Taking your dolls to school / college?

Jun 3, 2011

    1. I'd maybe bring a small BJD, such as a Yo-SD, that wouldn't take up too much space and that I could put away safely on a shelf or in a drawer, but I think my 70 cm boy would cause too much attention and also have greater risk of being accidentally damaged.

    2. I used to take my MSD into final exams that were essays. I write slowly (OCD and meticulous about my handwriting) and had been getting lower marks for handwritten essays. It was giving me anxiety about them to the point where I finally said to myself, "Okay, I'll go, but Shoujiki's coming too." So I brought him along, plopped him on my desk right in front of me, and every time I started to freak out during the exam, I just played with his hands a little or adjusted his head. It kept me grounded and focused, and I started doing much better on those kinds of exams. :D

So sometimes it works out okay.

    3. Just a curious question that popped into my head... I have a feeling there was at one time a thread like this but I haven't found it so I thought it'd be okay to make this.

For people in college, specifically those with numerous dolls, bjd's are a bit of a hassle in terms of all their stuff and sometimes their size, as well as their high-maintenence. So how does this go with your college plans, being in a dorm and what not?

If you have a few really big dolls, do you leave them at home for the sake of convenience? Or perhaps just bring one or a few choice favorites?

Does their stuff take up a lot of space, or do you just not bring it?

Does it bother your roomate/s? Do they request you to put them away? Are they scared/weirded out by them?

Thanks for answering/reading, take this down if it's a repeat as always heh. :aheartbea

    4. I used to bring all my dolls, but now I leave one at home. I put them in my bedroom so my roommates barely ever see them. They just sit on mu desk doing nothing until I'm in the mood for the world's most boring photoshoot since I only take pictures indoors due to lack of anywhere to go.

    5. I go to a college close by (and plan to keep doing so, because I honestly don't like the idea of living in a dorm with a roommate I don't necessarily know..).. and I have brought my dolls with me.. it's what most the students recognize me for in the Art Department , haha xD

But if I did live in a dorm, I would definitely bring them with me..

    6. I think there are some college & dolls threads, but I don't remember. Anyways, I could never leave my dolls at home. I go to college 1300 miles away from my home, and I only visit home once during the school year. It would almost feel like I don't even own it if I only got to see and play with it during the summer. I don't have anything larger than a mini, and though my dorm is small, I still have room for them. Depending on how many dolls you have though. I couldn't imagine having more than 5 or so in a dorm room.

As for living in a dorm, I don't have a lot of space for photoshoots, and I can't do faceups because I don't have the space or place to spray and dry. I don't view them to have any impact on my college life, they're not a distraction or anything. I wouldn't bring any huge accessories or furniture, because everything I get I'd have to travel (fly) 1300 miles with at the end of the year, so all of that stays at home.

My roommate didn't like dolls as a child, but she doesn't mind mine. Now, I don't leave my doll out all the time, and certainly my roomie has never seen them naked. I do tend to put them away when my roommate comes back.

    7. zekarmisama, sketchy ritsuka, knightjeran, thanks so much for your answers, it sounds like everyone just loves their dolls too much to leave them, and to me that's how it should be ^^

Laoky, thanks! I guess this is the end of this thread, please excuse me for not searching enough :sweat

    8. I only bring my doll on "block days" when I only go to 3 classes(2 being art ones) so I can safely leave her in the hands of the art teacher while I'm away for a period. Lovill loved having Rong on the desk with her, babysitting she called it. I would never bring her on a 1-6 day. I've had a few photoshoots with dolls at school before.

    9. I bring a doll to my university every once in a while. It's usually if I'm taking a doll somewhere after class and I don't want to leave it in my jeep. Whatever doll I bring will rarely come out of the bag and if it does, it's by request. All the folks that work in the costume shop with me know I collect dolls so sometimes they'll ask to see the new ones. The scenic designer of my theatre company at school likes to see what new I'm doing with them too. I think he's, honestly, one of my dolls' biggest fans. He's a really artsy type and I think he sees them like that.

    10. I'd refrain from bringing dolls with me to school, either into the classroom or into a dorm room with others. I would, however, bring them with me if I moved to my own apartment near campus, of course, since I'd be living alone.

When I was a kid people would disrespect other personal property I brought to school (like CDs, for instance); I learned never to bring anything in my schoolbag that I wasn't willing to lose.

    11. I would have never taken a doll to high school if I owned one at the time. Besides the fact that my classmates were idiots and had no respect for other peoples property, my taste in dolls tends to lean towards SD sized BJD's, which are kind of distracting and harder to hide.

I wouldn't bring them to college with me for the same reason. my University doesn't have dorms and I currently live with my parents, so I don't have to worry about stupid roommates either.

