Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. The Deciding Factor--What are you picky about?

Feb 1, 2009

    1. I'm picky about lips. I wish I wasn't but there is something about the mouth that has to be right or I just can't love the doll.

    2. SKIN! And I have the hardest time falling in love with just the right dolls for my characters because of that. It's hard to find dark skinned dolls... at least it has been for me.

    3. For some reason, I can't stand elf ears on my own dolls. I find them beautiful, and I admire the elf-eared sculpts that belong to other doll owners, but I simply don't want them for my own dolls.

Aside from the ears, the sculpt also has to fit my preferred dollie aesthetic: Roundish face/chubby cheeks, big eyes (I don't like half-closed eyes much), and a smallish/narrow nose. All the dolls on my current wishlist fit those characteristics, and the only one that deviates is an event head from Luts.

    4. I need to like the mold all around. Sometimes, I think a doll is GORGEOUS, and is just, perfect, but that's just the apperance. The few BJD's I've got, 'spoke' to me in another way than others did, and from the first look, I had named them before they even got my place, and decided their charas and everything. I need to fall hard for a doll, or I would've turned myself poor with impulse buys...

    5. Nose. I can live with anime eyes and thin lips if she doesn't have a sunken in button nose
Personally I love big noses! I have a little button nose, while everyone else in my family has a strong and thick "triangular" nose with a small crook. It gets a bit too repetitive for me, seeing the same extremely sunken nose that is unrealistically rounded, that's why I'm a huge fan of Iplehouse! Especially the JID doll Tatiana! I love how she has a realistic button nose that takes up the majority of the center of her face, instead of being round and tiny
Their other sculpts, specifically Lehela, Ashanti, and Soo, have such distinctive faces that my mind immediately starts to create characters for them. For example, as soon as I saw Ashanti my mind was flooded with the accent of a cheesy Ukrainian spy XD But it's that kind of life that I feel the nose brings out, as silly as it sounds

    6. Currently?

The knees. Oh my god the knees!! And over exaggerated 36 pack abs. Mostly the knees though. This is more a technical issue that I will have to cope with.

(Why can't the knees be like the elbows, but in reverse??)

    7. It has always been: Whether or not he can be mistaken for a girl. Definitely a no no.

    8. Ears and nose. Especially ears.

    9. I am picky about a lot of little things when it comes to dolls, so I find that I end up with a checklist of sorts. If a doll has all of these dealbreakers, I find myself no longer interested! If it has just one or two, then it's not a problem at all, haha.

      My "dealbreakers" list:
      - Mouth: I don't like lips that are too plump, or that are open in an O shape. So basically, puckered lips can be bothersome sometimes. Open mouths bother me, depending on how they look. The whole mouth thing really depends on the faceup I see a doll with though.
      - Nose: It prefer a thinner nose. Wider noses are okay if the face is rounder, or if I find it matches the rest of the sculpt.
      - Eyelids: I love heavy eyelids, but will forego them if the eye shape pleases me.
      - Eyes: Eyes that are too big, too wide, or too far apart kind of bug me unless they fit the overall aesthetic of the doll. Most of the times, this isn't a problem, but sometimes it is what bothers me the most about a doll.

And about the body in general:
      - Knees. That knee joint! I love knees that bend as gracefully and realistically as possible. This means that I will be fine with less knee bending if I can get a prettier knee.

    10. For me if I feel like the doll is what I was imagining one of my characters Im instantly sold. However the genral rule for me is big eyes, small nose and a slight pout. I dont know why but I just cant help myself!

    11. Hmmm... Well, I like a substantial lip. Thin is good for certain "looks" but in general, I like thicker, poutier looks.

Another big thing is the chin. I can't stand a super pointy chin. It just doesn't look "real" to me at all.

On the vein of pointiness... I generally don't like pointy, straight noses. I like thicker, bigger noses, especially if they have a bump in the bridge! It's great. It looks so much more realistic an interesting to me.

    12. Our taste is very similar

I'm still very new to the bjd community and haven't even brought home my first doll, but have been researching and looking for the perfect boy for a couple of months....and finally found him.

I realized early on that my focus seemed to be the overall structure/shape of the face. I prefer very prominent male features; square jaw line/chin, full lips, prominent brow and a wider nose. I like smaller almond shaped eyes as opposed to the larger round shaped; which always reminds me of a child even in the large SD sized dolls.

In regards to the body sculpt I looked for overall definition. Although I've never modded a resin doll before I have done mods to other dolls and I'm much more confident in my skills at rebuilding joints (for perfect knees and elbows, etc) than I am in my skills to re-sculpt the shape and features on a face. So long as the body has the overall look I'm after the other things can be tweaked and modified to my liking.

    13. Oh my gosh, same here!! The lips are usually the first thing I fall in love with in a doll, next thing would be the eyes. I like them deep-set and big. :)

    14. It´s their expression, thats I´m picky about. That´s the only thing I can´t change later. So it has to be the rigtht one.

    15. For me, they need to be open eyed and NOT frowning. Frowning dolls just put me off.

    16. DITTO! It took me a heck of a time to find an MSD boy I was happy with.

    17. I am mainly picky about two things. First of all the face. I don't really like the blank, super doll-like expressions or sad expressions. I mainly look for a face sculpt that has a bit of a smile, but not overwhelming. I am also very picky about the jointing. So far, I have only like the aesthetics of fairyland and angell-studio dolls. But I haven't seen many dolls in person, and I might be able to get over the joints. Other than that, I'm pretty open to everything. Even if I think a doll looks unappealing in the store's photos, usually owner pics change my mind about them.

    18. I'm picky about eyes. I love big open eyes but they can't be out of proportion with the dolls face like some of the CP delfs look to me. I'm fine with sleeping heads, but most "gentle" heads I don't like.

    19. For me, it's ALL about the eyes. They have to be the perfect shape, not too far or close together. Personally I think eyes are the most beautiful feature of all living or inanimate things because they hold so much expression. This also leads to me spending a BOMB on eyes for all my dolls though :sweat

    20. Eyes & Lips for me, when I look for my dolls they are the two features that help me decide if they will be coming to live at my house.
