Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Telling Your Parents *For Younger Members*

Sep 5, 2009

1. uh great question.. my parent were so unlikely that i was going to buy my first BJD, because it's a waste of huge amount of money for them. but i made them involved in it step by step and now i think the accept my hobby, but still think that it costs too much..

2. here at last summer i wanted soo badly a abjd, so i asked my father about money, but the same answer always came "go get a job so you can use it to whatever you want" so i did (luckly) get a job, and earned alot money to get 2 dolls, where following i got 18 and have to start at my education where automatic got a internship where i earn alot of money^^ so not much convincing from my parents but they say that i should stop using sooo much moneys on dolls XP

3. I moved out, lol.
I had liked BJD's for many years, but never had the money.
Once I moved out I got more money for my school from the goverment and two months later I had saved up to buy my first doll.
My parents don't like them, but nowadays I buy them with my own money and they don't really have a say in it anymore.

4. Ummm...I didn't really. My parents understood that it was my decision to get this doll, and since I was paying for half of it, anyway, they just let me. And then when I ordered my second they couldn't really say anything, either, because I was paying for ALL of him with my own money. I think they just prefer to let me do my own thing because they know I wouldn't do anything really irresponsible. They recognize that this is something I love, and they leave me to it.

5. I'd probably say that the easiest way to let the 'rents let you buy a BJD is if you earn the money yourself. If you do that, you're showing just how much you want that doll. ^_^

6. My first doll was a gift, so I didn't have to tell my parents, lol. They don't really know about my second one, but if I told them about it, they'd roll their eyes and just call me dumb for spending money when I should be saving it to pay off loans. I'll just tell them it's for study purposes so I can start up my online company :)

7. My parents are awesome, my mom is totally supportive and gives me doll money on occasion, and my dad doesn't really care but he doesn't give me a hard time. My brother on the other hand thinks they're really creepy, lol.

8. I spend 3 years convincing them I really want a doll and finally I got their approval by making my personal best record last winter ^^
I do speedskating~
I made a sweet deal in my opinion. I just asked 30seconds before start that if i make a PB then can I have the doll and mom said yes. I improved my previous time by 5 seconds. Talk about motivation!

9. Woot congrats Krizzeys.
And thanks for this thread. :3 It's helped me out a lot.

10. Me? About 2 years ago, i showed my mom about these dolls. At first, she had a smile on her face and she said that they're so beautiful. But when she looked down at the price, her smiled turned into frown. It's too expensive for me. We have to be pratical yada yada then I suddenly came up with an idea. I told her that she could make it as a graduation gift. She agreed. After two years, actually now, he's on his way :D

11. It wasn't so hard to convince my mom since I'm living on my own and she knows I'm responsible with my money. Also, I came at it from the angle of making clothes for them, which she can appreciate being a former seamstress, and kept the prices very vague for initial explanation ("there are smaller ones that go for less than $100, and then the larger special editions and rarer dolls can go upwards of $1,000"), keeping the emphasis on the lower end, which is fine because I'm getting smaller ones at least to start out.

12. Hmm, well it wasn't very hard for me to tell my mom I wanted a BJD. I like to draw, A LOT and I always create new characters. After seeing a BJD from volks that I really liked I based a character off of her. My mom loved that character and thought she was cute. That was a year or two ago. I'm still into BJDs and my mom thought this wasn't a short phase I was going to go through. She knew I was serious about it so she let me get my first. I was paying for all of it (or so I thought) and once then she told me she would help me pay for it too! She was very accepting of the idea of getting a BJD. She is still a little uncomfortable about the price of BJDs (and I've already found another one I want) but then again, she liked dolls when she was younger.

My mom actually collect dolls from the 1800s. They are in storage now, but she knows what it's like collecting dolls. Some of the dolls she has are worth thousands of dollars, so a 300 dollar doll is nothing compared to hers. I guess since she knew how it felt to collect dolls she was all for it. She doesn't want me to get another doll so soon though >.<

13. I've been having some trouble breaking it to my parents I want a doll, and I'm turning 15 this year. If this has been asked already sorry! I looked around and couldn't find it anywhere, so this is my question: how did you break it to your parents you were saving your money to buy a doll? And what was their reaction? Thanks everyone!:)

14. Look harder.

15. I conviced my mom (not my dad) basically if I get I job I can get one! Yay! If I told my dad he would think I was crazy.

16. I told my mom about the dolls and showed her pictures and she encourages that I use my money on my own. She wants me to be more independant (which is all fine by me) and decide what is the best way to spend my earnings. Also as long as I let her make sweaters for my future doll, she's fine too. :D

17. I'm in proccess of buying my first doll (well, head really, but I'll find it a body ASAP) after just getting my mom's permission. ♥

When I first mentioned these dolls she was really against it, especially after hearing the price, but finally she gave up when I insisted that it's my money, money that I earned myself, and that I know what I'm doing. She still thinks it's waste of time and resources but well, that's exactly my opinion when it comes to some stuff she spends her money on... (And her "but I have a job" argument is not valid when I can (finally!) say "yeah I've worked too to earn this money and I should have the right to spend it on whatever I want"...)

So yeah, my viewpoint is that I can do whatever I want with my own money as long as I got enough so I can get by - and happily, I just finally managed to convince my parents of that. ♥