    12. I have all of my dolls + floating head at my university, and I have to say that with the ability to tuck them away in what looks like luggage (thank you Dollmore for your rolling suitcase!) and living in a dorm where I can close my door, I've never had a single problem. Then again, I am incredibly shy and self-conscious most of the time, so I pretty well never bring them out. They stay in here and nobody sees them most of the time. :sweat

    13. I'll be going to college in a few months, and I fully plan on having my bjd with me. I didn't pay that kind of money on her for her to sit at my parents house

    14. I never took them to high school when I was in it. While it would have been nice I was too afraid I would get knocked into a locker by accident or that I would trip and break my doll! Now that I am in Uni I do take them to the dorms with me because I am afraid of what will happen to them if I leave them at home. However, I'm starting to run out of space here. *_* I think if I get any more dolls I will have to leave some at home or sell some.

    15. I really wouldn't dare to do that. People at my high school are pretty nice but I'm not really sure how they would react to me bringing a doll. Especially 1/3 one. It's easier for smaller (especially the tiny) ones. If I was still in my basic school, then why not. My classmates knew about my obsession with dolls and have seen my collection so they would be pretty interested themselves. They were the ones who decided to make plush toys week at our class few years ago, anyway. My current classmates don't know much about my hobbies unless they read my it on my FB profile. We aren't really close, anyway. Besides, basic school times are over and now I don't see my class much. We go to different subjects with different people so it would be very hard to keep my doll with me all the time and keep eye on it. Not to mention teachers. Doll could be used for photography class but my teacher would disagree. Other subjects are out of question as well. A small doll would pass without problems in some subjects while during others I would probably need to keep it inside my bag.
In short - I wouldn't do that. Too risky.

    16. I got my first doll last year, while I was a sophomore in college. I have a single room so I don't really have to worry about room mates and if anything were to happen to the dorm my father has renter's insurance which I should be covered under. That being said, while I am in the dorms I will have to stick to dolls no bigger than the SoulDoll Vito's because my room is about the size of your average office. Right now I just have an msd-sized doll from 5*doll and a fantasy doll tiny Glen, with another fantasy doll tiny on the way, so my current collection does not take up much room.

    17. I have my dolls at university with me, this is where I was when I ordered them too and they came to the residence desk (where thankfully I work so it was relatively smooth process getting them here via courier) to be picked up, but thankfully my roomate is my best friend so she would never in a million years dream of harming them or stealing them. She also loves them to death and is wanting to get a doll herself one day. As for bringing them to school, I have brought one of my dolls with me to the library to study once or twice, just for company. He is an SD, but he's not too inconvenient, and I had friends in my last Japanese class who got me into dolls so when mine came I brought him to class with me. My Japanese class is pretty cool and we were all friends, there were actually guys who liked them, even though they said they were a little creepy, it was all in good humour. I don't think I'd ever bring one to one of my other normal type classes though, like english. It would be a distraction I am sure for the prof and I see no reason to have everyone stare at me.

When we have fire drills (usually in the early morning or late at night) here in the residence my dolls go right outside with me, since I can never be sure if it's a drill or it it's an actual emergency, they never say over the intercom so I don't risk it. I get some reallllly strange looks from people, but I don't care though in that instance though. I've scared some people with them before during drills, we were going to the bathroom in the study hall place across the street where a lot of people go during the drillsbecause it's close and warm, and we were in the bathroom there and some girl walked around the corner and saw my dolls and did a little startled jump and gasp. We laughed it off, and after she asked me about them.

So...yah hope that answers your questions.

    18. I go to a art university so it is relatively easy to deal with having my doll present. I can deal with having to take care of him as well as the work load our school places on us such as projects that require a min of 82 hours just in foundation studies.
He is relatively big at 63cm but he is my only one. However if I was to get more I would definitely chose only one to bring with me. His things don't take up a huge amount of space and my roommate is not disturbed or frightened by them(actually now she wants one XD) but I did make sure she understood that if she touched him without permission she better sleep with one eye open.

    19. I am still saving up for my first doll, and just graduated college in fall. I wouldn't leave a doll out during a lecture, as it is disrespectful to the professor. It would be like reading the newspaper while the professor is trying to talk: your attention is still elsewhere.

Most of my art professors were "out there", and I could see them thinking that these bjd's are SUPER neat. Furthermore, a lot of our drawing and painting classes had several projects where you had to bring a small object in to use as a model. I would have loved to use a doll as my model! I've also left a few expensive supplies in our art room before, tucked away of course, and never had them stolen. But, you just never know. Discretion is key! (note: I would never leave my doll alone ANYWHERE that isn't my house.)

As for high school...most of our students are/have been open and honest. I did my student teaching there last spring, and was pleasantly surprised at the various amounts of clubs to join: Scrap-booking, a Hunger Games LARP, anime club, gay/straight alliance, and two different art clubs. I'm sure that if the hobby got big enough there would be a BJD Club. (How cool would that have been!?!) :)

Still, as a future teacher I would expect that students keep dolls under their desks, in their backpacks, lockers, or better yet, at home. There are still deviant youngsters out there who wouldn't think twice about stealing something just to hurt you. Or worse yet, someone may maliciously try to hurt your doll! Teachers expect their students to pay attention, and they don't want to see someone emotionally hurt because one of their dolls was stolen or damaged.
