The dolls you gave up

Dec 10, 2009

1. No to all three questions, for the most part. When I buy a doll I do what I want to it, when I sell a doll the new owner gets to do the same. Once it goes it's gone. I rarely regret selling. Occasionally I do for a little while, but I get over it...

2. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?

Nope, I couldn't care less what happens to them after they reach their new owner safely. So far my irl friends have purchased my dolls thought they usually don't do much to them [or just never post pics?] I'd find it refreshing to see how different their character could be though~

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?

We usually cosplay together so yes...though bjds are rarely in any discussion.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

Pfft, no. I don't see why I should? o_O

3. K_en, with all the personalisation of dolls, some people feel a little worried about changing the character of the doll, in case it hurts the seller's feelings. Customisation choices can be a very personal thing between doll and owner.
But luckily, as most posters have proved, sellers don't mind what you do with your doll :)

As to the questions, pretty much no to all of them. I might be curious, and look up the buyer for any pictures after the sale has finished, but that's about it really.

4. I have let several dolls go since I joined this hobby. For me, it can often be an emotional experience, since more often than not, I'm very much attached to the ones who leave.

I've sold my first doll, my SD13 Kohya, and will always love him. I miss him very much, but he just kind of fell out of my collection. When I started in the Hobby, there was less variety, and I was less mature. However, over time my tastes changed and I'd realized that the character I'd shelled him as was not right for the doll mold. And because he'd spent so many years as that character, I couldn't just turn around and make him someone else, someone new. The girl I sold him to, I try to keep tabs on, though we haven't spoken much in the past months.

I sold my DoC Too to effigy, and I try to keep in touch as best I can. I'm very curious to see what he will do with my old little boy, and I still get updates on my Too's progress, which I appreciate.

I also get updates and keep in touch with the buyer of my Meditation Euclase. His new name is Thunderheart and he is treated way better than I could ever treat him! The same goes for my old Nanuri 2007, who is now a kitsune and a female. xD

My MNF Shushu is the only one who I haven't gotten any progress on since she left. I got one picture, and I know where she is, so I guess that's fine. I had the least attachment to her. She was the first doll I ever sold. (My Too, I traded.)

I've only bought one doll truly second hand (as in second hand in tact with a story, face and character, and not just resold for profit), and for me, it didn't work well because the character was so engrained into the doll for me that I couldn't change him to get along with what I wanted for him! xD So now he's with someone else who can't make that attachment to him. xD

5. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
I don't keep track of my sold dolls, but there were a couple I've sold that I was curious to see what the new owners did with them. Sometimes the new owners sent me pics of the doll's new look, and that one look was more than enough for me. No reason to keep hounding them to make sure they're being treated fairly. :XD:

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
No, but to some of the people I have sold my dolls to I wouldn't mind if they wanted to keep in contact, simply because they were very cool and friendly people. It wouldn't be for the sake of the dolls.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
Maybe in the case I buy a doll (with intentions of radically changing the face-up) from somebody who still has emotional attachment it but had to sell because of financial troubles, I would be. Doesn't mean I won't go on with my plans though. Even if the tables are turned and I'm the one who hit financial troubles and need to sell even my favorite little MSD girl, I wouldn't have any hard feelings against the new owner. It's his/her doll now, and he/she can do whatever they want--wipe off her face up and redo it with sharpies, do gore mods on her, whatever.

6. I'm not too certain why you responded to me o_O

Maybe I worded my post odd? I wasn't implying nobody should care or even questioning it as I know how attatched some people are to their dolls/characters.

I just don't personaly care myself~

7. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
No I usually forget all about them.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
No but I often wonder how they are doing. I never ask.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
When I got my Ttori he had a face up done by the previous owner. So I had him repainted but by then I had grown attach to the first face up. I felt a little sad.

8. Because this is a forum? And if you ask questions, they get answered?
I thought you didn't know, and I misjudged your short sentence. I couldn't read that you weren't implying nobody should care or that you knew that people are attached to their dolls/characters by 'Pfft no I don't see why I should? o_O'

o_O O_O O_o

9. I've never sold a doll, but I've bought a full doll, and about.. four heads second hand now <3

The full doll I bought was a dream, he came with the default face up, and of course I kept that, as it was one of the things I was looking for. I've changed his style, his hair, and his eyes, and he is mine through and through now. When I bought him I knew nothing about who the original owner had had him be, I never knew what she called him or anything at all. I've kept in touch with his seller on and off, I sent her some messages and she's seen pictures of him, I figured she might like to see what happened with her boy. Now I've done that once, unless I change his style radically I won't bother her again unless she asks me, but if she did ask, I'd be happy to show her, he's mine now that I've bought him, and I didn't feel bad for the changes I made.

