1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

The First/Best Advice You Ever Got

May 10, 2009

    1. Mine was 'you really should go researching about faceups before you buy one, silly thing'. I had my first doll (obitsu 60) and had no idea how to do the face. Oh well, turns out that maybe it was a good thing I didn't jump straight into trying to give him a faceup ^^;

    2. A good tip I got was to be careful of black clothing, it often stains the resin. I've noticed that none of the black clothing from Dollmore has stained my dolls, but if you buy home made clothing and dark jeans you have to be careful. Soak the clothes in vinegar for a while, and if they're not too delicate throw them in the washing machine!

    3. From my best friend in the whole world lD "If you ever need to send her over for safety, do it."

She's there now and got a new faceup, score! :D

    4. To ForeverYoung: Ah, next time your friend has change tell her that most banks now have the coin counters now and if you are a member of said bank you can cash in change without the fee. At least that's how it is with mine, and a few others I've heard of.

To Senko: Le gasp! I'd heard about sunlight being harmful to BJDs but not "oil", is that more like cosmetic oils or is the oils in human skin bad too?

To Quiet Queen: Oh my gosh, that's so sweet~!

To kyuukurochan: Hee hee. Gotta' love your friends, huh?

    5. <edit>My appologies for the very...delayed...double post. Blame dial up for failing to register the first one initially. *rolls eyes*</edit>

    6. I don't remember the first advice I ever got, I was so green back then lol Dolls were always quite personal so I used to do a lot of seeking on my own.
The BEST advice I ever read was, Never use sharpie's on resin. lol I'm 100% sure I wouldn't of anyway but I treat felt pens near my dolls the way a mother would guard her children from a rabid dog lol.

    7. The first was contrary to what some others have written: I was told (at Nan Desu Kon in Denver) that there were cheap dolls from China, and that they weren't horrible, and that it was "okay" to get one.

And I was also reminded that it's okay to spend money on myself. At the time, I wouldn't blink at spending a couple hundred dollars on new clothes for the kids or birthday gifts. Why was I so certain that I MUST spend my birthday money on something practical for the whole family? (So... I bought a doll instead of a couch. Yay!! I enjoy my girl MUCH more than I would have enjoyed that new couch. Really!)

    8. To Natsunekko: Ha ha ha. Yes I agree, dolls are way better than couches. A lot of things are better than couches actually. Funny, I only think of that when I'm away from said couch. Darn things suck you in--literally if you have an older one! *laughs* I've been eaten by a couch before...

    9. I was given and actually do give that advice to people.
One of the greatest pieces of advice I have ever received was to be willing to try new things with my dolls. Don't be afraid to bring them out and play with them. It did me a lot of good because I used to never ever take them out, but I have so much more fun now that Liette comes with me almost everywhere I go! :D

    10. The first advice was:"don't get the first BJd you've seen on web site or flickr, or whatever, but buy the first you really like most, bofore get as info as possible, so try to joint a BJd board, in your mother language, or INT if you're skilled with English language".

    11. Don't be turned off by price.

This goes for both the costly as well as inexpensive dolls. Just like people say don't go for the 'cheap' just because it's 'cheap,' don't go for the expensive just because it's expensive. Go for the one you like, no matter the price.

Not exactly advice I got, more advice I derived from various conversations with people.

    12. I think my first official advice was "go to a meet up in your area and see what you think".
Which made me love them even more, but also removed some of the cloudy-dreamyness around them, something I needed.

    13. "She's not THAT fragile!" ... after I got my first girl, and was a bit scared to really pull her about in order to unstring (she was strung SOOOOOOOOO tightly!) It really helped, actually! I began to lose the fear that I would completely ruin her XD

    14. Exactly what I was going to say! YOUR doll will haunt you. :fangirl:

    15. Like kateb, the best advice I ever got was reassurance that the dolls are fairly durable. :sweat A friend (the same one who got me into the hobby) taught me that it's okay to play with the dolls, because they're not as breakable as I'd first thought. :)

    16. The first advice I got was from a lady in a doll clothing shop in Hong Kong near 3 years ago 'don't give up on that doll, search high and low and you WILL find him!' (about me wanting a Volks Tony and couldn't get him due to being sold out)

the best advice I've got/read is also in ways the worst advice too: 'Never settle for a doll that's short of taking your breath away. Go for the ones that tugs on the heartstrings and just wouldn't let go.' i.e. never settle for 2nd best...

I've followed that with all my dolls xD some are a 'slow burn love' like my Shine, Breakaway etc. Others are love at first sight like Tony, Euclase, El-ss. To say the least... I haven't been disappointed very much so far but the costs are getting higher as my limits is moving higher o.o

    17. "Spoil them rotten!"

    18. E: The best tip I've gotten was where to buy string locally instead of online :XD:

I guess the best advice I have is:
Don't be afraid to take them out. Who cares who stares, honestly you'll attract people that are genuinely interested in your boy/girl. (I know I have ^^ I've met some really nice people that love my boy and are now thinking about getting a BJD)

    19. Cosmetic oil, oil in certain art supplies, and even the oil in human skin(that's why everyone says not to touch the face too often, but handling your doll on a regular basis with just your hands isn't going to ruin it. Just make sure to give the doll a nice wash every once in a while, or if you notice any dirtiness beforehand.)

    20. Ah, I've heard lots more tips and a few neat stories, this thread's really starting to get interesting. Thanks for all the posts thus far guys~!

To kateb and TheFontBandit: This is very reassuring. I was really starting to get worried about breaking a BJD by just looking at it wrong. Ha ha ha. Like my mother's porcelain/Madam Alexander dolls. I'm terrified of touching those. (Mostly because they are breakable, but also because they scare me. They all have the same face--it's so creepy! *hides*)

To everyone who has mentioned waiting for the perfect doll: Wonderful advice still. Especially about not worrying about if a doll is limited. I happen to have my eyes on one, and now I'll never give up on finding him--even if I don't get him as my first. Thanks a lot!
