1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

The Dollshe side of the Dollshe/Dollmore copy issue *translated statement page 27*

Nov 21, 2006

    1. Usually if someone says flat out "Yeah, I based the mold on this" I've found people don't frown on it too much. It's out there that you weren't totally 'original', versus trying to hide it. Especially in an informal situation where someone is not making a load of duplicates, or it's just a one-off FrankenDolly sort of thing, it's less off-putting.

Kind of apples next to the oranges of this situation, I think, but relevant in that it points out the differences in what the doll community will or will not respond negatively to (publically, at least).

    2. Yes that was my point, I guess I didn't express myself well enough

    3. please don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to say that it should be an issue for that head, or to say that the situation is exactly the same I'm just trying to get people to stop and think about things in perspective before they start raining down fire and brimstone on dollmore (especially since we don't really know anything for certain)

and no I'm not accusing anyone personaly of this, I just know in suituations like this that it does happen a lot

    4. Hey PamSD has a Kyle..

Could you do us a favor and try to find those spots on the Kyle doll that the picture, Mr. Dollshe has. And could you take some pictures! It would finally prove to some of us that those pictures are real and not photoshoped. This would also prove how much of those pictures are true! THAT would be hardcore proof there to me.

Comon doesn't anyone who has kyle can do this?

    5. i'll take pic of my dollshe when i get back home. (still stuck at work :P )

    6. A lot? I'd disagree there.

And the situations have few similarities. The Mau head was plainly stated to be based off of _____ head, it was being made by an individual (plus some help, I'm assuming), and it was a short run of heads.
Compare this to two large companies, both with professional sculptors paid to make original dolls, and one having used the other as a base and then avoided telling the truth? Plus the mass marketing, the fact that this is not a head aimed at a certain niche market (as I would classify Mau. Gorgeous kitty, but appeals to significantly less people than...oh...El) but a full doll aimed at THE market...I'd argue very significant differences.
Plus honesty goes a very long way.

Regardless, the similarities between Dollshe and Kyle are obvious to most people who are willing to objectively look at the dolls. I think claiming to wait 'until the courts decide' is silly when the evidense is so clearly displayed. It seems like a hope that the legal system will provide personal justification for defending a blatant copy. 'Well it's not my fault, THEY said it was Ok and they're in charge!' The rabid loyalty-to-a-fault and the avoidance of the doll community always mysitifes me. Maybe I just don't have a problem calling companies out for thier mistakes, no matter if I like them or not. I don't believe being a fan means being blind.
I doubt this would go to court anyway, I'd be surprised if it did. Settling outside seems to make more sense, but then again I'm looking at it from a North American perspective.

I repeat, a damn pity that dollmore had to do this. I'd love a better posing 70cm boy. I really hope their beefed up body is a complete reworking and that they discontinue, recall, or otherwise limit THIS body. If they have talent then that can use thier own, not someone elses.

    7. Well, if you don't think ALL these companies don't dissect each other's dolls to get ideas to use on their own, you're ignoring how businesses really work. Everything is built on something else. A lot depends on how much or how little you diverge from your *inspiration*, or whether it's a protected source or not. (Anybody got a head-count on how many recent movies have been subtly or blatantly based on Pride and Prejudice? It would be far less if there was still copyright protection on the novel - ) Where you get ahead in this depends on the talent of the people you have to discern a useful concept or idea and then work fresh from it. Shortcuts may well come and bite someone in the butt.

IF Dollmore used Hound as a base - IF they'd taken the time to modify the elbow joints and finger positions a bit more, and IF someone had inspected the first molds to clean them up inside as well as outside, no one here would deny that Kyle is indeed a work of art. Especially the proportions and shaping of the legs, the torso - and god, the feet (someone must have been terrified that these big dolls would fall over too easily otherwise!), these are all unique to him and the rest of the model line.

And I'm sure these sort of improvements will be found, a year or so down the line, on dolls from some other company. In the interim, maybe Dollmore did a big stumble in this particular case, maybe not - a court needs to be the final judge of that - they have otherwise been a great company to deal with, been the recipients of everyone's high praises here, and they still have many desirable products.

    8. That is going to require I completely dis assemble him and remove his wiring inorder to get adequate lighting AND I am not sure from the pics WHERE I am supposed to be looking...I can't tell in the pics which part is in which pic. someone label them upper and lower for me and I might be able to help.