Recently I bought a Zack Fair head with a stunning face up. The face up was one of the reasons I bought it, rather than one of the blank ones I could have picked up for slightly cheaper at the time. I love it even more since he arrived, and I've thanked the former owner who did the face up for her lovely work! ^_^

The same will hopefully be true of the wintery head I'm trying to purchase right now, the faceup is stunning... utterly stunning, and it's what's finally pushed me to buy the head. Even though I keep the faceups the same, the characters will still change.

There have been threads selling heads and dolls where people have asked that their characters be kept and their looks never changed. While I might have liked how the doll looked, I probably wouldn't want to buy a doll with a personality I couldn't change, or with a look I couldn't alter, as well, it's my doll after I've paid. I'm not willing to pay for the pleasure of looking after someone else's character, if you get me. =3

If I ever did come to sell my dolls, I would do so without the eyes and wigs, as it's those things that really define my characters to me, I wouldn't change their faceups, as the ones I have are in my opinion, lovely, but I wouldn't ever begrudge a new owner changing them, I can't see me ever wanting to sell them, but once the doll left my hand it would belong to someone else, not me, and my opinion would no longer have an impact. <3

Just my thoughts!

^^

10. When I made the decision to collect only Volks dolls, that made me think critically about my existing collection. I sold my Souldoll Hye and my Bobobie Cookie, and now I'm selling my Soulkid Snyder and Soulkid Harang dolls. Selling my Snyder will be hard because she was my first doll, but I love the character and will be growing her up into Volks SD13 Rinon. I'm hoping that the soul of Gwenllian's character will transfer to Rinon from Snyder.

When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
I did think about looking up a doll I'd sold but thought against it. The doll is no longer mine now, and I'd hate to see the doll badly faced-up or broken, so I want to stay ignorant.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
No, I don't want the other person to feel like I'm watching over them too closely and make them feel like they can't do anything to the doll for fear that I'll disapprove.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
No :) When I buy a doll, I buy a doll for my own characters. If the previous owner wanted to keep the doll as their character they should have just kept the doll!

11. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel? (I´d also like to hear particular sories, if it ever made you sad what the previous owner did with the doll or at the other hand, happy).

I try to, but in truth I have sold quite a few lately and can no longer keep track of who they went to. So far, I have only seen pics of one of my sold dolls, and that was on the marketplace again :( I felt really bad for the little guy and thought about buying him back, but I didn't. I actually wish I could see more pics of my sold dolls. I would love to see how they've changed in their new owner's hands.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?

I have not. Once I have made the decision to sell a doll, I am no longer emotionally invested in them. I always hope they go to a home where they will get more love and attention than I was able to give, but never "check up" on them.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?

Not at all. The previous owner is selling them for a reason, and once I agree to purchase, the doll is mine to do with as I please. I have only kept the non-default faceup of one doll I bought off the Marketplace, but that's because it is so unique. The faceup is what drew me to the doll in the first place. It is a little strange, though, because people have asked me if I copied the faceup or if I bought such-and-such's doll. But, then again, the faceup artist also contacted me to say it was good to see the doll back in photos and such again.

12. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
No, I never keep track. I've sold a lot of dolls over the years and I can honestly say that when the doll has left my hands I'm emotionally detached from it. I have a bjd limit of 10 dolls. To keep to this limit I must sell a doll before buying a new one. I've learned through this process to be detached when it comes to selling.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
No. I also buy 2nd hand dolls and would never expect to stay in touch with the person who sold a doll to me. Personally I'd find it a little strange if a previous owner wanted to stay in ongoing contact after the sale. After all it's my doll now so I can do as I wish. However, I'd happily oblige with an initial email & photo to let them know that their doll is ok. I wouldn't be at all ok with constant contact.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
No. Most secondary dolls that I buy are without character so they're pretty much a blank canvas for creating a new personality.

