That ONE item you just about never want from a fullset

Oct 12, 2024

    1. I thought this might be fun, but who here has that ONE item that might come with a fullset that you just about never want? One item you're likely always willing to split, sell or otherwise?

Or, if you don't buy fullsets, what's the one doll accessory that you're always disinterested in?

For it, it's hats. No matter how much I love the way one of them might look, I'll probably always sell it. I'm a completionist with fullsets (especially my Fairyland ones) but if there's any sort of hat, bonnet or headwear that isn't a crown or a fantasy part it's definitely getting split off.

Another thing for me is props. Super hit or miss. I want to love them, but I know I'll never use them :doh

Bonus question, are there any items that are typically in fullsets that are so hit or miss for you, they can easily be a turn off from the set?

    2. I bought only one fullset and it did have an item that i didn't like. The doll was Impldoll Nicolas and he had a skull chest piece and his body was sprayed with black paint around it:horror:

This thing really boxes him in a few creepy looks, but thankfully impldoll had an option not to get it.

    3. I'm very disenchanted with pleather pieces or accessories with fullsets. Knowing how quickly they begin to wear and disintegrate is such a hassle. They make such a mess too. I'm starting to just give them away. :/

    4. For me, it's usually the wig that gets tossed aside. I'm picky about hair.

    5. I don't buy doll full sets, but I did buy outfit full sets often in the past.

Hats were also always the thing that ended up in storage right away. I remember the old Dollheart days and how they always had to include some ugly head accessory
Nobody in our group liked them, and nobody ever wanted to buy them either.

Otherwise, if I'd buy doll full-sets I know that wigs certainly would not stay (I prefer angora for mine) and eyes most likely too (picky about color/type).

    6. Pleather should be a crime :...( I refuse to buy anything with more than a belt of pleather now. They last maybe a year or two in the best conditions and that's it. It's such a shame and it feels dirty to get charged full price for it.

Hair can make or break an entire sculpt for me, let alone the look. I totally understand the picky-ness!

    7. Eyes. Whether they're the cheap "random" set of toss in eyes or specific for that doll I rarely end up using them. Especially if they're glass. Most of the glass eyes I've come across have pretty high domes and I really hate the way high dome eyes make the eyes look like they're looking in different directions when you view the doll from the side.

    8. Hmmm...interesting question! I'm definitely in agreement on the faux leather stuff (it's just a waste of money!).

I don't actually buy full-sets, but I do buy clothing for dolls and sometimes hats come with them - I like hats! They can be a bit same-y, but I figure anything with decent components can be deconstructed and used to make something else.

I'm choosy about wigs and eyes, too, so they would probably get stored.

Other things I don't like? Eh, I don't really care for frilly arm-band-like accessories. Kind of "fake sleeves" if you know what I mean. I'd prefer an actual blouse/sweater.

Also, I don't care for purses. Mori-style satchels, backpacks, etc. are great, but nothing like a designer purse or similar.

    9. I don't buy fullsets unless it's the same price with it as without (like secondhand or something), but the thing that comes with dolls that I always find useless is eyes! I have no idea why, but I feel like the majority of default eyes are the wrong size, usually much too big, or the doll needs small irises and the defaults are huge. What is up with that? The default eyes are often poor quality (which is fine, they're free, I don't expect high end), or a color I'd never use, as well. I'm going to buy my own eyes in the end anyway, so now I just have a box of default eyes I'll never use.

In clothing sets, it's usually the fake sleeves like @StellMarigold mentioned, or socks. Unless they are really distinctive and make the set look complete, I am never going to use those.

On the other hand, one thing i love to see included with a doll is extra string! I am guaranteed to need that at some point, even if it's for a different doll. I usually even toss a couple extra sets of string into the cart when I order a new doll.

    10. I don't buy dolls as fullsets and I have very rarely ended up with clothing sets, too. Sometimes I do get tempted to buy a fullset of clothes, however - but there are always things that either turn me off or I'd only like to have one item and don't want to hassle splitting the rest. I'd only buy if it seemed like a set I could mix and match with other items I already own.

I agree with head accessories - I like animal ears, horns, proper hats and such, but simple headbands with a ribbony-flowery add-on don't really add value to me, same for armbands, legwarmers etc - I always feel like they are filler rather than nice items to have. What I do like seeing are full garments (aka shirt and a dress, not dress and separate sleeves) and shoe options (especially if it's a fullset including a doll! It's so weird to me if the company pics have shoes/wig and the fullset comes without). I am also more inclined to buy if the garments are something I can't make myself (detailed work, not basic casuals, or including specific resin-cast elements for instance).

    11. I almost never buy full sets. One of the aspects I like best about my dolls is putting together outfits myself.

For full set dolls, specifically, it's always the wig that just doesn't do it for me and/or the shoes.

For outfits, I only buy the dealer made full sets if there aren't options to buy the pieces separately. I rather dislike the little accessories tbh. I know they make the set feel complete but it just ends up being filler junk that drives the price up and gets tossed aside for me. Jewelry, especially the broach accessory that every single set seems to have, feel so pointless.

