The Deciding Factor--What are you picky about?

Feb 1, 2009

    1. When it comes to face sculpts, the two big ones are the eyes and mouth. Either one of those being too 'off' and I just won't go the doll. Faceups don't matter at all to me, so it's about the shape, slant, size, and placement of the eye. The mouth creates the expression, either frowney or smiley or neutral/versatile, etc.. And I like certain types of lips better than others, of course. There are types of noses that I like better than others, but I'm not as picky with them, and typically if the other things are OK, a 'not perfect' nose is OK.

    2. For me...most of the times are the eyes and lips(like how the upper lip is too thick or the mouth is too smiling that it's fake).

Sometimes the noses are too sharp...or the face too small...@_@

    3. For me it's the eyehole shape/size and the lips. I don't like super wide-eyed dolls, as my boyfriend said: "It reminds me of a cow's head. :o Such wide eyes, and almost cross-eyed!", and sometimes too pouty of lips are very 'ugh *shudder*', if you know what I mean? :sweat

    4. When I look at dolls and consider adding them to my wishlist, they need to have good noses and chins. Of course, depending the character I want to make with them, the criteria changes, but two things I really don't like in dolls are round upturned noses, and pointy anime chins. X3

    5. It seems to be the lips are very important in deciding factor, and eyes too.

    6. I think for me it is eye shape I find that there are some dolls I wouldn't buy because of the eye shape. So I am picky about eye shapes....

But I have found when looking for my second doll that the biggest deciding factor for me has become the profile and the nose....Not that I am really.."PICKY" about them but that when I am comparing several sculpts I like it tends to come down to the profile (if I can find a pic that is)

For instance...I love unidoll Jace because of his profile! He has a huge beak of a nose (imho) and I love it so much I always thought he was an amazing sculpt but then I saw a shot of him in profile and fell in love! I had always enjoyed looking at him but he was never on my wish list but his profile got him on my list....strange I know

So I am PICKY about eye shape but my deciding factor tends to come down to the profile whenever it can

    7. I'm picky about the head's facial structure, along with the lips and the size of the eyeholes. ^^;; It has to be just right for that one character-if its even off by a smudge I won't get it because it would bug me forever. >.>

    8. Eye shape is the first thing that I notice, but the "make or break" thing I look at after that is the jawline. Certain sculpts have jawlines that I just can't stand. There will be a doll that I am thinking about getting and if I see a photo that gives an unflattering view of the jaw, I start re-thinking things.

    9. A lot of little things can change my mind about a doll, but the most common is the nose. At least three or four times now I thought I loved a doll from the promo pics, but then I look at owner pics and realize I can't stand the nose from certain angles.

"Staring" eyes or "pits of darkness" eyes; I'm not so picky on this as with the nose, but very often I find that in owner pics the eyes suddenly seem way too wide or way too narrow as opposed to the promo pics, where they seemed perfectly positioned and lit. Although, sometimes that's only because sometimes that particular owner just isn't great at positioning eyes or hasn't got the right size of eye in. But if it's a case where every owner's pic looks wonky, then no matter how good the eyes look in the promo I'll have to hold back.

Getting even more picky, I watch out for "coarseness" in the sculpt in general. Too asymmetric (a little asymmetry is actually a good thing), one eye being bigger than the other, "flatness" in the sculpt, sloppy bits near the nostrils or lips, the eye sockets being strangely thick and uneven (aaaaagh there is one particular doll that would totally be on my list if I weren't put off by her thick eye socket), harsh plane changes. Basically, signs that a sculpt is not nuanced/finished enough.

    10. The faceup... o_o I can't do faceups so I'd get it with the doll, if I don't like it then I wont get it...

    11. simple answer to me is EVERYTHING, however I loathe chipmunk cheeks and often end up sanding these down

    12. Ugh, for me, there are two parts: the face, and the body.

The face: Preferably more realistic and less anime like. On an MSD, eyes can be a little big, but if the lips are small, the nose must be small too. If the nose is bigger, the lips must be bigger too. I don't care for chubby cheeks either. I like Notdoll Peru, especially the lips, but the cheeks...no...