13. i havent even owned a BJD (yet...) but i have thought about what would happen if i purchased one form someone whod treated the doll with much love and given them personality and etc.

it makes me nervous, even when its not a doll, to purchased things from other people, when the thing is something that could be possibly sentimental to the person. i guess im weird, or something, but i always thought a little piece of someone gets put into something when they love it, spent alot of time on making it/playing with it/spending time with it, and i feel its disrespectful to that person to modify it or treat it badly x_x

looks like im not buying pre-loved dolls unless theyre perfect for me, huh?

likewise, im not sure id ever really sell a doll. i have a hard enough time getting rid of regular items in my room. when i get my first doll, and the possible 2nd and 3rd and so on, id have put so much personality and customization into them that itd be really hard to let go of, let alone let someone mess with their looks. i guess i consider dolls to be too human to give to others x_x it hits me as a 'slave trade' except we dont make our dolls do our chores.

if i did ever manage to sell a doll i had owned, id have to purposely keep myself from looking at any new pictures, or hearing any updates on any changes to the doll, cause itd hurt my feelings to know that, little-whats-her-name just got a hole drilled through her nose for a piercing.

14. Sorry for the confusion, it was a rehtorical question [which is why I was confused]~

I don't see why I should due to my behavior in not caring what happens to my former dolls, but I understand why others do : p

15. I have only sold one doll and she went to a friend of mine, and happens to be my sister's roommate. Yes I see the doll on a regular basis....how can I not when I live in the same apartment complex? But do I keep in contact because of the doll , the answer is no. In fact I regretted selling that doll at first but am glad my friend has in fact made the doll her own.

I have bought 2 dolls second hand. The first was from a friend of mine who sadly has a habit of buying dolls and then selling them less than a year later. I knew I would acquire the doll if she ever decided to sell him. I have changed his character and everything but do not feel guilty about it. The second doll was my puki and sadly I haven't posted much on her due to life and lack of photo equipment. Am I nervous about what the former owner thinks....no. I hardly think of her as a second hand doll, just another doll I have now added to my small resin family.

16. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel? So far I have only sold heads and not full dolls. In the past I have asked buyers to keep me updated with what they do with the heads but they never do. =| It's kind of sad, I'd love to see what kind of characters grow from my old dolls.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing? See above.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner? No, it doesn't. I brought the doll with the full intention of transforming it into one of my characters. It would be awesome to have the seller contact me in regards to what happened to their doll but so far in my experience it hasn't happened.

Lol, my response is so depressing!

17. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
Of the ones I have sold, I've not kept track of them. I will look from time to time at one particular one I sold just to see if they could make something of her, where I could not.

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
No I haven't, I just look at their gallery threads from time to time just to see what they have done with them, but generally I keep no track of them at all.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
I have a few times wondered what previous owners would think of what I have done with my second hand dolls (a bobobie cookie, dollinian tiny, two puki, a dim achernar). I have no qualms about changing their looks though. My cookie came to me as a girl with a default faceup - which I admit was adorable, but it was not what I needed. He is now male, has been modded to dreaming and has a rather different faceup (and he's yellowed a bit, whoops, but he wasn't exactly non-yellow to begin with). I've wondered what she would think if she saw him now ^^;

18. When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel?
I'm currently trying to sell one, but it's for reasons I couldn't help. My boyfriend ended up getting the poor kiddo's head smashed, so I have to sell the body because I just simply can't afford a new one. He meant a lot to me though, the little bugger... I suppose I might talk to the person I sell him to for a bit, to see what they do with him. I love before and afters <3

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing?
See first answer... xD

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner?
Kind of, but I figure, you can't really help it if you really need that particular doll. I just bought a doll from a friend of mine, and he just got home yesterday. I have plans for him, but when I was waiting for him to get here over the weekend, and was trying to come up with a character for him, I really wanted to keep some sort of trait from him, in honor of her, because it's likely she'll see him in person again eventually.
Other than that, I figure, if they're selling it, yeah, they put time and money into it, but it's yours now, it's your turn to put time and money into it.

19. Miyabi, thank you for this thread!

When you sell a doll, do you keep track of it? Do you look at the photos new owner posts? If yes, how does it make you feel? Yes, I tracking them a couple of days just to be convinced they are doing fine^^
One boy, bought from me, was turned by his new owner into victim, zombie-alike character with dirty make-up and open wounds and scratches etc, and it made me very sad… :(
Another girl, bought from me, became absolutely beautiful and keeping with a lot of care. I feel really happy about her and her new owner :aheartbea

Have you ever stayed in contact with the person who bought your doll to ask him how he/she is doing? No, I would never “stalk” people to whom I sell, only look at the photos new owner posts.

When buying dolls from marketplace, does it make you nervous, changing its looks and character with regard to the previous owner? Yes, it does. I like to keep their look and character, one time I even kept her name^^ If I need exact look and/or character, I prefer to buy blank doll from manufacturer and make what I need with it.

20. I will probably be buying my first doll from the marketplace, so I must admit that I am a little bit nervous about upsetting someone by changing their old doll too much.
