The dolls you gave up

Dec 10, 2009

    1. This is such a great idea for a thread! Im loving all the very different opinions on the matter.

When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?

I do. I cant wait to see what the new owner does with it. I want to know for the same reasons i look in the gallery. I love seeing how the one mold can look so completely different. That and i love the different characters people come up with. I dont mind whatever they do with it, its not my doll anymore, but its nice to know they are giving it a better home than i could.
I sold one doll recently that i just couldn't get to do what i wanted from it. But the new owner has done wonders and he is absolutely beautiful. It makes me happy to see that he's getting the attention he deserves.
I also sold another, not because he wasn't working, he was perfect, i loved him to bits and he was my first doll. But his character outgrew the mold and i knew once i had the new mold this doll would get neglected. Iv yet to see photos of this one but im dying to see :D

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?

I haven't. Only for a short period of time afterwards to make sure the item was received and to see photos. I wouldn't mind though.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

No. The personality makes the character moreso than the mold of the doll. I've bought dolls with face-ups and wiped them to make them my own.
When i sell i expect the buyer to make the doll their own, so i wouldnt be offended if a face-up or the accessories were changed. But at the same time if they wanted to keep them looking exactly the same i would be very flattered. Even if they wanted to continue the character i gave it. I still wouldnt mind, because they would have their own interpretation of the character and it would become their own unique one, and be no longer mine.

    2. I sold two dolls so far, and to begin with I did watch the girls posts to see what she did with the dolls, but after a while, I thought it might get a little weird, stalking her posts like that.

As for buying second hand and changing the doll, I have passed up on two second hand dolls because they belonged to friends, and I wanted to change them. I thought it might be painful for the girl, when she saw how the doll had changed at future meets.

All the same, second hand dolls should be sold with the acceptance that who they were before is no longer who they will be to the person buying. Currently selling another doll, and I won't even refer to him as the name I had picked for him, to help ease myself into that acceptance. Now, he's just "Woosoo." :sweat

    3. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel? definately, i consider it a fun part of this hobby, being able to see what other people can do with a sculpt. i look at the photos and always enjoy seeing how former dollies of mine are looking like, to see them with owners that really like them makes me happy.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing? yep

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
no because one money passes hands and the doll is in your hands then it's yours to do with as you please.good topic ^^

    4. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel? (Iยดd also like to hear particular sories, if it ever made you sad what the previous owner did with the doll or at the other hand, happy).

I'm actually interested in seeing what people do with the dolls I sell them. But it will be with a definite indifference as the doll is no longer my concern and will be like any other doll out there.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?

No, dropping a comment or two in the gallery is all I will ever do and I never will contact the owner aside from the usual business related matters.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

No, because once the doll is in my hands it makes it completely mine to customize, play with and whathaveyou.

    5. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
I've sold two dolls before, and I haven't really kept up with their new owners. I've bought three dolls second-hand (getting a fourth) and they haven't kept up either, with the one exception. I bought a doll from someone in our doll group, so I see her every month pretty much.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing? Nope.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner? Not really. Usually, the dolls I get are blank heads or I change their face-ups. I don't ask the previous owner for the dolls old name or any personality details. I figure that they've either got a new direction planned for their character or they just don't care to have that character anymore.

    6. Yes if I recognize the name I do open the thread to see their pictures to see how they are now

No and No to number 2 and 3

    7. Itยดs really interesting to read all these opinions :) I am glad I am not the only one who would worry about these things :) Even though of course itยดs understandable that once the doll is sold the new owner can do whatever he wants with it. But I guess if you had the doll for some time there is still some atachement left at least to see what the doll became to make sure itยดs in good hands :)
Krissy: I love your replyXD And I think I can say the same thing :D
guess_who: I am glad you look at it this way :)

    8. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it?

No. I wish them well and send them on their way. A friend bought one doll from me and so I know where he is and I am happy that she is having fun with him.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?

I sometime tease my friend that my doll moved away and is living under an assumed name in a different state, but she knows I'm only joking. I keep in touch with her because I like her very much, not because of the doll.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

No. I expect other people to change the dolls I have sold, so it doesn't bother me to change the ones I have bought. I have only one doll who has kept her previous owner's name for her (Rosalie). It suited her so well that I kept it for her, except that I call her by a diminutive version of it (Rosie).

    9. im going to do this really, really soon, since money matter is pressing :(

When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it?

nope, i just wish the owner would take a good care of it.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?

i nvr done it before but i dont think i would, unless in a way or another they became my friend, but i doubt so.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

nope, if they let it go then they let it go, and it's up to me to make the doll be as how i want it to be.

    10. No to all of the above. I actually never thought about who the former characters of my dolls were and I haven't thought to check on my previous dolls. I just blindly trust that they will be taken care of and that the seller knows that I'll take care of my dolls. But then if it was a person that I actually knew then I might check in every now and then.

