The Deciding Factor--What are you picky about?

Feb 1, 2009

    1. If we are talking just face area, balance, eyes the right size so you can see eye balls, and yet not have them staring at me, as well as decent sized mouths and normal nose, not tiny, not pointy. As for body. Detailed hands as maybe only part that shows all the time as well as posing ability. Stand good, sit straight and If it can do tricks great!

    2. For me it's lips and eyes. If the eyes are too huge it's a turnoff - I'm OK with big eyes but not huge dominating-the-whole-face ones, especially if the doll looks startled in most of it's photos. Lips have to look nice, not be too puckery and definitely not permanently smiley. I'd prefer a hint of frown or smirk than a smile (like DZ Yuu looks smirky to me, rather than smiley). Open mouths rarely appeal to me, I've seen very few that I like.

I think I actually look at lips first - I couldn't even tell you what Notdoll's sculpts eyes look like (for example, they're not the only ones!), because the lips turn me off and my eyes are drawn to them.

At first too-long and pointy noses bothered me, but not anymore. I think it's partly because I've got used to them, and partly because that's the simplest thing on the face to change.

The doll absolutely cannot be too childish, unless it's a tiny. I have to be able to believe it's at least a teenager before I'll consider it.

Elf ears = do not want. I'd put up with the small ones like on Minifee that can hide in the hair, if I had to, but the long ones completely remove the doll from consideration from me no matter how perfect the rest of it may be. Even if I was making an elf/sprite/fairy creature that needed pointy ears I'd want the tiny pointed ones not the long ones. (Although, if you're making a house-elf I guess you'd need those.) Along those same lines, vampire teeth = do not want, again if I wanted an obvious vampire I'd go with the tiny barely obvious Minifee style ones.

Wow, I'm pickier than I thought!

    3. I always look at eye shape :3
I love pouty lips too :D

    4. Usually it boils down to whether a particular sculpt looks like the character it's intended for. Sometimes in the past the facial expression played a part. I had been considering a particular head for one of my characters, and while it would have worked and I liked it, I didn't feel it was as versatile in terms of mood as some other heads were so I ended up passing on that one and getting something else.

    5. I like dolls that are slightly smiling, but not too happy. Most of my dolls look sad or sleepy. :) I also don't like really large eyes or wide mouthes.

    6. I don't know that I'd consider myself picky as my dolls all have different looks and are from different companies. They are all different sizes too. I just go for an overall look that appeals to me and I love to come here and see owner pics too.

There really isn't one feature or body type that I look for.

    7. In general, I go for more mature faces -- but so many of them have narrowed eyes, which I don't like! I like open eyes that aren't too big, which are proving difficult to find. So I'm kind of picky in that way.

As for the one feature that'll make or break a sculpt for me -- it's the nose. If it's too anime-ish or small, it had better be cute or I won't like it. I prefer good strong noses with a more-or-less straight bridge. (I say "I won't like it", but what I really mean is "I won't want it" -- there are few sculpts that I genuinely dislike!)

Of course, there are always the random sculpts that I have to make exceptions for, because even if the proportions are too childish, the eyes are too big, and the noses are too small, they're just so darn charming! So sometimes my pickiness is totally defeated. xD

    8. Somehow, the biggest factor is the nose. I don't like nose with too anime-ish shape, too pointy or too big. Then the eyes, I'm not quite fond of the doll if it isn't balanced with the face. Too big is not good for me too. I don't like if the teeth is too visible too. I think I also prefer ones with well-balanced details. For body, somehow I'm not too fond of the knee joints like the Souldoll Kid new body, but it's not a big problem. But if you see my list, you'll be confused whether I'm picky or not. xD

For exception, if the doll has unique face, which is distinctive from other dolls, most of the time I'll fall in love with them easily. :D

    9. eye shape. If the doll has 'droopy' looking eyes, I won't buy it. If the outer corners, for example, are equal to or lower than the inner corners...nope, not gonna happen.
If the eyes have 'heavy' looking eyelids, again, I won't buy (sorry Kurumi, nothing personal)
Unfortunately, this takes out a large number of otherwise lovely dolls (including many volks sculpts...yo's in particular) but the eyes are too important to me to ignore something I don't personally care for.

    10. When I think about it, I realize that probably most important to me are the lips. I can make allowances for eyes or noses or head proportions I'm not wildly enthusiastic about, but I have a hard time doing that for lips. If I don't like the lips, I find it virtually impossible to ignore or forgive that fact.

Of course, I do care about the other things. Eyes are probably the next most important, then the cheeks, then the nose, then the overall proportions, and the body creeps into that list in there somewhere. But it's the lips which can really make or break a sculpture for me.

    11. the eyes have it for me, lol - I love my Ducans eyes and his slightly smirky grin just totally swung it for me.:D

I love the dreamy/tender/half closed eye look and cant wait to get my tender elf sha - woottttt.
I have a DOD camine on the way too - I love the overall look of him/his sculpt and he has a lovely eye shape (more open eyed) but I hope ill feel the same when I see him in person.

    12. The upper lip and how the neck meets the head. Some upper lips just...bother me! Like they're too thin. And I like bluefairy dolls except for how the neck meets the head. I have no clue why I have an issue with it but I just don't like it and it prevents me from getting their dolls :C

    13. It's definitely about the eyes and the nose. And symmetry.

    14. hmm I guess I'm kinda picky because.........

I tend to be picky about everything! the eyeshape, the nose, the lips, the ears, the expression. it just all has to fit together!

A doll can have the most beautifull eyes, nose, and ears, but if that has to mean something else does not look right, I wont like the doll.

so for me the most important thing is the whole picture of the doll, because after all even the biggest nose or the most poking ears can look good as long as the rest of the face fits with it!

    15. I can never even think about buying a doll unless I see it's profile. Some dolls look gorgeous until you see them from the side then they look hideous and weird.

It makes me cautious to buy dolls when the site pics don't have a side on view.

    16. nose and eyes.

    17. It's the lips for me to. I know many great dolls but the lips just aren't for me, I just can't see it... I also can't totally fall for a doll whose face is too pointy. I've done that with many lovely dolls ^^

    18. I think for me.... it must be nose and lips. I used to really love the DOTs, especially Camine until I realized just how pointy their noses are on profile and so I kinda lost interest. Thats the hardest thing for me cause a lot of them are so gorgeous in a front or 3/4 view, but the profile makes me wrinkle my nose. Bummer!

And then I don't like the really 'korean style' lips (I don't know how to explain this other than Manwha artists almost always draw their lips like this...). Like..the wider..lips...yeah... Or if they look puckery..

Droopy eyes are also not good. And I'm not too fond of closed eyes cause then it seems like their expression really is always the same...

    19. deciding factor would be the lips and nose.
i like long-ish defined noses instead of button noses. as for the lips, i prefer them on the thinner, non-pouty side.and sotimes eyes that eat up the whole face bothers me too.
but im especially a sucker for a good nose and mouth sculpt.

    20. I've seen a couple of dolls that I liked, but the neck joint was so horrendously awful, I decided they wouldn't be my first dolls! Some have this terrible gap between neck and head and because I'm new to dolls, I wouldn't want to do any heavy construction on my first.
