The Hobby or A hobby?

Sep 17, 2012

    1. Definitely not the only thing I do! I'm interested in a very wide variety of things but I will say BJDs are my most expensive hobby. As far as spending money goes, though, I also buy a lot of videogames, clothes and makeup...I love fashion and design and own an Xbox360, ps3, ps2, Wii and DS! Additionally, I devote much of my time to drawing, watching my favorite shows and listening to music or reading books. I love my dolls dearly but they are nowhere close to being one of the only things I am passionate about(:

    2. I think I would have to say doll collecting and all connected to it is THE hobby I have. Writing is very important to me, but I view that as a passion, a dream, and a goal, rather than as a hobby. Reading ties into the writing quest. And I do enjoy (trying) to sculpt, but that goes back to the dolls again. So yes . . . it would be THE hobby with me. :)

    3. Right now it's definitely the hobby for me. I still keep up everything else I like to do in my free time; still read and write as much as ever, still enjoy supporting the bands and artists I like, and am still interested in fashion, but BJDs are where most of my luxury funds end up.
I can connect them with my other hobbies and interests though, especially the writing and fashion part, as I love to write down anything related to the characters behind my dolls and recently got back into making my own clothes for them; a bunch of it inspired by fashion houses I like.

    4. Dolls are not my main Hobby. My interest is to time consumed by videogames.
Every now and then I try to pick up the hobby of dolls but something is missing.
Each time I come back to it something feels off- not fully there. Yet.

It has gotten me to push past into other hobby boundaries. Such as sewing and photography.
I'm highly keen on the idea of making dioramas for them one day in the future as well. (hopefully I will get into the building hobby. I love the idea of building... I just haven't gotten around to that yet)

I suppose I played a bit with stopmotion because of my dolls too. Although that would sort of fall under photography eh?

Sculpting and drawing were already things I did now and then before dolls. *shrug*

    5. Before bjd's, I was a seamstress and tailor, an avid reader, video gamer, and handicrafter. I admired doll designers but had little interest in creating dolls. Since I discovered bjd's, I have found a smaller scale creative outlet, which allows me to play with techniques and materials that could be prohibitive financially or physically. In the back of my mind, I am subconsciously keeping a tally of my Dolly fund which is liberally transfused by what I earn with my other talents.

    6. I'm into a few different hobbies. I use the techniques that I learn from one hobby on another. Like I'm also into warhammer 40k, and do a lot of painting my own miniatures. I took what I learned from removing BJD faceups to help me figure out what may or may not be okay to strip a mini made from x material, and vice versa.

As for what hobby is the main one? Depends on how money is and what's coming out at the time. Then I may find myself focusing more on one hobby than the others.

    7. Definitely The Hobby for me. Like others, I sewed, photographed, painted, etc. before dolls, but those skills all revolve around the dolls now. I would get lazy and not do anything creative for months before, but the dolls and especially meetups motivate me to work on things all the time now. I also always liked miniature things, so one of my favorite pasttimes is finding in scale objects wherever I go. I learned to knit and crochet not for myself, but to make things for my dolls. Even anime and manga are somewhat related, because I love cosplay but never wanted to dress up myself, so now my dolls do it for me. I think the only completely unrelated things I do are watch tv and read non-manga novels. So yeah, all hobbies focus around the dollies :sweat

    8. It is one of a few hobbies I have. I also collect some other dolls & Hello Kitty. My boyfriend and I also collect Legos and video games and go to cons. Hoping to get into cosplaying too.

I've not been around the BJD hobby for long, but so far most people I have found are nice (I have heard some otherwise, but hope to not find those!) I love how creative this hobby seems to be and how people customize even the same sculpts to be so different from each other.

    9. Just a hobby for me. Money wise, the big one is vintage clothes and shoes. Time wise, the big hobby is fandom and writing. I'm into fashion dolls, and 12th scale too. I like having lots to do. :)

    10. This is one of many cherished hobbies.
I have an ever growing list of things I do. I find it a fun challenge to incorporate my other hobbies into the doll hobby. Like making jewelry and clothes for my boys, and making in scale art things for them.

