Taking your dolls to school / college?

Jun 3, 2011

    1. When it comes to school I always believed that you should only bring things that you don't mind getting lost or broken, so I personally wouldn't bring anything I was remotely attached to to that place. It's a better safe that sorry approach I suppose.

Though I'm not sure about college/university, people are meant to be more mature there so I think it'll be alright, but it's not something I would want to do just in case someone thinks of a funny 'joke' to pull on your stuff.

    2. I brought my dolls with me both years I lived on a college dorm. The first year, I was lucky enough to have a suite with a private bedroom, so they spent all of their time there. The second time I roomed with another doll owner (which I will say right now was an absolute blast) so even though we shared the same living/sleeping space, I was 100% comfortable keeping them at school with me. If neither of those had been the case I would have kept them home for certain, as much as it would have pained me to do it.

    3. I wasn't into BJDs back when I was in college (honestly, I didn't know a thing about them and I'm old enough that I don't think they were much of a thing back then, either), but honestly, given the types of roommates I had, I don't think I would have wanted to take them with me during the times I had roommates. My first one was a thief (she stole some notebooks of mine and left them in a department I never visited, and deleted all the messages on the answering machine of them trying to get them back to me; I didn't know about that part until after she moved out). Second was a psycho with no respect for personal space. Third really, really liked messing with my stuff, then hiding it when she broke things. Fourth... she probably would have been okay, at least, but at that point I wouldn't have trusted anyone around them.

Once I decided I'd had enough of roommates (those four cycled through over the course of only two years), I probably would have felt more comfortable with having them on campus with me, but definitely not during the time I had roommates. And I'd suggest to anyone thinking about it to get a good feel for their roommates, or have a good secure spot to keep their dolls.

    4. I've gotten my first BJD not long ago but I still don't have any courage to take them to the campus :D And because I live alone in a private rent house, so I haven't shown them to my college classmates yet, only few close friends have seen them when they visited me.

    5. I've had my books stolen while I was studying one day (turned around and looked back and they were gone). There is no way I would bring a bjd with me to college. I especially didn't bring things I liked with me to high school either. Overcrowding would have made it too easy to knock something over on accident. That's not including the jerks who would mess with you for the sake of messing with you. I love drawing and I had a guy come up and scribble all over something I was working on while I was leaning over my sketch pad.

    6. I'm a very lucky ducky in the sense that I'm starting my first year at Uni in less than 3 weeks, and I'm getting a single dorm :3 I don't have to worry about my non-existing roommate being freaked out by my dolls because my dolls will be my roommates! Personally, I want to take them with me, because after all the time and effort (and money) put into them, I don't like the idea of leaving them at my parents' house, naked in their doll boxes :/ I would rather them be in my dorm room, under my bed naked in their boxes so that I can play with them, while still keeping them safe.

    7. I'm a senior in high school, i wouldn't bring my doll to my school because i have seen people break things i didn't think they could break, when I go to college if I move into the dorms I would most likely bring them since they're important to me and help with my art so yeah.

    8. I took my first doll to school once. In .. middle school? High school? (I don't know how the grades work in other countries XD I was 17 or so let's keep it on that) I studied in an art school so she managed to get lots of interest from my classmates and the art teachers. (This way I also convinced one of my friends to buy her own bjd :XD:) But when we had a theory teacher she was scared of her and told me to put her back into her box immediately. That school wasn't a place to bring toys. Some of my classmates started to defend my doll against what that teacher said :sweat I just put her back in the box thou. If it distracted the teacher from giving her lecture..

    9. I have mine in college. The rule with my roommates was 1: Don't touch them ever. 2: Deal with it.

I bought all the toilet paper for us. You gotta use things that that to your advantage. I am considerate though. I had one roommate who wanted me to throw a sheet over them before bed, and another who didn't want me to take them apart or have blank heads in the room while they were there. I obliged.

    10. I worked 2 jobs and was a triple major for my 4 years of college. My dolls stayed at my parents and honestly I lost touch with them.

It wasn't until I graduated and moved out that I pulled my first girl out. It was like love at first site... again! Now my hobby has exploded and it's much more enjoyable the second time around.

If you're going to miss them, bring them. :)

    11. I don't have my first doll yet, but my friend brought her new tiny to school and let me borrow it for the day. I guarded it with my life to make sure I didn't lose it!

    12. I took my dolls when I got in college, my college also was so far away from my hometown, I went home at one in per year, so I just took all dolls lol

    13. I ever bring my doll to school, to have a doll meet there, and one of the teacher have one too! And the people in my class are open minded so they're okay wit that

    14. I would take a bjd to school, but I already been called "pathetic" for like any type of doll, and just recently got asked how I "could like anything so creepy." I wish we could see eye to eye but that's probably not going to happen, so I just accept their opinions and move on. Can't waste my breath on everyone right?:) Next quarter I may take my doll to art with me though ^.^

    15. Nope, not gonna bring my girls. It's a hassel to pack them along with my belongings for every vacation. I have enough stuffs to worry about as I am.

    16. No, I don't think I would take my doll to school. I guess it would be different if I was in a dorm or something, but I'm not so I don't see a reason to do so.

    17. Update: I've brought one of mine to my dorms and rarely let him out of his box unless I want to show him to somebody or just play with him. Other then that, I've just kept him in his box because I'm not sure how my roommate(a non-bjd person) will react to my boy...

      It's been going well otherwise..

    18. I'm a college student, and I've been bringing my bjds to school with me since 1/2 way through freshman year. (Before I brought other kinds of dolls--action figures, etc.) I haven't brought one to classes, mostly because I worry about damaging the doll in my backpack, but I have brought them outside during my free time for some fresh air. Bringing a doll to college isn't really that different from having one at home. The only thing that I would caution, is to make sure to have a place to put the doll that is safe and out of the way while you are separated from your doll--It's best to only allow others to touch them with supervision. (I keep mine in a box in my chest of drawers in my room.)

Also, depending on your university, you may have people with keys to your room or common area to clean (bathrooms, common areas, etc.) or repair damage. They may not tell you when to expect them. You may have a similar issue with friends of roommates. This is why it is best to keep them somewhere out of the way. If you were super worried about it, you could probably keep them in a filing cabinet with a lock.

    19. I took my dolls to my office cubicle some days. Does that count?

    20. I go to a school locally (yay, community college), so I don't have dorms and whatnot to worry about. I've thought about bringing one of the tinies with me for fun. I trust the other students in my classes. The ones who seem obnoxious pay me no heed, and the ones I do talk to are nice. While I don't think they would all be excited or awe-stricken, I think they would at least be respectful. I think some of the artsy fartsy kids in my Comics class would like them.

I never take one. Frankly, I'd be worried about carting them around all day. You never know what could happen. And my classes are pretty brain-intensive, so the doll would just be sitting there ... creeping people out ... heh heh. If a project came up that I could use the doll for, that might be a different story, though. For now, I can see them when I get home after classes and that's good enough for me.
