was kind of funny, I guess.

    4. My friends and I have been known to take our dolls out with us just for random shopping trips :) After years of being seen as the weirdos, we can't seem to care if people are talking about us anymore ;) mostly people just kinda give a weird look then shrug that 30-somethings are weird now ;)

    5. I took my first doll to work with me when I first got her, since my coworkers knew she was coming. I just sat her on my desk for the day. There were some "creepy doll" comments, but I'd expected as much. I haven't taken them out for anything but doll-related outings since, with the exception of trips to craft stores for props or supplies. I had Ayu out to check the scale on some doll stands at a Hobby Lobby and all I got were a few second looks.

    6. I have. I've taken my dolls to the park, to school, and sometimes I just carry my tiny or my floating SD head in my purse. I don't always take them out, but I do like to have one with me.

I get a lot of positive responses, actually, usually, "Wow, they're pretty." The most common negative comment is, "They're creepy."

I don't let this stop me though. I paid good money for these dolls and I'll do with them as I please.

However, I don't usually carry them around in my arms or anything out in public, I mostly take them out for better photo opportunities and some secret company.

    7. I frequently take dolls in to work and they vary in size from my smallest tiny (11cm) to my largest SD's (69cm). And there have been times when I've brought in both my biggest SD's to work. Granted, I work in a small (and very cool office) and don't have to worry about them even if I happen to go out on site for an hour or two. My co-workers like seeing the different dolls and they each have favourites. Clients have also commented on them when they have seen them.

I've also brought them to specific places (hotels, malls, etc.) because of the photo ops of the locations. Haniel (tiny) came with me on vacation to the Bahamas. Moswen and the Twins (an MSD and 2 tinies) came with me when I went on a vacation to Colorado. I brought... 4 MSD's with me when I went to visit my mom. I've taken pictures of my dolls in airports, on planes, trains, boats....

I typically don't care what people may think about my dolls when out in public. I have them out with me because I enjoy them and it's fun.

    8. I actually brought a doll to my grandparent's in my luggage with intention of showing them once, but ultimately I chickened out. Even though my grandma collects antique dolls I couldn't bring myself to do it. She collects them mostly for resale at a higher price in a few years, but since the doll was based on a character of mine and that side of my family has this belief that writers are 99% sure to fail and be 40 year olds living in a basement with their parents, and therefore is a waste of time, I was scared that they wouldn't like it just because it had to do with my writing. She actually called me a few days after because my dad asked her what she thought of the doll (He assumed she had seen it) and asked why I hadn't shown her it, and turns out she saw it in a totally different light than the rest of the family and actually loved her and her character... She runs a town-wide sale thing every month and dolls are a big thing there, and turns out there's quite a few BJD collectors in her town that want to see her now (Really wish I hadn't been so paranoid about it now >.<;)
      But yeah, that's the only time my doll has ever left the house for more than a few minutes. I wish I had the courage to bring them places like some of you do, oh my gosh. I'd love to bring dolls everywhere but I just don't have the guts ^_^;

    9. I brought my doll to my grandparent's house and to my office. Everyone who has seen Seth has loved him. I wish I could bring him out more but I mainly go to school and work. The only time I get to spend with him is at home when I'm working on stuff for him or taking photos.

I was supposed to bring him to my friend's house but then we decided to go to the mall and I didn't want to have to carry him around and I didn't want to leave him at my friend's house (I was afraid his puppy would find my boy)

    10. I don't dare to take my dolls on outings. I'm really far too scared of people's reactions -_-. I'm used to people thinking I'm a bit weird somehow - I used to get bullied at school because I read a lot and listened to classical music at home (!). And whereas I feel a lot better about myself and my quirks now, I really don't want a repeat of that now that I'm an adult. People are so judgemental. I'm proud of my dolls and I'll take them to doll events like meetings and fairs, but just for a walk? Eh. I'm not even brave enough to take them out to a park for photos (and I'd really, really like to pose my dolls in grass for once :p).

I have been taking dolls (well, one at a time) along on visits to my grandmother. I knew she'd like them, also because it gives her joy to see things that I make myself. She used to be able to sew and knit very well, and she loves to see me sew and knit too. Somehow I don't mind walking through an old people's home with a doll on my arm. The street - that is something else entirely. Except if we doll owners move in groups, like on walks to and from doll meeting venues ;).

    11. That makes me sad that so many people feel like they can't do all the things they want to do with something that brings them so much joy! :( The way I see it, I don't have children and probably never will, my dolls ARE my kids and I love them very much! :aheartbea but even if I just really enjoyed them it was my money that purchased them & I will enjoy them. Who cares what other people think? :P

    12. I take my dolls to meet only, pretty much. Once I took one of my Dollfie Dreams to see a movie while I was in Orlando for a convention. She's super light weight and fairly portable for a 1/3 sized doll. But I don't think I'll be taking my dolls on any casual outings any time soon. It's not because I give a flying flip what people would think, I'm just really paranoid about damage! Some people feel that they paid a lot of money for their dolls so they can take them all over the place and that's really cool. But in my mind I paid a lot of money for my dolls so I don't want them to get damaged or stolen. It happens.

    13. I just recently took my doll with me while i'm shopping in the mall. lol. i also shopped some items for him. xD

    14. Oh-- it's a bit different than from fun outings, but...

One time when I went to have some dental work done, I brought Billy with me. He's also been in my purse when I went in for a medical test once (he STAYED in my purse, too-- not because I was worried about him, haha, but because it was one of those things where you have to change into a little paper dress, and I wanted to spare his little virgin eyes. Still, because he's small enough to ride in my purse, it's sometimes nice to bring him along when I know I'm going to be really anxious. Either a tiny doll or a small plush that I can squeeze...)

Vince rode on the train with me once, too. He got to be out of his carrying case and on the seat with me most of the time because it was actually pretty roomy. I was kind of sick as it happened, so it was comforting to me to get to hold his little hand, and I thought he looked cute out and about, looking out at the scenery and all.

    15. I have brought some of my doll's fantasy parts to the store to size them for S hooks and things like that. But I don't bring my dolls out in public because I am afraid of them getting damaged, so I have no desire to take them out of the house just because. I feel that it would be more hassle than it's worth to try to fit a BJD in a shopping cart when I get groceries, carry it around the mall with my shopping bags, trying to be careful of my BJD while it's sitting at the table I'm eating at, etc. I'd be constantly worried about my doll!

    16. I've taken my dolls out many places but my favorites are the museum (fun pictures) and when I take Kazumi or Vala to the fabric stores everyone loves hearing about them, even ran into someone who's mother was sculpting a BJD and had not seen one in real life before so I was happy to let them look over my girl and check out her jointing system.

    17. That's the whole reason I got a yosd! So I could take it everywhere with me and show people like my co-workers what a bjd is because I mention them quite frequently! :kitty2

    18. I've only taken my boy out in public once, having him sit on the table with me and my mom while we were eating at Arby's. We didn't get any reactions, good or bad, that I noticed. But then I still look 12(I'm 21 :|), which is still kind of an exceptional age to still be playing with dolls around here, and I'm fairly short too, so, maybe that's why.

    19. The only doll I currently have is a feeple60 so not only the fact she would be difficult to take anywhere I would be scared of breaking her which is why I have ordered a pukifee so I can take her everywhere with me :)

    20. I haven't taken mine out, but my roommate does. She likes to snap photos of them outdoors. They have also been to a Ren Faire to sit in front of the foutnain and have a photo shoot. i had to work that weekend, so I was unable to go.