Though, I have to say many hobbies I do are time consuming, and at least my boys can be played with often and taken out to go places. Most of my other hobbies are costuming, painting, drawing, building things, cooking, and so on and so forth. So I can't really drag art pieces about...and though I could go out in full costume...it's a bit odd.

Unless it's a gathering of sorts, but I've been out of the whole gathering/meetup take photos wearing cool things, thing, for a while. It's more fun to dress up the boys and make things for them.

    11. I have a lot of hobbies but because BJDs are so expensive, many of them have had to take a back seat. I haven't really been able to buy other dolls or new video games like I used to.

    12. There are many things I'm interested in and I get bored easily. I have several jobs, not because I wouldn't be able to generate enough income with just one, but because I like the variety.

Collecting dolls is just one of many hobbies that I have, although it is my favorite. There are so many of my other hobbies integrated in this one: I like to write, I like to sculpt, I like miniature worlds and - most of all - I like pretty things :).

    13. I have three main hobbies: BJDs, Monster High Dolls, and roleplaying.

My wife and I share in the BJD hobby. Even though we have dolls that are our own—I have six and she has fourteen—we still work together on it. But there are different things we enjoy.

My wife enjoys the maintenance of the dolls. There is nothing more she loves than sitting down for an afternoon re-stringing, sueding, doing faceups, etc. To her, it is very relaxing and gives her mind something to focus on. She keeps organized lists of who needs new faceups, to be re-strung, etc. and in what order of importance. I am very grateful for her.

As for me? I enjoy the beauty in the dolls. I love taking photographs and I am actually working on saving up for a Nikon D90 camera so I can take better and more professional photos. As it were, at my university, I am working on building temporary environments for the dolls as part of a sculptural, drawing, and photographic project. It’s most crafty and fun, but I like getting involved with the dolls in that sense.

BJDs are a huge part of our lives and we are already up to twenty dolls—and I don’t think we’ll be stopping there :)

    14. Since I'm just getting involved into the hobby it's not my main one. I'm also very into betta fish care, tarot cards, writing, and drawing, and dabble in classic lolita fashion, comics. I've also picked up knitting recently. I also play flute and blog pretty things on tumblr, as well as feminism and race relation posts.

Bjd's aren't the only thing I collect though. I collect pinky street dolls and stationary.

I'm really torn with how expensive this hobby is because I want to spoil the heck out of my fish Leonidus and instead of spending the 100 dollars on this doll body I spent the 50 bucks on a large tank for him. Aqua-scaping is also a huge hobby I'd love to get into.

    15. Dolls are A Hobby, though they're a hobby that incorporates just about all of my other hobbies and are at the very least compatible with the rest. I like to sew, crafts in general, miniatures are a huge hobby of mine, photography, and writing/story drafting. All of which work wonderfully with dolls. :)

    16. It's one of many, albeit a very special one. I also cosplay, attend concerts/Broadway performances, travel and eat a lot, so my money goes a lot of places. :))

    17. It's the hobby that launches a thousand hobbies!

I've gotten in to wig making, furniture making, sewing, photography, and jewelry making. I've gotten back into miniature making, furniture refinishing, and tentatively embroidery. Embroidery is hard for me because it hurts my wrists. :/ I used to do really elaborate embroidered jackets in High School, and I think that just killed my wrists.

    18. Bjds are just a hobby, I'm also a writer, artist, book collector, toy maker, crafter and an obsessive gamer. I'm super creative and get bored easily so my multitude of hobbies allows me to keep myself occupied. At this point I can't even tell which of my hobbies is the most expensive; video gaming, dolls or all the rest.

    19. Oh if only BJDs were my only hobby. xD I'm into a lot of things but purses and kimono not only rival the cost of this hobby, they're more. I'm attempting to drop the purse hobby and I think I'm doing pretty well! The only hobby that doesn't cost me this much is my art history studies. xD (But those museum catalogues also cost an arm and a leg.)

    20. It's only one of my many hobbies. ^^