    11. When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

As I've never sold any dolls, this is the only one I can answer :) No, it doesn't bother me at all. Once a person sells a doll it isn't theirs anymore, period. If they want the doll to stay the same, then they need to keep the doll. I buy dolls with my own characters in mind, and there's no point to me buying a doll if I'm too afraid to change it's old character. A lot of my dolls have come off the marketplace, and I never even knew who their old characters were, and I never gave it any thought, because that's not why I buy dolls. The flip side to that is if I was to ever sell a doll, I would not want the buyer to keep his/her old character, because the characters are mine and will always stay that way.

    12. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
I don't really keep track, but when I come across pictures of them I do look at them.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
Hehe.. only one, but she's a friend of mine, and I'm still friends with a girl I bought a doll from here on DoA. But not really cause she wants to keep track of the doll, although I do send pictures and stuff ^^

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
      No.

    13. When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

i bought a BBB Sprite from the MP and yes it does make me nervous when i think about changing her looks in the future. i even asked permission from the previous owner if i could do so or even change her name lol. I even kept the dolls previous name as a middle name for her.

    14. just reading this, i recently sold a doll that i had bought second hand. i thought i would really love her and after a few month of owning her, she really just didnt fit in with my other dolls and i found that she really didnt excite me as much as she used to.

i sold her to a very nice woman, im not sure if shes here on doa, but she kept me updated all throughout the shipping process and when she arrived, she took some pictures. she even updated me with pictures when she redid the dolls face up and told me the new name she gave her. I had told her right off the bat that she could do whatever with the doll; change her name, face, anything she wanted. i feel like asking her to keep the same "character" would be kind of offensive, especially since she wouldnt be mine anymore.

needless to say, im so happy that i could make someone else happy and excited with that doll. the woman still shows me pictures of meet ups and new outfits that she makes for her :3

    15. I only keep track of friends that got dolls from me. Sometimes I see one of my old dolls pop up here in the galleries and I like to see what the new owner did to them, but they're not my doll anymore so I won't comment on it.
Vice versa, I would be horribly annoyed if a previous owner of one of my dolls would be 'stalking' me and my doll's progress so to speak. I don't need to feel as if I need the approval of anyone when it comes to my dolls. My taste shouldn't be related to the taste of the previous owner.

    16. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
Well, I havent exactly been keeping track of the doll I sold, but I've seen it in meet-ups since we live in the same city with the person who bought it. I dont have the urge to follow my old doll, for it was never the right doll for me. You know, character stayed with me, only the doll was sold. If I had sold the character, I'd propably keep some track of it.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
No, I have not for that matter. Same reason than above.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
I quess it would if I would keep the old looks. I think I might feel it not my own so much. But, I do change the looks always, makeup too, so it doesent. Actually I like to buy "used" dolls better than new ones.

    17. I've never sold a doll on the marketplace, but the third question definitely applies to me.

(When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?)

It doesn't. I currently have four full dolls and several floating heads and faceplates that I've purchased off the marketplace. One I hope to send off for a new faceup soon, which will completely change him from the facial look he's had from his two previous owners (seriously, original company face-up for several years and two owners... I'm amazed when I shouldn't be).

In all honesty, I don't look to see 'who' a doll was before s/he arrives at my home. Once a person cuts off their ties enough to sell it, that personality has disappeared and it's a blank slate for the new owner's imprint.

One doll I've purchased secondhand I haven't changed a whit. I adore his faceup, clothes, wig, and eyes he came with, so I haven't touched them at all. 'Who' he was before? I have no clue, and no desire to find out.

If I ever sold a doll I wouldn't 'chase after it.' It's sold. It's no longer mine. The personality I might have imparted upon it would no longer exist, so there would no longer be any ties to bind me to it. I don't care if it's sold a thousand more times, since I came to the point where I sold it. Why should I care? It belongs to someone else now. That's all that matters.

    18. I've never sold a doll and never will. :) However, I have bought several of my boys from other people; I like knowing their stories and I know the old names some of them used to have. but that is their past, and I think that for at least some of the sellers who sent me dolls, their old characters stayed and just their bodies moved on to their new home. Where I 'uncovered' the 'real' them of course! Gave them their new name anyway. :D

    19. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?

I'm interested in what new owners do to dolls I do sell. I can't say I actively keep track of them, but it always brings a smile to my face to see the characters their new owners bestow upon them.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?

Not outside of DoA. If I see a gallery post or picture in a discussion thread, I'm always happy to comment. That's about it, though.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

No. Once I purchase a doll, it's mine to do what I please. I also feel this way when I sell a doll - after a transaction is complete, I have no say in what a new owner chooses to do with the doll. It's not my doll anymore.

    20. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
Nah. If I sell a doll it's because I didn't want it anymore and would rather have the money it could bring as well as send it along to someone who would be able to get enjoyment out of it.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
      No

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
Nope. After money has exchanged hands it's my property to do with as I please.