The eye shape is so important, especially if the eyes are big. Sometimes really large eyes look overwhelming and spider-like for a doll that looks sweet and delicate. The shape of the chin is also something I really notice.

There always seems to be a certain general look to the dolls I like. All of them have a hint of a "cat-like" face. Slightly upturned and set eyes, the pointed jaw, the way the mouth is turned.

The body: I love thinness. There are some dolls that I love just for this reason, such as the Rosette dolls. One of the reasons why my first doll was from Soulkid (double-jointd body) was because of the super thin legs. Thin arms in dolls are also really appealing.

    13. For me it's hands, and body (sculpt and functionality). I like a lot of different styles of faces, and people IRL look very different from each other so the face isn't as important to me. Basically if I could sculpt it better I wont buy it.

    14. My dolls must look child like and innocent. I'm very child like :fangirl:. I like round cheeks and such. So I love Bellose and Little Fee Ante. I also love lips. Big lips and dewy eyes are the best! It's funny that I like my dolls to be roundish, as I would like to be much skinnier and angular myself :sweat.

    15. To be honest, I don't know. But I can always find at least one thing wrong with any sculpt, so I'm very picky. However, just because a doll has features I don't consider attractive doesn't mean I won't get it - as a matter of fact, I've decided against several dolls because they were just too pretty. I do know I care more about the face sculpt, because that's what I'm going to be looking at the most. But that's about as in-depth as I know myself.

For a certain character of mine, it's all about the jaw shape. Sadly, there aren't a single doll in production right now that has the features I want, so this character isn't going to be embodied for a while. For another character of mine, it was the eyes and the nose and... I've only recently realized Chrom fitted these parameters very closely.

Company reviews on quality is a big thing, though. I love the Domuya perennial body, but after hearing some bad resin reviews about them, I'm seriously reconsidering.

    16. I'm picky about absolutely EVERYTHING. It's really annoying and probably the only reason why I do not yet own a bjd:doh:...(

I don't want to even go into specifics, but the best example I can think of is that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE leeke d-type honey head, but I HATE all of the bodies:

      1. the shoulders look VERY weird, they jut out.
      2. very limited mobility
      3. there are three different body types, all which basically look the same.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE FairyLand's LittleFee bodies BUT I really don't like the faces

      1. too realistic/baby looking
      2. not a fan of the nose
      3. don't like how the upper lip comes out so much

basically the Leeke face is perfect for my dollie character and the Fairyland body is perfect for posing.

I really don't know what to do :?

    17. I'm picky about pretty much EVERYTHING on a doll. I tend to focus a lot on the face at first but the big deciding factor for me is definitely the body. So far I've found very few bodies out there that appeal to me. It's really starting to become a problem for me.

My biggest turn-off with most sculpts is the HANDS. I'm constantly left disappointed with a doll, because their hands just aren't detailed or delicate enough for me. I'm really starting to tire of dolls with overly large hands, chubby stunted looking fingers, or just plain un-expressive hand shapes.

I also have a hard time getting excited about dolls with short, un-graceful legs and feet. It just tends to make their stance look really awkward and seems like they wouldn't pose well at all. D:

So half the dolls I see I'm like, "Oh he/she has a lovely face, but I'm going to have to get a different body."

It doesn't help that half the time, hybrids won't work out because of head sizes and resin colors :(

    18. faces and faceup. im really picky about boys, less about girls.

    19. its definitely the face. and the thing im most picky about in the face is the lips. the lips can put a doll on or off my wishlist, then after that its the shape and size of the eye's.

the thing im not to picky about is the body.there isnt to many bodies out there that i dont like (maybe 2 or 3) and there is only one i notice enough to really love (supia girl body)

    20. POSEABLITY and I'm really picky about maturity level, i dont care for the babyish looking ones very much, especially on mature bodies

and hands should be long, graceful, and expressive
