The Fear Factor - when did you lose it?

Aug 16, 2007

    1. I was scared of doing even the simplest of things, like changing the eyes, for about two days. Then I was scared of doing anything else for a couple of months - after I got past the barriere of doing a face-up myself, I've done pretty much anything.

The only thing I'm still apprehensive of is re-stringing, even if that's probably silly, heh.

    2. The first time I restrung my doll, I lost that factor.

    3. XD. It took me two days. My andrea is supposed to be a brunette, but he came as a blonde. I only wanted to redo his eyelashes and brows, but I ended up redoing his face about six times. It was so much fun. XD

    4. I never had it. My first doll came unassembled and faceupless so I had to work on her from day one.

    5. I still have the fear! lol So far I have sueded one part of my doll with help from my mum while she was still strung.
I'm sure I'll get over it one day but my dolls aren't even a year old yet.

    6. a couple months maybe less to do a restring, Marianne needed that
sueding bad, and boy am I glad I did it, she stands good now.

Faceup... well I've never wiped a default, it took me getting a used head
with an damaged faceup, but I am glad I did it, and did another after that
and now I finally purchased a new doll blank without fear.

Getting a used doll was the best thing I ever did to break my fear of damaging something so perfect as a new doll.

    7. to e honest a couple days ago i decided to change yuki's eye color from purple to pink i kinda regret it cause my demonic evil nails scratched the pain in one of the purple eyes :( but nonetheless it was a good experience

    8. My fear of restringing is starting to wane ever since I had to restring my MSD's arms; the anchor I was using to hold the loop slipped and the string shot back into his body, leaving one limp on the floor and the pieces of the other in my hand. I just remembered a tutorial I had seen on Youtube and managed to do it XD
I'm thinking about taking him apart completely to see if I can fix those kicky legs of his.

    9. the restringing took me a time to gather up the courage. it took me ages to figure out too. and a lot of strength too^^;
and the faceup well i wasnt scared of that but i did get frustrated. but i also felt like, you can always wipe it if you dont like it^^

    10. I just wanted to say that Goil hit it right on the head for me: my fears are holding me back. Doing face ups and various mods are really appealing to me, but I admit to a strong and debilitating fear on 'OMG RUINING!!!' my $700 doll. I want that special feeling of knowing she's exactly the way I want because I did it myself, and I just wanted to let Goil know she's given me a tremendous boost of confidence.

If I don't like it? I can send it back to the company or find someone talented locally to help. It's both as easy and as difficult as that, and that bit of advice really... I don't. Suddenly made it all 'okay' for me to think about trying myself. :cheer

    11. I'm still scared to mess with Lenore, who I've had for a year, but I ordered my new Wing blank so that I would have to do a face-up on him LOL. As soon as I can get some MSC, I'm gonna dive in and do his face and tattoos. After that, I'll hopefully have the courage to change some things on Lenore too. I'm still really nervous, but there's 13-year olds in this forum that seem to have no problem, so I should be able to pull it off.

    12. I haven't changed my doll's face up... But I paid money for that face up and I want to keep it until it wears out. xD However, I'm scared to re-string my doll. =/ I'm not sure how to start actually. ^_^;; Nathaniel seriously needs to be re-strung. I've only had him for a few months...but I've moved him around so much that I need to re-string him.

    13. I've only had my dolls for about a month and a half for the first one (a Limwha half-elf) and a few weeks for my second MNF Elf Shiwoo. I'm terrified of unstringing my Limwha girl Fianna, although I do plan on body blushing her (I have yet to figure out *how* I am supposed to do this if I can't work up the nerve to take her apart...), and I will suede her when I do this as well. On the other hand, I'm not half so frightened of taking apart my Shiwoo Zan. It could be in part the fact that Fianna came with a gorgeous face-up and I don't want to mar it in any way, and I'm going to be doing Zan's (whose head I've already taken off - and he is in desperate need of sueding). Or it could be the fact that Zan gives me the illusion of being "tougher" since he is Urethane resin as opposed to Fianna who is French resin. Who knows? Either way, I know I have to get over the fear someday! :)

    14. I'm starting to lose it now. When I first got into BJDs, I only wanted the perfect company faceups... but something has changed of late. I was going to send Kael off, but I had a go at his faceup, and it worked - I totally adore him. I love the fact that he's my little bit of art, even if it's just in his faceup. And it doesn't look to bad! X3

I restrung Hayden the day after I got him. Kicky little poop. I wasn't afraid, the forums had all the info I needed if I got lost.

    15. Anyone have any tips for restringing a doll?

    16. I've never had this fear, the first thing I did with my First MNF girl is take her apart and restring her. I knew it couldn't be that hard so I did it.
I did her first face-up before and after she got her body.
I started her cheek mods (sanding them off) and a friend finished them. (because she swore they were uneven, but I couldn't see it.)
I've done all the mods to all my dolls since, but some people think I'm a little off my rocker because I "just go for it.", but it's not really a big deal.

    17. I use two lengths of ribbon, start with the head or neck and work your way down to the feet. then do the arms through the torso and put the hands on.
Also there are threads on this some where on DoA.

    18. not so afraid of faceups because you can just erase and start all over.
but re-stringing terrorfies me. i've done it before with the help of a friend, but it freaks me out. i don't have my left and right straight.

    19. I had to become brave when poor Xavier's strings were so tight I couldn't latch his head cap. Bought in seperate pieces it wasn't his fault.

I did my research on restringing, asked for advice, then finally knew I had to bite the bullet and do it. My mini guy was very forgiving as I kept adjusting his tension but once everything was right and he was in one piece I could tell he felt better.

    20. XD well I made sure to conquer my fear on day one! As soon as my doll arrived and I got the chance, I did his face up and took him apart completely so I could draw on his tattoos better. I can't say I was every really afraid of doing stuff like that only because I read about 5 tutorials everyday before hand just to make sure I didn't mess up