    9. That is the drawback, I know. Marius (my Hound) needs restringing anyway, which is why I don't mind completely dissassembing him for photos; I'll label each piece and the exact location of the marks as I photograph them tomorrow, and perhaps that will give you a clearer idea of where to look. I'm just going to basically catalogue every little casting mark I find inside Marius, and then we'll see what matches up and what doesn't. Sound fair?

    10. oh dear, here i go~~~

it says that is the inside of the stomach.

at the bottom it says inside of the stomach again, on the other side.

      i've decided to skip everything else except the location translations ^^;;;

    11. I really don't think were on the same wave length here, so I won't say much in response apart from what I've already said just in a different way.

I don't think the situation is exactly the same, I don't even think that you're wrong to think the way you do about the situation, its your decision. but I do think people should calm down and take the time to think about other things to get some perspective before they make up their minds.

and when I said ' a lot' I was not talking about copying or similarities with mau, I was refering to the frequency with which people will shoot down things before they fully know whats going on, and that does happen a lot, I've seen it on several forums, in several hobbies and over several years, it really is just silly but it always seems to happen

    12. I took poor Xiyang Jin apart for this...

    13. I checked my Kaempfer... and about an inch from the botton of his torso... I did see depressions on the right and the bump on the left.

I also saw depressions and bumps and a lot of imperfections all around the stomach. I can't say for certain it looks exactly like the picture though. The bump on mine looks rounder and a bit flatter.

    14. Oww. I have a very loosely strung hound body here and I went to look - and his damn pop-belly bit my thumb!

Anyway, from a fast perusal - the inside has all kinds of dings and rough areas, btw - all I saw clearly in the torso section was a perfectly circular raised area on the left (his left) lower side. It looks like a blister might, or a big nail head, or something left from some kind of support stick or something.

However, if the above pics are supposed to be of the stomach area, I can't figure out which end is "up" - and if we're looking downward, how the two pictures could even look so similar, considering that Kyle has a one-piece torso/pelvis, and the chest plate has a different placement.

    15. This may sound silly because I do not know all about how they do the molds and whatnot but if Kyle is an "original" sculpt and not a copy, would not Dollmore have the original sculpt of him?

    16. Kyly's body has the same dollshe markings.

    17. Zalem, I did not make this comment, this was a quote from Hyon.

    18. Out of curiosity, I also took a peek at my CP Boy... he also have a lot of bumps and depressions inside his torso.

I also managed to briefly see (after a bit of effort) inside my SD16. He has some spongy, rough resin bits.

I took one hard look at my Dollshe boy (Husky purchased from Dollmore, end of January 2006). He does have the circular bump on his left side of the inner stomach... and a lot of depressions on the right side. I also saw a lot of bumps and depression on the front bit of the inside of the stomach.

    19. Well I'm working on a Hound doll right now for someone that's in pieces and got out the flashlight to look for these marks:

There are little holes going at an angle, but it's hard to really decipher if they match. But the "large bump" is definitely visible inside the hound torso. There's no mistaking that mark. So there ya go, I've just checked on a Hound doll that was recently ordered.

More of my thoughts on this are....

I can understand there being an inspiration to create a particular doll based on the marketing evidence (this case people buying Dollshe dolls), so Dollmore wants to compete and come up with their own doll. I don't have a problem with that. What I find wrong here is that they allegedly (from the photos) seem to have taken the Hound mold without permission and modified it. If they were going to do that, then they needed to pay Kim just like us customizers do out here. You don't take someone's work and change it a little and say you did it without any credit toward the original artist.

I'm sure Kim worked hours and hours on that sculpt. He probably tossed alot of clay in the trash during that whole creation til he got it right. When an artist really puts the time into something they're going to be passionate about it - it's their 'baby' so to speak. So when Dollmore comes along, literally takes what he spent time to perfect and get right, make a few little changes to it and call it theirs, that's wrong. And I don't blame Kim for pursuing it. They cut corners so they didn't have to do any work. Not only that, but the Dollshe sculpt is a standout. I'd never seen anatomy portrayed in resin like that before, particularly the hands. That's alot of work. It's a shame this sort of thing happens.

    20. I'm pretty sure I heard that original sculpts get ruined in the mold-making process... but I read that a while ago.

There's no question to me if this is a modded sculpt. The problem is what's gonna happen about it. What will happen if Dollmore admits this it a copy? Will they just stop selling the doll and get on with it?