    12. I almost always like everything that comes with full sets. One thing though was a full set I got that had a tech gear outfit with a face mask and I never used the face mask as it was black material and didn't want to stain that part of the doll. If I had to pick something I never want in full sets, it would be the eyes as I always have a nice pair handy and the ones that come with the set are usually weird and ugly colors.

    13. I'm also on team "rarely buys fullsets" and "doesn't use fullset eyes."

My only fullset dolls have been limited Dollfie Dreams and Volks is pretty infamous for having flat, uninteresting anime eyes. They just don't have the same "alive" feeling that artist eyes tend to have! All of my vinyl girls get upgraded to nicer eyes down the line.

    14. Same for rarely buys full sets. Like, it needs really cool accessories like armor.

But I can not bond if it already has a face up. It's not mine. Not my vision, not my really my choice. It's like, I paid for something that's not even mine. It's a shame really because they can still be so beautiful and I am not very good yet.

    15. I’ve been in this hobby for a very long time, and I do occasionally buy fullsets to add a bit of diversity to my own faceups and sewing. I find a little change up in the crew is nice. But for me, it’s those darned random eyes they send!:doh Eyes are so important to my characters, I’m very picky about them. And I swear by now I have an entire bag full of pale yellowish caramel glass eyes I’ll never use.:barf

    16. I’ve only once ever bought a fullset and there wasn’t really anything in it that was a problem but I do agree with the ‘pleather’ remarks wholeheartedly, that would definitely put me off.

Another thing I’ve seen in some fullsets that I’d avoid is real fur, I’ve seen rabbit, mink and what looks like fox used quite recently in fullsets by some of the major and well known BJD companies. That’s a big ‘Nope’ for me, I draw the line with purely fur-trade items.

    17. I love full sets but it's always the wigs and eyes I toss back in the box.
I really don't like the wig texture unless it's a soy or yarn type fibre or mohair type. The eyes I get tend to be dark brown or yellow which is not my vibe either. I don't split them off though, always keep them with the box and coa so I have the full set original because lets face it, life can get hairy and sometimes I need to part with them and the having the original to pass on is important to me. Plus I always feel that the value is better if it's all original. I agree with Blodeuwedd, anything with real fur automatically gets a no from me.

    18. It's not so much not wanting it but I hate it when full set clothing take hours to put onto the doll. I have chronic pain and I distinctly remembered that it took my husband and I to dress our Volks DDdy 2B like 4 hours. We took frequent breaks and we were determined to get her fully dressed because her outfit and props are her character from the game and all that. The clothing was so precisely made that even being like a millimeter or two off wouldn't fit her. Once she was in her outfit, it was a thing of beauty and amazing engineering, but dear gawd...it took me out. I needed the rest of the day to recover and possibly the rest of the week. No joke. I think we had another doll that took 2 or 3 hours but that 2B shall always be the one that nearly broke us with exhaustion.

Oh, and gloves. Love the way they look in pictures and on the doll once you can get them on, but same thing...such precision to put them on. I think we ended up having one of our dolls wear one glove but we gave up with the other glove because it took a long time with lots of care to put it on correctly and not to break any fingers. Haha. I wouldn't sell them as they are part of the whole ensemble, but I cringe when I see gloves are part of the full set package and I hope the hands of the doll have fingers which allow easier accessibility into the glove.

    19. In the beginning I didn't get fullsets to save money. IF the full set mostly fits my character I'll grab it, if not, I'll give it a miss. 99.9% of the time full set eyes are wrong for my character. I have an annoyingly 'samey' collection of eyes in a bag with wigs that also came with sets and were not right, or wigs I bought that were not as 'right' in person. Now I'll only get a full set if most of the components will fit the doll they come with or the character of 1 of my other dolls!

'pleather' <-- I never understood this until the last few years. I've been collecting about 10 years now. and all my dolls and thier stuff are kept in boxes to keep them safe! I have noticed that a lot of the shoes and belts and just... disintegrating! I thought it was something I have done... stored them wrong? but now I understand... their 'life' is just rubbish lol Makes me so sad as I LOVE some of my doll's shoes. The fullset ones that came with my Soom Trachy/Lami specifically. and to see that they are starting to have tiny parts of the 'leather' peel away from me just looking at them is a little disheartening :< But I'm glad its not something I've done, and that this is just something that happens I guess :<

and omg! some outfits are made of real fur?!?!!? OMG why?!!? I'm horrified O.O

    20. I agree with the hats. But I hate hats in general. Unless it's a pirate set but I don't have a pirate set. (Yet)

Pleather- I hate it so much. It's dry were I live so sitting in a box it doesn't crumble but after lots of use it does. And it feels like I am littering and the creation of the stuff is extremely bad for the environment. You also can never wash it unless you want to put more micro plastics in the water. I don't understand why they can just upsycle real leather. (Or use the leather made of fruit but not sure how long it lasts)

I don't mind props but I don't use them. I find when I buy a full set I don't want to split anything. Because I want to keep the full set even if I don't use it all. It also help keeps the value of the doll. Not that I plan to sell them, but you never know!
