The "cross-eyed" look

Feb 26, 2015

    1. I'm not a fan of it at all, I want my dolls to have "correct" positioning. I don't care what others do wit their dolls.

My biggest complaint is that some sculpts are just so hard to get the eyes looking even! Like when the eyes aren't a perfect oval, but smaller at the inner corners or outer corners, so a sideways glance just looks like the pupils are different sizes, or one eye is open more than the other. I adore my Iplehouse Mars, and his eyes are positioned correctly, but due to his eye holes being slightly uneven, his eyes look poorly positioned from some angles.

    2. I don't care for the cross-eyed look myself, but to each their own. It is not my place to tell them what I feel the correct positioning should be, since it might be their preference or an attribute of their character.

    3. Personally non of the sculpts I like would look right with it.
Also I do think it's a difficult look to pull off. You have to have just the right sculpt and character for it.

    4. It looks pretty hilarious to me, but it can be cute in a derptastic sort of way on some dolls. To each their own.

    5. I think it looks cute on the tiny ones.

    6. I don't do it on purpose, but I'm not the best at eye positioning. ;)

    7. I did it with one of my OT dolls! Just for a while. It's so derpy and cute! :D

    8. I think it depends on the sculpt, some of them can still look cute while cross eyed. I've also heard some sculpts can be difficult to position the eyes

    9. I don't think I have ever intentionally positioned eyes cross-eyed, but some eyewells are difficult, and unless you are using silicone eyes, you can't just squish them until they work. So, on occasion some of my dolls might be very slightly cross eyed, but if I am having that much trouble, I will generally go for a side glance instead if I can make that work with the eyes and eyewells of that particular doll.

    10. It can be cute when done correctly, and I don't mind it if it isn't very extreme.
What really drives me nuts is when they eyes look in different directions. :D

    11. I think it can look pretty cute on some dolls when its very slight. Particularly the large eyed Volks girls. It gives such a dorky cuteness :D

    12. It can be rather cute depending on the sculpt >u<;; or maybe I just like odd things...

    13. I think its cute on some girls, especially on the anime based dolls like Dollfie and Smart Doll. Danny Choo intentionally puts his Mirai dolls eyes cross eyed because he prefers them that way. So on a doll like that, the less realistic ones, I think it looks cute! More realistic dolls, less so.

    14. I think for some of the kids it can be a cute look. I do not have it on any of my bjds but have Wilde Patience dolls and love all the silly ways their eyes move.

    15. Thank you! My Ante has gone through several pairs of eyes, but she manages to look cross eyed in all of them, from certain angles. So I end up doing her eyes, thinking it is okay, and the next moment, it looks like her eyes are off again. >.<

    16. It depends on the positioning. If the eyes are angled upward a bit, and drawn a bit to the center, then it can look rather cute. However, if they're straight-forward or downturned, and severely angled in like the doll's focusing intently on the tip of his or her nose? It looks awkward at best, honestly, and I want to open the doll's head up and adjust the eyes to make them less out of place.

    17. cross eyed seems a little cute for me but what really seems cute is cockeyed where like one eye is just going off in its entirely own direction, I've made characters with that and drawing them a lot kind of made me really love that on some characters. I have yet to see a BJD that has cockeyed eyes however

    18. To me it looks silly a bit

    19. You have just described me! Lol! Well, I kinda hate it to be that way, actually, but I'm happy that I got surgery as a baby to correct that, so I'm not really cross-eyed on a daily basis. Regarding dolls, I'm not sure about bjds, I haven't really thought about it, mmm, but I have seen some customized Blythes with their eyes like that and I think they are soooooo cute!!

    20. Ha! Derp-dorable! That is a hilarious way to put it. I know when I'm fixing Aya's eyes and they go skew, I just laugh and laugh at how funny she looks. Derp-dorable indeed!
